KNITTERS OF THE WORLD UNTIE! Actually I'm a closet crocheter. It keeps me off the ciggies and idle handies busy. I recall being at a concert at Edinburgh's Queens Hall and this old dear knitted throughout! It was Capercaillie and I'm sure the speed of her needles went in time to the music, fantastic !

violetdisregard · 02/09/2007 18:37

Forgot to say, maybe we could combo with the relationships threads, just imagine saying that we'll show you how to 'cast off a willy'. Over to you GreebosWhiskers!
[I'm away to thrash myself with a rolled up pattern booklet for being too saucy]

Meridian · 03/09/2007 16:49

on occasion i knit in coffee shops while waiting for dh to bring back my latte

and at the airport waiting for my flight, with very small plastic circular needles, freeking security,

fillyjonk · 03/09/2007 18:45

I do love this thread

Have KIPed a lot of late, as it happens.

But WHY is it always only me?

OP posts:
warthog · 03/09/2007 18:47

i did it for the first time while waiting for an opthalmologist appointment. probably doesn't count because the average age was 75 and they were all looking at me approvingly.

fillyjonk · 03/09/2007 18:49

pmsl at opthamologist appt

did you drop any stitches?

I need to start knitting baby garments soon (any links to patterns appreciated) and I am DREADING it. There is something about pg woman knitting baby stuff that is a bit bleurgh. Am thinking of knitting a willy instead.

OP posts:
DaisyMOO · 03/09/2007 18:50

You're dreading knitting baby stuff?! I'll do it for you I've only started knitting in the past few months so I never had the chance to knit baby things for my babies - I could almost be tempted to have another baby just so I could knit for it!

fillyjonk · 03/09/2007 18:53

I don't mind it so much as the "oooh adorable, pg woman knitting for a baby"

But actually, I could knit a cardigan and say it was this, say or this

its not like your average person would KNOW

but with my luck I will get Brenda the Uber Knitter...

warthog · 03/09/2007 19:59

ahahahahaha love the guts!

how about this baby jacket? it's a bit retro, but doesn't look like anything on earth until you sew it up. you could try changing the stitch if you don't like garter stitch.

oh, and congratulations

Tortington · 03/09/2007 20:02

i think it rather depends what you are wearing at the time.

what you are wearing will determine what oter people thing of you - becuase it does

so if you wore a trendy monsoon number avec bolero and a red beret - you would be proposing to the world that knitting is a fashionable past time

howver

should you wear a jumper ( you knitted) with cord skirt and @comfortable' shoes

then no

webchick · 04/09/2007 21:59

I used to knit on train to work - I tried to grab a seat with most potential elbow room though which wasnt easy on SW Trains. Those people who commented were interested and seemed impressed even although I am just a plain/purl/cable kinda gal.

My DD starts ballet classes next week so might try another project which is easy to follow/transport without maming anyone.

BTW what kind of bag do you all carry your needles/wool in? My hand bags arent that big so I used a 2nd bag which wasnt so convenient.

rantinghousewife · 04/09/2007 22:02

I have several but I use a large crochet bag to carry them around in. Tbh, I don't see the point of buying a knitting bag when you can make one.

warthog · 05/09/2007 07:24

what's special about a knitting / crochet bag?

rantinghousewife · 05/09/2007 10:11

Nothing special warthog but, it does make me chuckle when you see those little articles in the knitting magazines that say say xxxx company does this fab knitting bag especially designed for your stash, available from xxx, priced at £179!! Can't understand why you'd splash your cash on something you could make and which you probably would if you're crafty.

littlemisssensible · 05/09/2007 12:36

I have seen some rather nice leather ones which look like spacious handbags which I've been very tempted to purchase I havn't succumbed yet though!

GreebosWhiskers · 05/09/2007 12:46

I just use dd's bookstart bag - it's nice & sturdy & I can fit everything in without worrying about needles poking out the top.

ragdollyanna · 05/09/2007 15:34

Our local wool shop uses brown paper carrier bags with handles that are really sturdy so I just use them to carry my stuff in.

And I get a new one every time I go in to buy more wool!

Ragdoll

violetdisregard · 05/09/2007 17:34

yeah I use the bookstart bag or anything made of cloth. I have a pile of squashy fabric bags with various projects. Anything with long handles is good because I can tie them in a knot = catproof. Gave up on plastic bags, all ended up looking like sputniks. Or should that be sputknits? Jaggy and dangerous!

warthog · 05/09/2007 18:54

violet

ahhh i've seen them advertised, and some site even sold nappy bags as knitting bags. i thought there might be special pouches for scissors and sewing up needles, and a nice needle pouch. plus a cappucino holder and a slot for your pain au chocolat would go down very well. wishful thinking eh?

rantinghousewife · 05/09/2007 19:51

Liking the idea for a cappuccino and pain au chocolat holder!

Littlefish · 06/09/2007 19:16

I made myself a felted knitting back which is great because the knitting needles don't poke through it. It has a long handle and a short handle which thread through each other to close it.

Littlefish · 06/09/2007 19:17

knitting bag of course!
