know what you mean pruners. But if you're doing a bit of cabling, or trying to correct a dropped stitch a few rows down, you soon forget about what's going on around you and get absorbed. And when you finally look up, triumphant at having caught that stitch, you notice everyone else on the tube was absorbed in what you were doing, too!

TellusMater · 28/08/2007 20:13

I don't, but only because I am a novice and wuld be afraid of being judged for looking at my needles...

I have sewn in public though...

ragdollyanna · 28/08/2007 20:55

I am quite happy to knit in public. I used to knit at dd1's ballet class - 1 hour every Saturday morning. She has now finished ballet and is taking up gymnastics so I have 1.5 hours to knit every Saturday .

I am also very excited that dd1 and dd2 have been split up for swimming lessons so instead of having half an hour on a Friday I know have an hour to knit. I sit with someone who crochets whilst her child swims and I am very envious of her as I would love to be able to crochet.

I have even decided to join a knitting group as the woman that runs it says she will teach me to crochet.

KIP AND PROUD.

Ragdollyanna - why at joining a knitting group? I went to my first group last week & it was great

Gingermonkey · 28/08/2007 22:28

does anyone know if a sewer could go to a knitting group and sew instead? I feel very at not having my own group to go to and drink cups of coffee and chat, am thinking I may hijack some knitting group instead!!!

rantinghousewife · 28/08/2007 22:29

Can't see why you couldn't GM, it's still a craft innit?

Gingermonkey · 29/08/2007 08:46

well, that's my theory. I think I'll go and find one, get myself some peace every now and again!!!

thechickenlady · 29/08/2007 09:40

Where do you find a knitting group then?

And is it acceptable to go to knitting groups to pick other knitters' brains?

I want to learn how to cable and do lace knitting - have tried using books but it's all a bit complex for me.

MaryAnnSingleton · 29/08/2007 09:42

I'd be too embarrassed as I'm not very good and someone would be bound to tell me I'm doing it all wrong

Gingermonkey · 29/08/2007 11:07

yes, how do you find one?

rantinghousewife · 29/08/2007 11:23

Second the cast off site, you put in your location and it shows you groups in your area.

thechickenlady · 29/08/2007 12:53

Thanks! Just been to the cast off website but can't see the bit where you put in your location, can you help?

rantinghousewife · 29/08/2007 18:50

Sorry wrong site, should've said stitch n bitch here got myself a wee bit confused there, sorry.

ragdollyanna · 29/08/2007 18:54

I think the thought of joining a knitting group makes me feel old. I am expecting it to be full of old ladies with purple rinses although I am sure it won't be.

This particular knitting group was easy to find. We have a great little wool shop in my town and the owner holds the knitting group in the shop every Tuesday night.

I am looking forward to picking people's brains. The owner to show me how to crochet and apparantely there is a woman that goes who sews up beautifully - so well that you cant see the join. I am hoping she will show me her secret.

I am hoping to go to my first group next Tuesday.

rantinghousewife I'm all booked up and hopefully will be stitching and bitching this Sunday.

Thanks for the link.

rantinghousewife · 29/08/2007 19:23

You're welcome CL, must confess tho', have never been to one!!

DaisyMOO · 29/08/2007 20:11

I've been knitting a lot in public recently - so far in hospital, the early morning London commuter train, the tube, a doula training weekend (got me extra brownie points too, apparently knitting is a very good thing for doulas to do , a cross channel ferry, in the park, committee meetings and after my Grandma's funeral. Never had anything but very positive comments and/or asked what I'm knitting.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 29/08/2007 20:17

LMAO @ thread title!

Is it acceptable?

So long as you are not knitting a big woolly willy or the like then I would think, Yes!

GreebosWhiskers · 30/08/2007 09:50

Umm - I just finished knitting a big woolly willy

It was for my mum to give to my auntie at her 60th birthday party last week & apparently one of my auntie's friends now wants me to knit her a bigger one!

Didn't knit it in public tho'

Gingermonkey · 30/08/2007 18:06

think you kind of killed the thread then greebos I would love to see your willy (now that I've typed it it sounds horribly rude!)
