i always thought it was beacause the scots were as they are not really very good at footie.

i think it's a real, as i'd cheer scotland on, if roles were reversed.

I am an english woman living in south wales. the welsh generally hate the english (in my experience). Its rife round here, and you wouldnt get away with it if it was about another race or country. They hate the fact we may have english flags etc, or that england are in the world cup. Its crazy, as I cant think of a single english person who feels anti welsh! In fact, if wales were playing, all the english people I know would support them.

We are near the border - so it makes me laugh that while they hate the english with a vengence they dont mind popping over to cribbs causeway in Bristol to do a bit of shopping.

Stems back from old times - england invading wales etc. Bloody great big chip though, time it ceased and we all stood together as Great Britain.

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 19:34

Oh yes you're right posie. I had no idea until I moved to Wales, and genuinely lovely people would become real monsters spouting all sorts of vitriol whenever the England rugby team was mentioned. This was what I found so surprising - the violent twats were just violent twats, and they'll always exist everywhere in a minority.

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 19:34

jealous of poon hounds like john terry.that is funny

posieparker · 11/06/2010 19:34

I live in Bristol and have found Northerners hate us....hate is all around or should that be love??

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 19:37

I didn't know about that, what's so offensive about Bristol I wonder?!

Well being an English Londoner is just about as unpopular as it gets I think! How sad.

CarrieDaBabi · 11/06/2010 19:38

what on earth is a poon hound?

dh is as someone put it this week, a half and half

half english, half italian.

so he will support england 1
sub team italy 2
also best friends of ours are portugese so thats sub team 3

Macdog · 11/06/2010 19:39

Personally, I am fed up to the back teeth with the press and television attitude that England are superior to everyone else in whatever the tournament of the moment.

I don't give a rat's ass about the bloody World Cup, and would rather not have to hear about the feckin' thing AT ALL!
I am annoyed by sweeping generalisations that ALL Scots are against England and 'hate' the English.

It is that sort of attitude that leads Scots to say 'Feck you!' and support 'Anyone but England'.

I don't care where people come from, it's their attitudeand behaviour that usually makes my mind up. I can be royally pissed off by both Scots and English people alike.

I am also irritated beyond belief when people (ie supporters/media) think that the Union Jack is the English flag - no it isn't. Mind you where I live it is a symbol of religious hatred.

Oh yes, and the anthem "God Save the Queen" is supposed to be the anthem for GREAT BRITAIN , so why the HELL are England allowed to use it for English only games.

RRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 19:40

poon hound a dirty shagger like what john terry is

and yes scottish national team is pants, but hey tartan army love em

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 19:44

We don't have our own national anthem in England Macdog, or government, or currency for that matter. Perhaps we should.

The press/TV coverage is about supporting the England squad and having faith that they have the ability to do well in the tournament. Not superiority, but belief that as a nation we might just be good at something. It's a P.M.A. if you like... yes it's over the top but it's a World Cup, it's a celebration, it's supposed to be fun. When the media is usually full of war, murder and politics it's a refreshing bit of cheer.

CarrieDaBabi · 11/06/2010 19:44

lol, i like that, poon hound.

posieparker · 11/06/2010 19:47

Macdog.....but it's one of our national fucking teams, we're hardly going to report on the French are we?

England doesn't have it's own anthem, unlike other nations, because we've never been oppressed by the English!! We don't need an identity separate from Britain, we don't feel the same hostility.

posieparker · 11/06/2010 19:48

We don't even have our own parliament or assembly, our politicians cannot vote on some matters concerning other nations, but other nations get to decide about English stuff..

HappyTangerine · 11/06/2010 19:55

I'm Welsh living in England, married to a Scouser. We met at school in Wales and he had a tough time at school, lots of name calling and several beatings for being English. I've been in England for years and have often had anti Welsh remarks, it's worse now (Lancs/Merseysidee border) than it was when I was down South. Mainly elderly people talking about the state of the economy and how "they" (the Welsh) need to get jobs, start charging for prescriptions again and stop bleeding the benefits system dry. I've had enough and am desperate to go home, dh doesn't want our son to suffer in the same way he did so we're stuck here.

Football-I'll probably support England, no real strong feelings about it but I can't get hyped up about it, I don't feel any real passion only that I'm bored of all the media leadup already. Wheras rugby is a whole different thing altogether!

The Liverpool/Everton analogy interests me-I'm a diehard Liverpool supporter living on Merseyside. When Liverpool have been knocked out of the football and Everton have made it through,(e.g 2009 FA Cup final), I and many, many other people here have supported Everton, genuinely wanting them to win.

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 19:56

The concept of a United Kingdom is very problematic post-devolution.

And then there's the Barnett formula... perhaps if England wasn't bankrolling Scotland we could just forget all this nonsense.

This is about so much more than football.

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 19:57

poon hound.john terry he'd shag hole in ozone layer a fine example of poon hound. bet all the players are glad the wags aren't accompanying them.so john terry cant slip the haund when no one looking

Macdog · 11/06/2010 19:57

The point I was TRYING to make is that Scotland is a part of the United Kingdom, as is England.

When the United Kingdom or Great Britain are represented the National Anthem is 'God Save the Queen'.
It grates, as a Scot, when this is also used when England also use this as their own National Anthem.
If their is to be less racial hatred between the countries, England having their unique anthem would be welcomed.

This is , however, only my own opinion

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 20:00

That makes sense Macdog.

posieparker · 11/06/2010 20:00

There's not much racial hatred going North actually. I've never met an English person who hated the Scots. I've met a few who talk about the WElsh in a piss taking fashion, but then I live in Bristol and the rivalry is quite witty and friendly.

Macdog · 11/06/2010 20:02

Interesting aticle here discussing this.

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 20:03

Yes I agree Posie. I had no idea there was animosity from the Scots and Welsh towards the English until I moved to Wales for 4 years, I think because I'd never come across English hatred towards the Scots and Welsh. Yes of course there will be the odd ignorant twit, but nothing en-masse. It's a one way thing.

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 20:05

sporting rivaries are petty and based on derision of other team. this is just a wee one finger to england team and droning sychophantic commentary.like all rivalries it is ill tempered and irascible

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 20:08

I wish it was just that scottishmummy, but it runs a lot deeper for some from what we've seen on this thread and some of the commentary in Scottish press/comments following online articles etc.

This is historical, political, social division at play. No easy answer to that.

Macdog · 11/06/2010 20:15

To quote posieparker :

"England doesn't have it's own anthem, unlike other nations, because we've never been oppressed by the English!! We don't need an identity separate from Britain, we don't feel the same hostility."

England and Scotland are separate countries, but they are also constituents of the United Kingdom.

Sadly a lot of anger and resentment is caused because of the blurring of the line between England and the United Kingdom.

England having a unique anthem for their sporting events, and the use of God Save the Queen for UK/GB events would , I tink, be a Good Thing
