Well Im a scot living in England at the moment, and truthfully Yes I will support England and i hope they do well, but i am sick of hearing about 1966, yes they won and fair plany to them but that was over 40 yrs ago, times have moved on and so have players and supporters, can the UK, just get on and watch the football in harmony. No wonder there is so much anger in the world if people cant even get on over a game of football.....

Good Luck England, and Good luck to the rest that are playing also.

Tortington · 11/06/2010 20:21

i was very naive. i went on holiday to frace and the world cup was onl we were on one of the keycampesq type camps and the scots wanted france to win over england.( some years ago this was). and previously i had wanted any member of the brotish isles to win - bit since this date - when i witnessed thte total vitriol against england i think fuck it

makeupmummy · 11/06/2010 20:22

i am supporting them as DH is English, so DS half English - feel is right thing to do! Just to keep DS options open for whne he top international star (he's two,so may be counting chickens.....)

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 20:22

I will never support England to win any sporting victory.

It's bizarre to expect me to - I'm not English!

kitty17 · 11/06/2010 20:23

WHAT CAN I SAY CUSTARDO, not all scots are like that.....

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 20:28

There were some 'England footie team' themed Mars bars advertised on TV the other night. I laughed and said to DP, they'd never dare to flog them up here. The next day I saw them in Waitrose.

Dixons on Princes Street currently has posters up offering discounts every time England scores.

Do these idiots not actually get it?

This is S C O T L A N D.

How would the English feel if they were sold themed merchandise supporting another country by people who can't actually tell that they aren't that country. They think it's all the same, well it isn't. And it's tiresome being called chippy for pointing it out. London isn't Bristol, Yorkshire isn't Essex, and Scotland isn't England.

posieparker · 11/06/2010 20:28

Well if Scotland/Wales or NI had made it to the world cup I would support them.

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 20:37

Would you mind Posie if the sports commentators on the BBC said 'us' when broadcasting in England and referring to Scotland?

We put up with it all the time.

Then, when Scotland do produce the odd sporting success they suddenly remember the name of our country as a whole and call them British.

It might sound petty, picky and childish but it really isn't when you live year in year out with supposedly national broadcasters who think that the whole of Britain is known as England.

kitty17 · 11/06/2010 20:40

MorrisZapp totally agaree with you. When its them its england, when its us, we are British....... nightmare

RedBlueRed · 11/06/2010 20:42

I don't know if I will watch the football but I'm Scottish and I hope England do well.
I would feel a bit silly being anti-England considering my mother is English (not that she gives a toss about football either) and I live in England now.

I think there is a lot of rivalry in football in general...I lived in stoke on trent when stoke city fans stormed and vandalised Burslem, I think Port Vale were facing relegation or somthing and the Stoke fans wanted to rub their noses in it. Then there is Rangers V Celtic, although I realise that has a lot to do with religious divide. And the Man Utd/Man City rivalry.
I'm sure there are loads more examples. It seems to get very competitive and unpleasant which is why I prefer rugby - a far more civilised game .

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 20:42

I'd expect to see Scottish merchandise in the shops if Scotland got through to an international sporting event. After all, the butchers are full of haggis pre-Burns Night, and the flower stalls awash with daffs on St David's Day.

I don't get the sports commentator thing - so when talking about the England football team they say England, and when talking about Scottish sports teams/stars they say British? Is that right? They should say Scottish really, is that what you're saying?

lovechoc · 11/06/2010 20:46

morriszapp you have hit the nail on the head there. that's something that has annoyed me for YEARS! As soon as Scotland win any event, we are British, but if it's England/GB that's won then it's England.

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 20:47

Look, we all live in Europe. So it is OK with you if for the next 3 weeks we fill your shops with 'Support France' merchandise, and refer to France as 'us' for the duration?

I'm sure you wouldn't be as chippy as to complain. After all, the French like your countryside and think that your men have cute accents so I can't see why you aren't willing just to be called France by corporations paid for by your taxes.

It would seem very childish to object.

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 20:52

When talking about the English football team they say 'us'. When broadcasting across the UK.

Ie, the old England/UK is one and the same thing chestnut.

Unless discussing a Scottish success, in which case they say British. Because to say Scottish would be to miss out on the glory for themselves.

Look, I have highly educated, sensitive English friends who say 'us' meaning England and who use England/English to mean Britain/British. I understand that down there, it's not a big deal to do so and indeed might even look picky to mention it.

But when you hear it from the mouths of highly paid professional broadcasters it grates.

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 20:55

The European Union is an economic and political administration.

The United Kingdom is a country, a sovereign state governed as one single unit.

It's a bit different!

I think the English/British cross-over is driven by the fact we feel both English and British and there isn't much defining the two.

NanKid · 11/06/2010 20:59

Look, it's not rocket, is it? The Scots are bitter because they absolutely shite at football. They have two good teams, neither of whom would hack the English premiership. They just aren't very good. That's fact.

At least the Irish are good humoured about being hopeless failures

posieparker · 11/06/2010 20:59

MZ...actually not at all, there are Scottish pundits too.

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 21:05

Fair point crazycat.

Substitute Wales where I have said France above.

My point is, it really isn't ok to be told you are a country that you aren't.

I am not English.

I wouldn't expect the English to cheerfully accept being referred to as Welsh or Scottish routinely but that is what Scots (and Welsh and Irish people) get all the time.

Even abroad, if you say you're Scottish in say, the USA you will often get a very charming and friendly American person saying 'wow I love Scotland, I love your castles and your Queen and Manchester' etc etc.

Which would be like me saying to an American 'Oh I just love your mounted police and your maple leaf motif'.

I don't take offence as they mean so well, but my country is not England and if you lived with it all the time you wouldn't think it picky to be a bit meh about it - trust me, you honestly wouldn't.

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 21:06

nan,try reading the thread before gassing off about scottish footy.as i said aye we are crap - play like hammer toed jessies.but will always love scotland team

we arent glory chasers.largely because nae glory to chase.

so do ease up on talkin keech

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 21:08

oh yes, when I lived in Wales, I was asked by an American friend whereabouts in London what was .

There's a lot of confusion internationally about what the UK is, what England, Scotland, Wales, NI are in relation to each other. We don't help ourselves really!

NanKid · 11/06/2010 21:12

Ooh, the good old Scottish sense of humour, scottishmummy. Good to see it is in full effect

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 21:13

Yup, but crazy, it all goes one way. Nobody thinks that London is in Wales. Nobody thinks that the Queen is called 'The Queen of Scotland'.

Everybody makes the mistake the other way round, ie thinking that England contains Scotland etc.

So English people do not really have to put up with anybody not knowing the name of their country. And Scots etc never ever refer to Britain as Scotland. If they say Scotland they mean Scotland, not Britain in a 'oh it's all the same isn't it' way.

scottishmummy · 11/06/2010 21:13

oh the good ole english pomposity.utilised for max effect

MorrisZapp · 11/06/2010 21:14

Oh I love you SM xxx

mozette · 11/06/2010 21:15

I think it just comes across as condescending all the kind English people saying 'I would support Scotland/Wales/NI'

I don't get the 'home nations' shite, and why people in England would support Scotland if they qualified

Can anyone explain why you feel the need to support the Home Nations?
