IMHO - if you do follow football (or indeed in most areas of life), you should respect others' choices and their right to make them and learn to live and let live. If we all did this the world - and even GULP Great Britain, would be a nicer place.

bigfishlittlefishcardboardbox · 11/06/2010 10:11

I blame Gordon Brown!

xstitch · 11/06/2010 10:12

Simon I have reread my posts and at no point have I suggested that such disgusting behaviour is acceptable. I have every right to be offended at being called a cave-dwelling arsehole who is incapable of speaking English properly based solely on the actions of an idiotic minority.

As I said earlier in the thread I only mentioned my experiences of bigoted insults to illustrate the fact that I have not used it as a an excuse to label all English people as being either bigots or idiots. I have had the sense to know that an idiot is and idiot and has nothing to do with their country of origin.

I am truly sorry about the treatment you have had in your local town. I really hope you have reported the incidents you mentioned to the police. I also hope you take your complaints higher up if their response is not satisfactory. You would get a lot more support on here if you didn't feel the need to blame us for those idiots.

I for one have never used drugs, never vandalised another person's property and I have certainly never spat in the street let alone at a child. I know I am not the only person of Scottish origin who can say this.

We are a divided house- my dh is Scottish, I am English and my DS was born in the USA!!!! I suspect I will be cheering England and dh will support USA, using my son's nationality as his excuse!!

I really DO NOT get why he is anti England- he lives here and married me and his Mum was born in Liverpool!

Might need earplugs and a Relate counsellor for Saturday's game!!

scanty · 11/06/2010 12:45

kansasmum - it's a genetic thing! Hope war doesn't break out in your house during the match - least it'll be exciting!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 11/06/2010 12:45

Riven, we blame the Tories for everything in this house - even when they're not in goverment .

lore, football is tribal and part of the fun of it is taking the piss out of each other's teams - dh is a Liverpool supporter while I support Arsenal. We're always taking the piss out of each other about it - and if one of our teams is playing then we support the opposition.

It is harmless fun.

scanty · 11/06/2010 12:49

I'm wondering now if the Rangers fans will be more likely to support England - will have to ask my few Rangers friends. Maybe coming from the Celtic side, there is an extra bias.

RunawayWife · 11/06/2010 12:55

YANBU but the Scots only love the English when the "British" taxes are funding the Scottish education and Health systems.

I shall be sending my English son to live with his Scottish cousin so he can get a free uni place

I hope England do well, and I do get fed up with people bashing the English.

Saltire · 11/06/2010 13:17

Interesting article on the BBC website - although unlike OP it mentions wales and NI as well
here it is

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 13:49

By contrast, have a look at this piece of bilge from The Herald!

DH is from Glasgow and will have to watch England because ds is watching England. I have just hung an England flag out of the front bedroom window to welcome him home this evening PMSL.

From what I can gather from the Scots I have met they are in competition with the English on the following apart from sporting events:

  1. Weather
  2. Water
  3. Friendliness
  4. Clean Air
  5. Free ranging children

I often tell DH I liked the Scots till I married him and met his family. His mother will ring and give a weather report and ask about our weather before she asks about her grandchildren. I can see it's peeing down from the weather reports and she swears the sun's melting the tarmac .

I have a feeling that no matter how many posts appear on this thread - at last count it's 341 - not one person's mind will be changed about what they think of the English/Scots.

A lovely, circular thread. All those words, yet no-one will be budged on their original stance. Blah blah blah.

McSnail · 11/06/2010 14:39

I'm off to block this thread.

McSnail · 11/06/2010 14:39

If I can figure out how to...

glasgowmandy · 11/06/2010 14:43

mcsnail i started this thread, kinda wish i hadnt and gave up on it, wasnt meant to start all this.
gave up reading on it, i can delete it if you want? x

OP posts:
McSnail · 11/06/2010 14:45

Don't be silly, sweetheart.

Crazycatlady · 11/06/2010 14:45

I think it would be a shame to delete it. People's feelings about these issues are real and if they can't be aired here where can they be?

Obviously no need for deliberately inflammatory comments, but most of the posts on here haven't been that way.
