AIBU Books Game Part Seven

Hi all, here we are again ...

As always, everyone welcome to pile in with AIBU book synopses, as long as you bring ice cream or something equally tempting for when we're stuck.

To continue mine - I'm in charge but it's terribly difficult to keep control. I don't know how long I can keep their respect. I didn't ask to be in charge ...

Someone gave me the book recently so it would have been a lot smarter to AIBU it before it was on the box again!

I didn't see it the other night but I do remember the original adaptation. I think my mother thought I was too young to pay any attention to it so I was allowed to play quietly in the background.

So she got a shock when she was filling in her sister on a missed episode and I piped up helpfully: "And that's when the affair began!"

My copy's heading for Oxfam so I'm glad it won't hurt your family's feelings, CJ.Grin

MCP on the fatal picnic!

...He's not ill but I would have expected to hear from him by now so I can't help wondering...

Pogleswood · 11/09/2010 16:51

Now I'm getting cheese,CJ......

So how is it that you've both watched it,and I missed out, when I'm pretty certain I was old enough to have been watching legitimately the first time round??
Though I can quite see the AP's mightn't have been too keen.

MoominMymbleandMy · 11/09/2010 18:12

Cheese!

Now all I can think of is Wallace and Grommit!

Perhaps it's that you were more responsibly parented than wot me an' CJ woz, Pogle. Or they thought you were getting to an age when it might give you ideas.Grin

...I'm worried about his mother, you see. I suspect she's too harsh with him...

llandb · 12/09/2010 09:29

'Morning, all!

Just swimming by with scuba gear for rafters...

Pogleswood · 12/09/2010 11:43

Morning! Hello, llandb - have some treacle tart...

Ideas?? You could be right,Moomin! I did manage to develop the odd idea anyway - reading is a wonderful thing...

Actually I can just see my Dad leaping up to switch off the telly saying "We don't want to watch this",as he famously did in the middle of a brilliant BBC classic at one point Grin - cue major protests from DSis and I resulting in him actually switching it back on and going away - an unprecedented occurance!

I've failed to find the relevant book,so CJ ,I am going to commit and say I think you are Thursday Next - but I don't know in which book,I couldn't be more specific about what is happening,or if you are BU at all!All I have is a vague impression of a meadow, cheese and something falling out of the sky! Smile

CJCregg · 12/09/2010 20:34

Evening, al!

Llandb, how nice to see you back. Have you brought us an outboard motor?

I'm not Thursday Next, Pogle - I wondered where you were going with the cheese! Thanks to this thread, though, I actually know who Thursday Next is. I've read them all now, and so has my mum!

So there I was, with my delightful partner Clarissa, having a quiet picnic in the Chilterns ... who knew what was about to happen, and how it would impact on all our lives? That boy and his grandfather could have died ...

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 12/09/2010 21:44

Ah, dodgy things hot air balloons! Rafts are much safer

So what was the classic your Dad objected to, Pogle? Mine always had a pressing need to go and put the kettle on when there were rude goings-on on the box.Grin

...He was a different boy after staying with me, poor little lad. I wish she hadn't called him home...

Pogleswood · 12/09/2010 22:50

Gah!
Oh well,I might have guessed that vague visions of cheese weren't enough to base an answer on!

No rude goings on,Moomin - it was War and Peace! We weren't quite sure why he felt so strongly about it...
There's nothing like watching something that might give you ideas with your entire family including grandparent to put you off any ideas you might have had, though(IYSWIM!)

So,has your little boy returned to the city, his mother, and his baby sister? If so,YANB at all U to worry, and I don't want to think about any of it...

CJCregg · 12/09/2010 22:58

War and Peace, Pogle?! Your dad must have been very strict.

I still cringe at the memory of watching The Singing Detective with my mum and stepfather. Oh, the heaviness of the silence, you could almost touch it, and oh, the hollow laughter when at last a joke came along and we could pretend it wasn't all about shagging.

Well done, Moomin! You have my enduring love ... Grin

MCP.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/09/2010 23:11

Oh noooo why does this always happen? I lose the thread (the actual thread, not the mental thread, although...) for a while, and when I come back and read through - I KNOW THEM ALL. YET THEY HAVE ALL BEEN SOLVED! Eep!

CJ - Enduring Love!
Moomin - Bouquet (sp?) of Barbed Wire! Goodnight Mister Tom!

:o

Yes Moomin Betty MacDonald is v funny (at least Anyboyd Can Do Anything Is. Read the Egg & I at an early age and was too young to get it I think) Do you like Monica Dickens?

I've half-forgotten what my last one was, and wasn't enjoying it anyway so will start again I think.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/09/2010 23:15

AIBU to think that a long-distance relationship is just not going to work?

Pogleswood · 12/09/2010 23:48

Never mind,Elephants! Such is life..

I have never even heard of Enduring Love!
(this isn't more from the same stable as Her Surgeon Lover,is it?? Grin)

I now feel guilty for misrepresenting my not-really-strict-at-all Dad!
The bizarre thing about the War and Peace episode was that it actually provoked him to switch it off, whereas we watched lots of other stuff without him turning a hair!
He did have The Power over the TV though,so normally he'd have changed channels and we'd have gone away...

MCP!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/09/2010 00:03

Afraid not Pogle, it's more from the stable of dodgy geezer Ian McEwen.

...strictly speaking it's not long distance, I can see his house from here, I just can't get there...

Pogleswood · 13/09/2010 00:05

AIBU to talk to him ?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/09/2010 00:44

Doesn't sound unreasonable to me, Pogle. Has someone told you that you shouldn't? Is he an enemy alien?

Pogleswood · 13/09/2010 19:16

No,not at all - it's just that I don't normally talk to people - or at least not in the way I talk to him...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/09/2010 21:20

are you cold-blooded and a bit hissy, Pogle? (no offence :))

CJCregg · 13/09/2010 22:46

Cor, Elephants, you are clever.

Making up for lost time Grin. It's so frustrating coming onto the thread to find loads that you could have done - happens to me all the time. Saying 'I knew that' doesn't really cut it!

Yours is ringing bells but I need MCP ...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 13/09/2010 23:04

Well,really!

Actually,no. I'm....well,not cold blooded.Or warm blooded either,come to that..
..If he didn't have me to talk to heaven knows what he'd get up to - even with my influence he manages to find trouble...

CJCregg · 13/09/2010 23:18

Ooh, Pogle! Are you a wise old parrot?

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/09/2010 23:30

Ooh oooh Pogle did you Create wise old parrots, along with the land, sea etc? If so, firstly thanks and secondly YANBU, he needs all the help he can get to keep on the straight and narrow.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/09/2010 23:34

Thanks CJ :o

Rushed that post out in case I was right and someone had got there first!

...it's not like it's my fault we got separated - I was swapped after all which is hardly dignified for a girl...

Pogleswood · 13/09/2010 23:46

A parrot! First I'm a viper,then I'm a parrot

I did indeed create parrots etc (though not while in the form I'm in now)and in reply to your first comment, you're very welcome Smile
He does need me to keep him on the straight and narrow - and to stop him inflicting GBH on the communists...

Hmmm, yours is ringing bells with me too - MCP!

CJCregg · 13/09/2010 23:49

What was that, then, Pogle?! I thought you might be Polynesia from Dr Doolitle, but I was clearly wrong Confused.

MCP and goodnight!

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/09/2010 23:59

I really love the Don Camillo books, they could almost tempt me to religion :)

...and he always was a bit of a drip anyway, all that dying of love stuff. Not like my new bloke...
