AIBU Books Game Part Seven

Hi all, here we are again ...

As always, everyone welcome to pile in with AIBU book synopses, as long as you bring ice cream or something equally tempting for when we're stuck.

To continue mine - I'm in charge but it's terribly difficult to keep control. I don't know how long I can keep their respect. I didn't ask to be in charge ...

Erm.... I'm not quite sure as I've completely forgotten what book I was doing!

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/08/2010 11:06

Grin at Treacle. No need to ask if you had a good weekend!

Are you one of five sisters with an eccentric Papa and irritating Mama, perhaps?

Good luck with the speed reading, Pogle!

...So they came round two weeks after she died and said the statue should go to their families. But I refused because the boys thought it was a statue of my wife and it comforted them to have it...

steamedtreaclesponge · 16/08/2010 14:39

Aha! I remembered!

...Well, I suppose it is a bit of an eccentric crush. She's not my usual type. But we just moved here and I'm finding it a bit hard to adjust...

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/08/2010 15:22

Oh well, still stumped here. MCP!

...But they thought that Tip and Teddy shouldn't have the statue because we had adopted them...

llandb · 16/08/2010 15:25

Dang, Treacle - so much for my intended 'are UFOs and a fake Welsh accent involved' question.

llandb · 16/08/2010 15:54
steamedtreaclesponge · 16/08/2010 16:29

hello all!

...in fact, my whole family are finding it hard. We're used to a somewhat larger residence...

Moomin, are they leaving no card unturned in their efforts?

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/08/2010 18:16

Are you downsizing royalty, Treacle?

llandb, I have loads to catch up on too. I'm only back to CJ's gipsy lover so far. Eek!

...They asked their uncle to intercede but Father Sullivan told them they had no business suggesting the boys should give up the statue...

Pogleswood · 16/08/2010 19:56

Evening all!

I've googled yours,Moomin - and I think you are def NBU,but the whole plot sounds terribly complicated!
Yet another author I've seen recommended but never read Blush

So has your family fallen upon hard times,Treacle?

Pogleswood · 16/08/2010 20:08

Oh,and for anyone who cares Grin I have tracked dowm my quote - I was wandering off to bed last night with a chocolate hobnob and a cup of tea when I had a revelation....Jilly Cooper!
So I'm not sure if it appears elsewhere, but I definitely read it in her poetry anthology The British in Love, which has The Lady of Shalott in...(and also comments from Jilly C)

steamedtreaclesponge · 16/08/2010 21:02

Ah, I have that anthology!

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/08/2010 21:22

Woohoo! Proof that wild guesses do come off sometimes Grin.

Pogle, Treacle, I haven't read that much Ann Patchett but what I have I've enjoyed a lot so I think she's definitely worth a look.

Glad you've tracked down the quote but I'm mystified as to where I saw it because I don't think I've read that anthology and I know I haven't read any Jilly Cooper. Should I? The covers have always been a bit off-putting and I had the impression they were all show-jumping and shagging, possibly at the same time.

AIBU to think my friend should be making a lot more effort to preserve her baby's ethnic heritage?

Pogleswood · 16/08/2010 22:17

I like Jilly Cooper - but mostly her nonfiction writing.I think I've read Riders, but that's about it - apart from all the girls' name novels I was addicted to for a while in my youth Blush Blush (Octavia,Emily,Harriet,Bella..)
Well,at least they are funny..and well written

Your friend's baby's ethnic heritage sounds v.familiar,
MCP!

Evening all. I am eating a pear and thinking of T.Keith. No one else in the world apart from you WRLs would get that. Love this thread.

No idea what anyone is talking about, as usual. I am an unabashed Jilly Cooper fan. She is and has always been so funny - I loved the Common Years and her Sunday Times columns, and just devoured the novels. Still go back to them sometimes as comfort reads. I had a boyfriend at university who was very snooty about my Jilly pash, but eventually he succumbed and I used to read her early novels aloud to him on long car journeys! (Shit, I've never told anyone that.)

Riders is lots of show-jumping and shagging, Moomin, but in a good way, I assure you. The more recent ones have been disappointing but Riders, Rivals (my favourite), Polo and the Man Who Made Husbands Jealous are funny, romantic and full of characters you find yourself - sometimes deeply against your will - forming lasting attachments to.

Now, back to my AIBU, which is nothing to do with Jilly Cooper (but will store up some ideas, now that she's crept onto the thread - btw I love the idea of 'CJ's gypsy lover' Grin) - so I'm leading this expedition, but no one seems to know exactly what our mission is and I think it might all go horribly wrong.

steamedtreaclesponge · 17/08/2010 09:49

Rivals is my favourite too! I love the O'Hara family. Have read it an embarrassing number of times, my copy is totally falling to pieces. I actually found one of her books in a very posh bar the other day (was on a shelf with a load of other rubbishy books in the loos) and nicked it... Blush

Actually, I must confess that I am a practised book thief - if I find good books being used as decorations in pubs I feel myself bound to liberate them! I do usually try and replace them with something else from my tottering piles though.

Moomin, if you had read any Jilly Cooper I would think you were Taggie Campbell-Black's social worker, but since you can't be her I'll have to say MCP...

CJ, are you looking for the north pole?

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/08/2010 10:40

Morning, all! So long as the pear wasn't from your auntie's garden, CJ.

Hooray for Treacle the Liberator, and what a good reason to visit a pub.

The three of you haven't quite convinced me about JC but I promise I will open the next one I run across rather than sniffing at the cover and scuttling past it.

Stll MCP on your one, CJ! Unless there's an elf in your expedition. Wink

...She's changed her baby's name, dressed her in Western clothes and given her a Western haircut. Whereas we are doing our best to preserve our baby's cultural heritage...

steamedtreaclesponge · 17/08/2010 12:04

Hmm... is the baby Chinese, Moomin?

MCP everyone else!

AIBU to not believe in it?

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/08/2010 13:03

Definititely depends on the 'it' in question, Treacle. MCP!

...Her baby and my baby were adopted from Korea. That's how we met. The babies were on the same flight to the US...

MoominMymbleandMy · 17/08/2010 13:05

Definitely Blush

steamedtreaclesponge · 17/08/2010 14:38

...I just don't think it'll help. What we really need is more soldiers...

MCP!

llandb · 17/08/2010 20:46

No idea what you lot are on about, share Moomin's impression of JC :o

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 17/08/2010 22:02

Me neither, llandb, I am totally in the dark, although would love it if CJ's was the North Pole as treacle suggested.

AIBU to really wish she wasn't so intrepid?

steamedtreaclesponge · 17/08/2010 22:09

Ooh rendang? Tofy & sweet potato sounds amazing...

Who she, Elephants? Your wife? Mother? Lady friend?

MCP!

...this siege doesn't look as if it'll lift any time soon, and the weather's been dreadful...

steamedtreaclesponge · 17/08/2010 22:10

Tofy?

tofu

Aaargh, typos must be catching! Wink
