AIBU Books Game Part Seven

Hi all, here we are again ...

As always, everyone welcome to pile in with AIBU book synopses, as long as you bring ice cream or something equally tempting for when we're stuck.

To continue mine - I'm in charge but it's terribly difficult to keep control. I don't know how long I can keep their respect. I didn't ask to be in charge ...

I won't let that woman steal DH's inheritance. The old lady shouldn't have left her the house in the first place - luckily we got away with it that time, but now she's muscling in again, with that awful sister of hers!

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 11/08/2010 15:21

CJ! Hello!

No idea on yours, I'm afraid...

MoominMymbleandMy · 11/08/2010 15:47

No ideas on your one either, CJ, but it does sound fun.

And I have been plodding back through this thread for list-compiling purposes and am irredeemably stuck on 15:10 of July 7, the smouldering Other Man of Romany blood, which means nothing to me but quite clearly does to you. Help!

Oh, and Miss N Marlow was rather keen on me (in fictional persona) too.

...And it was a shock to find the Captain and the First and Second Lieutenants were all dead - leaving me in command...

CJCregg · 11/08/2010 17:47

Blush that was me and treacle, Miss, being naughty at the back of the class and having a Jilly Cooper moment. It was gorgeous Gyppo Jake from Riders.

The only other N Marlow hero I can think of is Lord Peter Wimsey but I don't think he was a seafaring type!

That sister of hers turned up at the wedding. Oh, the embarrassment. With a very odd couple in tow - a young man and his 'wife', who claimed to know DH's father. The whole thing was a shambles.

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 11/08/2010 19:42

Ah, thanks CJ. I'm afraid horsey books are closed books to me. Bit like you and elves.Grin And, I fear, just like your current AIBU. MCP!

Not Lord Peter, no, Miss N Marlow never ran risks for him!

...And there's four feet of water in the well, the guns are dismounted, and half the crew are dead and wounded. It wasn't what I'd pictured when I'd envisaged commanding HMS Sibella...

steamedtreaclesponge · 11/08/2010 22:12

Aha - a spot of judicious googling leads me to the conclusion that you are Lord Ramage, Moomin!

Have never heard of those books... any good?

Mmm, Jake Lovell. Now there's a man that could put a bottle of gin and a horse to good use (admittedly, probably not at the same time)

CJCregg · 11/08/2010 22:17

Damn, I was almost there - thinking along Mask of Apollo lines, but knew it couldn't be that! Forgot all about Ramage. Wouldn't you love to know what else was on Miss Cromwell's list? Sort of feel unqualified as a well-read lunatic unless I've read her recommendations.

Jake Lovell. Mmmmm.

OP posts:
llandb · 11/08/2010 22:56

There, there, CJ - at least the unmarried sister hasn't moved into the house with her child by the young man (yet)- and serves her right for being an umbrella-thief....

(Still paddling though - and 'night, all!)

MoominMymbleandMy · 12/08/2010 12:09

Ah, that umbrella-thief! Now, if you'd only mentioned the famous umbrella, CJ, I'd have known what you were talking about.

And have a weevilly biscuit, Treacle. I was indeed Ramage. It isn't a bad series for Royal Navy historical background but the hero is handsome, intelligent, courageous, resourceful and rich. Whatever scrape he gets into he always comes up smelling of roses. Like Batman sans Robin.

I turn to them usually when I've re-read all Patrick O'Brian and I'm pining for some more. Only it's a bit like reading Elinor Brent-Dyer after Antonia Forest.

I expect Patrick O'Brian would would have been on the Kingscote restricted list too, btw, CJ, (I will persuade one of you to read Aubrey and Maturin, I will!)

AIBU to keep the statue?

steamedtreaclesponge · 12/08/2010 13:12

What was yours, CJ?

Sounds like you might be a bit U, Moomin - does someone want it back?

And AIBU to lie about my daughter?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/08/2010 17:26

Does it belong in a temple, Moomin?

Treacle, are you lying to get her out of trouble, or are you perhaps exaggerating her craft abilities?

steamedtreaclesponge · 13/08/2010 10:52

Elephants, I am certainly exaggerating her abilities... it's all in a good cause though!

MCP!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/08/2010 11:23

Would you be emphasising her very special spinning technique, treacle? If so I think she might be annoyed with you very shortly!

steamedtreaclesponge · 13/08/2010 12:25

But she's marrying a prince! I'm sure he won't actually ask her to spin all that wool in a day...

Sending a small, angry goblin creature your way as a prize Grin

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/08/2010 13:03

oh...thanks, he's stamping holes all over my floor!

MoominMymbleandMy · 13/08/2010 14:42

Afternoon, all! Poor Elephants! Can you swap him for a house elf?

...It's a statue of the Virgin Mary that's been passed down through my wife's family. Only my wife died...

Pogleswood · 15/08/2010 15:06

Hello everyone!

CJCregg · 15/08/2010 17:47

Hi Pogle! Oh goody, you're back Grin

I have never read a Chalet School book in my life. Not sure if that's something to be proud of or not! But I can't know the quote from there, so maybe it also appears somewhere else?

(I've had DD's birthday, that's my excuse)

(PS Moomin, I got DD a fab dolls' house for her birthday - first thing we did was put a monkey on the roof Grin)

OK - AIBU to worry about leading this expedition?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 15/08/2010 17:54

PS sorry, llandb, forgot to say well done on getting Howards End (which is such a standby of mine, I can't believe you don't all just scream 'Howards End' every time I open my virtual mouth). Can't remember her name but I was being the ghastly daughter-in-law.

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 15/08/2010 18:04

Yep,I'm back, how nice to be appreciated for oneself, and not for any other reason!! Grin

Ok,not Chalet School then..(neutral on the pride stakes I'd say - not a patch on AF though)
So is it really not from AF,which is what I'd originally thought? Botheration!

I have never read Howards End,or seen the film - so perhaps if you could keep AIBUing it I won't need to....

AIBU to be wary of visiting Sussex?

CJCregg · 15/08/2010 18:35

Pogle, as if it wasn't the sight of your lovely cheery face, nothing more Grin - hope you had a good holiday!

Am having much fun googling 'Lady of Shalott nice lie down' ... and extremely Blush to realise I've been spelling her like the small onion, poor woman. Oops. No further though, sorry - it is really frustrating. Can't help thinking it's Patrick but I'm sure I'm confusing that with the Ginty comparisons. Argggh.

OP posts:
CJCregg · 15/08/2010 18:37

Hmmm - have just come back from Sussex, which to be honest was mediocre. Who could you be visiting, I wonder? Relatives? Friends? Rich ones? Poor ones? Clues please!

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 15/08/2010 19:47

Evening, all!

Glad to have you back too, Pogle. Hope you had a good time. I haven't identified the Lady of Shalott quote either but I was thinking it sounded rather like the Provincial Lady perhaps?

If you're off to sponge on your peculiar relations in Sussex, then you are most definitely not U.

MCP, CJ! Happy Birthday to DD Smile. I'd say a monkey on the roof was essential for all dolls' houses. I very nearly bought one a few years ago just because it looked so like the monkey. Only I hadn't noticed it was a Steiff or the price tag...which explains why I felt I could live without a monkey a bit longer.

...It always went to the daughter who looked most like the statue. Only we didn't have a daughter so her sisters said they should have it...

steamedtreaclesponge · 15/08/2010 22:01

Hello, everyone!

Are you off to Howling, Pogle?

And AIBU to fancy my neighbour?

Pogleswood · 15/08/2010 22:53

Yes,indeed - Howling and peculiar relations it is! well, when all's said and done Sussex is not quite like other counties...

(which is why we went to Dorset instead on our hols, and very nice it was too!)

I can see I'm going to have to speed read through all of AF,the Provincial Lady, and possibly Elinor M Brent Dyer too - I will track down this wretched quote

Is your neighbour eminently fanciable,Treacle? or are you being a little eccentric in your choice of crush?

MCP!
