AIBU Books Game Part Seven

Hi all, here we are again ...

As always, everyone welcome to pile in with AIBU book synopses, as long as you bring ice cream or something equally tempting for when we're stuck.

To continue mine - I'm in charge but it's terribly difficult to keep control. I don't know how long I can keep their respect. I didn't ask to be in charge ...

OP posts:

Cross-posted!

Might it be a very big hat then? One that your recently widowed employer discarded?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 10/08/2010 00:19

Mm, Moomin, a bell is being rung (with the aid of trusty wikipedia)...might the fact that nearly every post mentions that your Cargo is of Rice be significant?

MoominMymbleandMy · 10/08/2010 10:29

It might be Elephants. Not that I'm going to Blow my Horn about it. But it certainly doesn't do much for my chances of being promoted from Midshipman.

AIBU to wish I hadn't just got my first command?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 10/08/2010 11:24

Is it asking you to do something you'd rather not?

Do I win some waterlogged rice, Moomin?

steamedtreaclesponge · 10/08/2010 11:32

...It's even got a feather in it. But she seems to prefer her old straw one...

So what was yours, Moomin?

I haven't actually been there, but my dad goes fairly often, and my sister went up there when she was revising for her exams recently. I'd really like to go, might have to plan a trip to Wales when I get back...

MoominMymbleandMy · 10/08/2010 11:40

Yep, have a cargo of soggy rice, Elephants, and I'll throw in the driftwood from the Marie Galante so you can make a fire to cook it.

Treacle, mine was Mr Midshipman Hornblower by CS Forester. No idea on your one. MCP!

...I suppose it's what everyone dreams of - commanding a ship in battle...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 10/08/2010 12:00

ooh dear I'm afraid my shipping knowledge has just about run out!

thanks for the meal though...

That sounds familiar treacle, is there something special about the straw hat do you think?

steamedtreaclesponge · 10/08/2010 13:33

...I think she's just worried about what her grandfather would think of the new hat, she hasn't seen him in a while...

Moomin, did something go wrong in your battle? Did you lose?

llandb · 10/08/2010 13:55

Treacle! Pure mountain air and goat bells?

steamedtreaclesponge · 10/08/2010 15:06

Indeed, llandb! Time to get out of the raft for a bit methinks!

A herd of goats will be arriving for you in the post...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 10/08/2010 17:07

Why don't I read more books? I never seem to read/remember the real classics (except obvious ones like P&P, jane eyre etc), all the "grown up" books I read tend to be really dull and forgettable. I've started frequenting the young adults section at the library! Blush

Just an apology really for the fact that I can't think of any AIBUs, or at least only kids books.

llandb · 10/08/2010 17:22

How exciting - but, Treacle, my postie will never forgive me - he already grumbles about my eBay shopping :o

Think a solar rain-powered kindle might come in handy on the raft! Never seen one IRL - can you only read Amazon things on 'em, or other formats too, such as random PDF?

llandb · 10/08/2010 18:13

Elephants - how can one be a well-read lunatic without knowing kids; books? (Also, gives the rest of us a fighting chance if someone does those - though if it's Green Knowe then I'll keep paddling!)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 10/08/2010 21:15

Oh my goodness, you have been?

Thanks for lift offer! Is that the town with the little boys who are good at singing?

llandb · 11/08/2010 10:20
Poledra · 11/08/2010 10:31

Bloody hell, llandb, I live just up the road from you!!

steamedtreaclesponge · 11/08/2010 10:51

Ha! I was there only last week! (Not the caves, mind you - the Other Place)

Elephants, my ratio of reading is probably about 70:30 kids/adults. I, too, hang around the 'young adults' section at the library trying not to look shifty...

Soooo, AIBU to look so angelic?

MoominMymbleandMy · 11/08/2010 11:00

Morning, all!

Must re-read Heidi as I have no recollections of any hat and am now wondering why it didn't fall prey to the goats.

So you're moving too, llandb. What an itchy-footed lot we are. Good luck with the tottering piles and internet connection.

As the only one of us who has actually visited the real Green Knowe (many thanks for lovely offer, which you may live to regret Grin), 'wossit' like then?

...Well,when you have a 28-gun frigate up against a French ship of the line, there won't be much doubt about the outcome...

llandb · 11/08/2010 11:10

Blimey Pol! Wonder if we know each other IRL Shock - think you have 3 DDs though? Don't think I know anyone who has :)

Treacle, someone has to ask whether there is a picture....

Moomin', my best response to your nautical AIBU is to paddle the raft along and offer room and popcorn to survivors...

steamedtreaclesponge · 11/08/2010 11:35

...I look as if I'm too good for this world, but what I enjoy most of all is fighting...

llandb · 11/08/2010 11:52
steamedtreaclesponge · 11/08/2010 13:45
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/08/2010 14:04

Fighting anyone in particular, treacle?

MoominMymbleandMy · 11/08/2010 14:49

Oooh, Treacle, you're Montmorency! Leave the cats alone! Now!

...And although I'd always dreamed of commanding a frigate in action I hadn't planned on command being thrust upon me when I was woozy from a bang on the head...

They will love the popcorn, llandb. It might seem a bit strange but I'm sure it's going to be nicer than weevilly biscuit. Only I think they're going to want rum or blackstrap too.

steamedtreaclesponge · 11/08/2010 15:10

I am, Moomin! Honestly, it's a dog's life...
