I'm genuinly interested in why you object to homosexuality, and everytime I ask on the other thread it gets lost in the general hubbub.

So - name change if you want, but please tell me what your objections are?

If it's because it's not natural or against biology, please expand your answer to include why you care about that.

Show your working for extra credit.

n.b. Don't bother if it's a religous justification, you'll need to find someone who believes in that kind of stuff to debate with as I'll just dismiss that out of hand. If you are a homopohbic religous person with a secular objection then please go ahead.

Seriously wondering whether DP is my mum/dad. They come out with this sort of thing about both homosexuals and different races;

They get more benefits
They get better treated than a 'normal' family would
They come over here and get first dibs on housing
They get more rights at work
They can do what they like but they keep rubbing it in our faces (thanks nice mental image there parents)

Etc etc. I think it comes from reading the Daily Mail and stupid incorrect stories such as gay/single parent/'foreign' family given mercedes, luxury penthouse and £1m a week in benefits.

Drives me mad as its so stupid its difficult to argue against.

DP - You're not my parents are you?!

LetThereBeRock · 11/12/2009 13:51

Because it's nonsense?

pooexplosionsonthedustyroad · 11/12/2009 13:53

that doesn't make any sense, Quimby.

you can hold any opinion you want in your own head. no-one cares. But when you open your mouth and start talking about your views, other people are going to shout back at you. Thats free speech.
Are we insisting that the likes of DaftPunk has to agree with us? No. We are asserting that her views are based on nothing more than false information, stupidity and bigotry.
And she is the one trying to stop anyone else talking, or being, or living their lives properly without hiding.

noddyholder · 11/12/2009 13:56

All this is just giving these sick views and insults a platform in the guise of debate.the slurs are getting a bit near the mark now and I think its enough IGNORE HER!

it isn't nonsense...

y'know i read posts on here from people i know have qualifications as long as their arm.....but they talk shite, and i'm pretty sure they don't even believe what they say....they're just so scared of saying anything that isn't PC.....i'm glad i'm me and not them.

the way things are now...you're either a wooly liberal....or you're a nazi.

birdofthenorth · 11/12/2009 14:02

mayorquimby- I find your point interesting and I probably agree with you on the literal term liberalism.

However, imho, bigotted views ARE damaging even if unspoken as any kind of unjustified bias leads to (usually unconscious) discrimination at in education, in recruitment, in career development, in using goods and service. There's now near concencus that Nazism was appalling, and that those who silently agreed and went along with it were as culpable as those who spoke and acted on their facist views. I hope in 50 years time we look back on our 'people have a right to oppose gayness' stance with equal horror!

One of the reasons I am so passionate about this is that it remains INCREDIBLY hard to come out in many UK workplaces and in many UK cultures, particularly in disadvantaged socio economic backgrounds where anti-gay views tend to be more common. Why is there a stereotype of gay men being ragingly middle class? Because often if you come from a council estate you fear your dad kicking the shit out of you if you come out. The more subtle homophobia is challenged by self-righteous 'liberals' like us the easier that conversation gets for that kid -and the better his life chances become as a result.

So no, I won't live and let live with crazed bigots. I think having the confidence to challenge, which isn't always easy (when we're not on anonymous message boards) is one of our biggest responsibilities.

noddyholder...

why don't you just ignore me...

why do you follow me around...?

you're like one of those yappy dogs always at my ankles.... y'know, makes alot of noise but doesn't actually do anything

you're so boring.

LetThereBeRock · 11/12/2009 14:06

No you're right. It isn't nonsense. It's complete and utter bollocks.

And I,for one, really do believe in what I say,and I know I'm not alone in that. I've no reason to doubt the authenticity of the other members who have protested against the homophobia displayed here

I'm just as grateful that I'm not you, as you may be that you're not like me.

Then why add to it SWC?

LetThereBeRock · 11/12/2009 14:14

Well said Bird.

pooexplosionsonthedustyroad · 11/12/2009 14:14

tolerant my ass white cat, I'm intolerant of you for a start.
You've spectacularly missed the point if you think its about tolerance.

RE daftpunk; does anyone else want to claw their own eyes out in sheer frustration at the nonsensical ramblings she spews forth?

MillyR · 11/12/2009 14:15

I would agree that people were potentially holding opinions out of fear of breaking a liberal consensus if we were talking about the rights of indigenous people of the arctic, or some other group of people that most of us don't know personally.

But we are not; we are talking about gay people. For most people, that means we are talking about family members and friends that we care about deeply.

I find it utterly bizarre that people do not understand that this is about people we know, not some meaningless stance on tolerance.

LetThereBeRock · 11/12/2009 14:16

Follow you around? You really rate yourself in spite of what most people think of you.The more ridiculous the posts become though the more I agree with the wider consensus that you are a troll. But I suggest you take your own advice and see a doctor you need help

LetThereBeRock · 11/12/2009 14:16

But that's not exclusive to DP.

daftpunk · 11/12/2009 14:19

pooexplosions...

don't read my posts then...

i don't read yours.....i need to stay awake.

ooojimaflip · 11/12/2009 14:21

A 'Liberal Concenseus' that insists everyone agrees with it is not a Liberal viewpoint it's a fascist one. Let's not go down the American route of using Liberal to mean 'anyone espousing leftish views - from communism to stateownership of utilities whom I do not agree with'.

There isn't a Liberal or even a lefish concensus - the fracturing of the left is an ongoing issue.

What there IS - on Mumsnet and in RL - is a tendancy to ascribe views to people that they do not hold. So as soon as someone says something mildly (or extremely) homophonbic/racist whatever (as there is a Liberal majority on MN), they are assumed to hold all other views related to this - which they may not do. This sets up an antagonisitic situation, where prepeared arguments just get slung back and forth. In order to ACTUALLY change someone's mind you have to know what the actually beleive in the first place.

If you are polite, listen and use reason then you can actually have a debate.
