I'm genuinly interested in why you object to homosexuality, and everytime I ask on the other thread it gets lost in the general hubbub.

So - name change if you want, but please tell me what your objections are?

If it's because it's not natural or against biology, please expand your answer to include why you care about that.

Show your working for extra credit.

n.b. Don't bother if it's a religous justification, you'll need to find someone who believes in that kind of stuff to debate with as I'll just dismiss that out of hand. If you are a homopohbic religous person with a secular objection then please go ahead.

I'm actually intrigued by the term 'homophobia' - a phobia is a fear of something so are people really frightened of gay people - well some people sure . However I know lots of people (disclaimer: not me) who are of the opinion of 'I don't agree with it but I'd never persecute/abuse anyone else doing what they want'. These people don't object to civil partnerships or 'gay adoptions', would not dream of abusing people in the street etc BUT they still personally have an issue with homosexuality - now I would not describe them as homophobic yet...
Can anyone enlighten me?
ps just to say I'm a christian and really HATE it when people make assumptions that me and/or my church have certain views on homosexuality.

LadyVolupta · 10/12/2009 18:36

I dont object to homosexuality thank you!..

Virgin - they sound horrible. Somehow they would seem less interesting than an apparently reasonable looking and sounding homophobe. I suspect those people are generally anti-social and 'hate' everyone who deosn't behave exactly like them . Possibly that is true in some way of all homophobes.

TisTheSeasonToBeHully · 10/12/2009 18:42

I am a homophobe and proud.

Oh no I'm not, I forgot.

There surely are no homophobes on MN???

Not when we all bf on demand (and tandem, extendedly), recycle our poo and only use French resuable shopping bags woven from organic baby belly button fluff??

The men I know that are homophobe also seem convinced that if a man is gay then they will automatically fancy them which really is the height of arrogance.

I think the fear of being fancied is quite a common one.

I had a very lentil weaverish friend in 6th form who seemed exceptionally liberal. I was so shocked when another friend told us she was gay and my friend actually said "but what if she fancies one of us".

Firstly - nobody male or female fancied this girl anyway (sadly - you know what teenagers are like, very looks obsessed)

Secondly - you don't have to have sex with someone just cause they fancy you. For my money I would far rather be fancied by a hot 17 year old lesbian than a middle aged bloke.

TBMOM · 10/12/2009 19:31

Is it homophobia if you consider being gay to be essentially 'wrong', that wiring has gone awry somewhere in the brain whilst it was developing but not to have violent thoughts towards gay people, to have gay friends and to get along with gay people as you would a straight person? It's just that you don't think that it is a natural state.

These are the thoughts of some members of my family.

Hassled · 10/12/2009 19:35

Really interesting question. I think for many it's just a fear of the unknown - nothing more complicated than that.

TBMOM · 10/12/2009 19:42

OK , I'm playing devil's advocate here. These are not my personal beliefs.

I think homosexuality is an unatural state. You don't see lions/tigers/swans/sheep pairing off with members of the same sex.

Homosexuality is wrong because it says so in the bible.

Homosexuality is caused by the developing foetus's brain being exposed to certain hormones in the womb.

Homosexuality can be 'cured'.

Perhaps they are like buses. You wait for ages and then 3 will come along at once....

lol tell my female dog that, she is always trying to hump my other female dog

ItsIgginningToLookALotLikeXmas · 10/12/2009 19:51

I think a lot of the objection comes down to a fear/disgust or whatever of anal sex - it's one of the big taboos isn't it. Hence why homophobic people focus almost entirely on the idea of gay folk having sex, rather than anything about their relationship.

TBMOM · 10/12/2009 19:52

Being in captivity is an unatural state so for animals to become bi-sexual/homosexual whilst in captivity it is therfore completely unatural and a reaction to their circumstances. Doesn't that prove that point? Have you actually seen the above mentioned animals engaging in homosexual behaviour?

The term 'homosexual' for animals doesn't make any sense. Is there a word for animals being 'homosexual'. If there isn't then doesn't that also prove a point?

TBMOM · 10/12/2009 19:55

ah but ocdgirl again these dogs are in 'captivity' it is an unatural state for them as far as their primitive brains understand. Would you see 'wild' dogs of the same sex, who mix with many other wild dogs, mate with their fellow dogs of the same sex?

Maleeka · 10/12/2009 19:57

Well quite frankly i need more gay people in my life! I'm feeling very left out

ItsIgginningToLookALotLikeXmas · 10/12/2009 19:57

Er, no. Words are just the labels humans give to things we have decided are important enough to label/things we notice. I would think same sex orientation would cover it, the fact there isn't a word for gay dogs is hardly evidence that they don't exist.

OhChristmasTEEOhChristmasTEE · 10/12/2009 19:58

But there have been incidents of homosexual animals in the wild.
