MoominMymbleandMy · 07/05/2009 21:07

I can't get into the old thread so I think we filled it up! I hope everyone finds the new one.

So nice, shiny new thread, nice shiny new AIBU.

AIBU to be jealous of my DH's correspondence with a stranger?

Pogle, I feel I ought to know yours but I'm not getting anywhere.

Maria, this isn't ringing bells at all now. Doh!

I've just put a bid on one on ebay ...

Can't believe I never knew about the others. All my labours are now concentrated on acquiring them for DD (who's still only three, so a bit of time yet).

Now, back to business. I don't suppose you'd feel like telling me where you're on holiday? She's not called Daisy, is she?

pollywobbledoodle · 26/05/2009 22:47

i always feel better (but poorly read) if i've never heard of the books after you have named them

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/05/2009 23:11

Yes, me too Polly, I'm still smarting from not spotting Mog in the Dark!

Good luck CJ! And I do have a spare Five Dolls and the Duke if you want - American illustrations and spotted on the cover, but clean inside and a HB.

...My DD isn't called Daisy, I'm afraid. We're on holiday in Cornwall and she seems to like exploring rock pools and caves. She spends a long time away, anyway...

CJCregg · 26/05/2009 23:24

Is her father a painter, Moomin?

CJCregg · 26/05/2009 23:28

Oh, and thanks for the offer of Five Dolls ... will definitely take you up on that, you are so really kind. Perhaps we should discuss the details somewhere else, I don't want to lower the tone!!

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/05/2009 23:39

No, he's not a painter, CJ, he doesn't come into the story much, tbh.

I haven't got round to sorting out CAT but you can e-mail me on [email protected].

OP posts:
CJCregg · 26/05/2009 23:48

Damn, thought you might be shell-seekers ...

Another cluelet?

Will email you tomorrow, you are a total star

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/05/2009 23:56

No, there've been too many on this thread already! I'll be out for most of the day but I'm always here in the evenings!

...I'm worried she may have found an undesirable playmate. She keeps asking for extra food to take with her. But if she had made a nice friend surely she wouldn't be so secretive...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 27/05/2009 08:20

Oh,I remember Five Dolls in a House,in that way you do when it flags something up in distant memory ,but you've no recollection of the plot! But have now looked it up and I do remember...
Perhaps your daughter's friend is nice, but unusual in some way,Moomin...Haven't seen any smoke on the beach, have you?!
See you all later,I hope!

MoominMymbleandMy · 27/05/2009 10:43

Morning all!

Why yes, I have Pogle! But it was green!

Well done indeed, especially as I put this one on the last thread and no one got it, even when I mentioned mythical creatures and almond buns.

AIBU to throw a stone at the local VIP?

See you later!

OP posts:
CJCregg · 27/05/2009 11:35

Morning! Never heard of Green Smoke, but it looks lovely - another one to stock up for DD ...

I've been outbid on the Five Dolls in a House. Am hanging in there, though - still a few days left.

Throwing stones, Moomin? Have you done any damage? Will need a few more clues there, I'm afraid.

AIBU to wish that damned woman would stop singing?

pollywobbledoodle · 27/05/2009 15:16

moomin is her name becky?

Queenoftheharpies · 27/05/2009 15:28

I lost my copy of "5 dolls in a house" and then quite by accident came across a copy in odd circumstances: some kids next door to my brother's house were having a little yard sale for charity (think it was kosovan orphans) and it was on sale for 25p.

The LOs earnestly manning their stall (their half-naked barbie dolls and worn out jigsaws weren't exactly doing a roaring trade) and the fact that I'd found a much-loved book from my childhood kept me smiling for the rest of the day.

MoominMymbleandMy · 27/05/2009 19:00

Evening all!

My original Five Dolls in A House disappeared a long time ago, probably loved to death, so I was delighted to find a HB omnibus containing House and Monkey in a library sale...for 25p too! Sadly, the others cost a bit more than that.

CJ, yes, you need Green Smoke, and Dragon in Danger, and The Dragon's Quest, and Dragon in Harbour, though the last one isn't as good.

...They don't call boys Becky up North! They might down South, which is where I'm headed. The only damage I did with the stone is to make myself a marked man (well, boy) and I need to make myself scarce...

CJ, is the singer an operatic performer?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 27/05/2009 19:34

at copies of 5 Dolls for 25p. Think the other bidder is going to play games with me, and I'm not all that clued-up on ebay. Haven't emailed you yet, Moomin, so sorry - RL got in the way again!

I do love this thread. Have been wandering around MN poking my nose in on other ones and this really is a haven of book-love ... no bitching, no sniping, no oneupmanship, it's bloody wonderful. QueenoftheHarpies, I hope you're going to join in?

So, Moomin, you are of course right - she is an operatic lady, and her scales are most irritating.

Still need more clues on yours, though (pathetic). Anyone else got any new ones?

MoominMymbleandMy · 27/05/2009 19:56

Hi CJ, the trick with something you really want on Ebay is to put on your maximum bid in the last 30 seconds.

It doesn't always work but it is very annoying to leave your maximum bid well in advance, and then return to find you've been outbid by 99p by someone who's been pushing up the total by increments, until they're just ahead of you.

Perhaps we ought to be a bit viper-ish? Just to ensure we don't get expelled for letting the MN reputation down!
But, perhaps not, because as always, all book lovers are very, very, welcome to play - otherwise I might have to do some housework.

I might not have the right opera singer, though. If it's my one she's just unwittingly toppled the Queen of Riseholme.

Further clue...Things are looking up for me. I've got a job with a company of travelling players. But I have to act women's roles so I hope no one does start calling me Becky...

OP posts:
CJCregg · 27/05/2009 20:01

Moomin, you minx, are you a Marlow?!!

CJCregg · 27/05/2009 20:07

Oh, and I'm nothing to do with the fine ladies of Riseholme. Blasted opera singer taken over the house, with her endless scales and her dodgy-looking pianist. I'm sure he's up to something ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 27/05/2009 20:17

I thought I might have the wrong opera singer but I'm no wiser as to the right one. Another clue, please?

I'm not a Marlow but there is quite a similarity in plots, and this one precedes "The Player's Boy". I wonder if AF knew about it.

...Another boy's joined the company. He is amazing at playing women's roles. He can be a bit stuck up, but I like him most of the time...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 27/05/2009 20:17

I was just wondering if you were a Marlow,Moomin!(Great minds,CJ??!)
More clues on yours would be nice..

Pogleswood · 27/05/2009 20:28

Ok Moomin,I confess this is the result of googling and remembering which authors I read at school...are you Peter Brownrigg??

AIBU to take home a homeless girl I saw collapse in the street?

PS How on earth do you remember all of these books ,Moomin - I am totally impressed!

CJCregg · 27/05/2009 20:30

Great minds indeed, Pogle! Problem is, I don't think I know any other Player's Boy type stories ... will rack brains whilst eating pizza in front of The Apprentice (can you tell I'm home alone tonight? Will take laptop with me, natch)

That blasted woman and her singing really is doing my head in. I never invited her, she just turned up with her wretched entourage, including a blasted parrot, if you please ... An Englishman's home should be his castle, don't you agree?

Pogleswood · 27/05/2009 20:35

Oh help,I'm sure I know this - have to go and put DS to bed..(AIBU to prefer this thread to quality time with own child...)

MoominMymbleandMy · 27/05/2009 20:38

Oh very well done you, Pogle! There isn't any mystery to remembering Cue for Treason because it is the DD's latest Puffin Post free book and I just had to re-acquaint myself with it.

Is the homeless girl beautiful Pogle? Or at least does your DH think she is?

AIBU to wonder if my DS's new friends are leading him astray. We've never had complaints about him from the police before?

OP posts:
pollywobbledoodle · 27/05/2009 20:52

evening all
a last blast before i finish packing. on hols tommorrow..yay!

cj is everyone a hostage to her singing?

moomin is it all to do with what he saw in the cave?
