To think an apply turnover is not a bun?

Look, it's all regional and cultural and there are a million names for a bread roll and no-one has the right to judge and everything...

But someone said on another thread that a fairy cake with no icing is a bun (I mean, no, but let's go with it) and a currant bun is part of a different related category - the "sticky bun".

And also included in sticky buns are... doughnuts and... apple turnovers.

So, sure, it's all relative and whatever but... an apple turnover is not a bun, right?

Apple turnovers are a pastry surely? A fairy cake without icing is just a bare sponge. Sticky buns to me are things like cinammon rolls, nit to be confused with cinnamon whirls which are pastries 😂

Kingdomofsleep · 13/10/2026 18:44

Bun describes the shape and texture, so I agree that a fairy cake without icing is bun-like. An apple turnover is flatter so is not a bun, it's more like a pasty.

In my categorisation, a scone is like a bun.

But then, is breakfast cereal a soup?
Is a hotdog a sandwich?

Maybe rules are there to be broken

MyDucksAreHavingAParty · 13/10/2026 18:47

Its made from pastry, so how can it be anything other than a pastry item?

Cereal is not soup.

Not only is a hot dog not a sandwich, but neither is a hamburger.

Yes, a bun is defined by shape, but that shape isn't the shape of a fairy cake, which is the shape of a small cake, but that of a bun, like a burger bun. Which isn't, let's remember, a sandwich.

An apple turnover is a pastry not a bun.
A bun is a sticky bun if it is glazed rather than iced. A currant bun isn't a sticky bun if it isn't glazed.
A fairy cake doesn't need to be iced to be a bun. It's the size that makes it a bun not the icing. A cake that is large enough for several servings and is cut into slices is not a bun, but if it's small and only one serving it's a bun. A bread roll can also be a bun if you are at a barbecue or buying sausage in a bun at a street food stall and you definitely don't want that to be iced. If an uniced bun wasn't a bun then the phrase 'iced bun' would be a tautology.

lottiegarbanzo · 13/10/2026 18:50

It’s a pastry! Obviously.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 13/10/2026 18:51

A small cake is a bun, baked in a paper bun case. It can be decorated however you like.

Yetanotherone12 · 13/10/2026 18:52

I’ve had to google what an apple turnover is 🤣

kind of an Apple samosa shaped Cornish pasty 🤣

definitely not a bun. Those are cake or bread based. I would not have classed cake as a bun a few years ago but I fear I have spent too much time around northerners…

Woah there. A hamburger is not a bun! A hamburger is a patty IN a bun. And a burger bun, before you slice it in half, is remarkably similar in shape to a fairy cake without the icing. WALLAH!*

*(I do know how it's actually spelt)

Edit - actually i think we are agreeing about the burger bun

sittingonabeach · 13/10/2026 18:55

Doesn’t a bun involve dough and yeast, so bread like

A pastry, like apple turnover is different

NuffSaidSam · 13/10/2026 18:56

A bun needs to be bready imo. Like a currant bun. Or a hot cross bun. Or an iced bun.

An apple turnover is more closer allied to the pastry department. Although if I asked someone to 'get some pastries' and they came back with apple turnovers I'd think they were insane. I suppose it's a sweet pastry?

Either way, it's not a choice I'd ever make. Nothing against the apple turnover, there's just so many better options.

Agreed than an apple turnover is not a bun.

A hamburger is a sandwich, though.

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 13/10/2026 18:58

Fairy cakes are made in a bun tin. Bun tins make either bread or cakes into individual portions which are buns whether they are bready or cakey

brownbootsandhats · 13/10/2026 19:00

It’s a pastry surely

buns don’t have to be yeasty , they can be cake but they can’t be pastry

A hamburger is a sandwich, though.

A sandwich is two slices of bread with a filling. And it's cold.

No no no! A burger bun is not a bun at all, it's a barm cake, or a soft roll. A small cake without icing, with or without dried fruit or cherries has always been a bun, despite recently being enlarged and Americanised to an ffing muffin! An iced bun is the exception, being a finger roll of bread with either white or pink icing on it. Those are the Rules! (And an apple turnover is definitely not a bun!)

sittingonabeach · 13/10/2026 19:02

Surely there is a clue in the name fairy cake, it is a cake

The case you cook them in is a cake case not a bun case

LittleGreenDuck · 13/10/2026 19:03

How can a naked fairy cake be a bun? A bun is something bready, like a cinnamon bun or a hot cross bun. A cake without icing is still cake!

Chips without vinegar are still chips, they don’t turn into roast potatoes just because you remove the topping.

Madness, I tell you. Madness.

Isseywith2witchycats · 13/10/2026 19:03

Being as an apple turnover is puff pastry with an apple filling its no way a bun its a pastry

You can have a hot sandwich or a Dutch sandwich

Yes, exactly.

The phrase "a small cake is a bun" makes as much sense to me as saying "a small dog is a flowerpot."

So Subway don't sell sandwiches?

You could have a hot sandwich but you'd have to call it out for being hot. It has to be made from slices of bread, too, not a bun.

What's a Dutch sandwich? Sounds suspicious.
