To think an apply turnover is not a bun?

Look, it's all regional and cultural and there are a million names for a bread roll and no-one has the right to judge and everything...

But someone said on another thread that a fairy cake with no icing is a bun (I mean, no, but let's go with it) and a currant bun is part of a different related category - the "sticky bun".

And also included in sticky buns are... doughnuts and... apple turnovers.

So, sure, it's all relative and whatever but... an apple turnover is not a bun, right?

Buns are a yeasted dough. End of.

'What's 'apply'? Well, it's like goldy and bronzy, only it's made of apples' - Baldrick, probably.

I'm usually very good at spelling.

Surely there is a clue in the name fairy cake, it is a cake

The case you cook them in is a cake case not a bun case

This.
A bun is bread, sweet or savoury.
A cake is a cake, iced or not.
An apple turnover is a pastry alongside danishes, cinnamon whirls and the like as they are pastry based.

Madness!

You're doing real harm to the credibility of the Turnovers Aren't Buns movement.

No it’s a cake made out of cake. You don’t need the word bun because it is a cake

A fairy cake is a bun, with or without icing.

An apple turnover is a pastry, as is a cinnamon bun. But obviously Chelsea buns and bath buns are buns.

You could have a hot sandwich but you'd have to call it out for being hot. It has to be made from slices of bread, too, not a bun.

What's a Dutch sandwich? Sounds suspicious.

Otherwise known as open - ie one slice with more of a topping than a filling

turnovers are still not buns though

Snooks1971 · 13/10/2026 19:19

@RikthePoet I have heard on very good authority that sealions make buncakes out of fish.

Hayley1256 · 13/10/2026 19:20

So where I'm from a fairy cake and anything of that size whether iced or not would be a bun. We don't call any type of bread a bun it would be a bread cake or a roll. A cinnamon roll and a apple turnover would be a pastry

Why is it not called a fairy bun then? The name is cake (iced or not)

If cook a tray bake cake and cut that into individual pieces, are they buns?

In my world, cakes are cooked in cake tins but fairy cakes are cooked in bun cases in bun tins.

Mince pies are cooked in bun tins, as are jam tarts, and (often) Yorkshire puddings.

A bun tray doesn't only produce buns.
