Aibu to want to visit the transport museum?

This is a lighthearted thread btw.

I realised that we’ve got a local transport museum full of old busses as well as other vehicles. It’s only a few pounds entry. You can get a bus ride on one of the old buses around the local area too. They’ve got a good selection there.

I suggested to dh that we go go with our 10yo ds.

He said yes but I could tell he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic. I asked him are you actually interested in going or are you just saying yes. He said he’s not remotely interested but is happy to go if I want to.

That’s absolutely fine and I’d be happy to go alone, but am I a boring bastard?

Yabu - you’re boring no one cares about the transport museum
Yanbu - it’s interesting dh is the boring one

YANBU to want to go.

But I don't think it has any bearing on being boring, so I refuse to vote and judge either one of you in that way.

I love a transport museum. I’m not particularly interested in cars, motor vehicles p, buses etc…except in an ooh shiny kind of way. But they are usually fascinating sources of social history. Who was using charabancs etc…. That I am very nerdy about. It’ll do a good scone too.

Highly recommend the https://www.britishcommercialvehiclemuseum.com/. Had to be in Preston for a couple of days and filled a very wet morning very happily here!

Id go!

Iheartmysmart · 09/10/2026 07:33

There’s a great place near me that houses lots of old scientific objects as well as old cars and other forms of transport. I’ve visited it twice for a guided tour and am booked on another one soon. It’s amazing being able to look around all these things that had such an influence on the world. The guides are really knowledgeable as well.

You aren’t being unreasonable or boring by wanting to go but suggest leaving your DH at home if it’s not his thing.

Aviarythebird · 09/10/2026 07:34

I thought the main point of having children was to have an excuse to visit transport museums and ride on old buses and trams. I did lots of these when our kids were younger.
your husband is totally missing the point. It’s not that the museum has to interest him exactly it’s that it’s a fun thing to do with your 10 year old and you’ve probably only got a couple more years when your son will be up for doing things like this and not just skulking in his bedroom too embarrassed to be seen with you.
I think it’s your duty to explain this to DH and to say you do want him to come with you. He’ll probably have fun and be pleased he went. My DH used to moan a bit about that sort of thing but now the kids are grown up he’s glad he went.

Thepeopleversuswork · 09/10/2026 07:37

I love the London Transport Museum. Its one of my favourite museums. I would totally go.

Why does he need to go with you?

Frantle · 09/10/2026 07:42

I don’t understand why you need him to go with you. It would bore me rigid, but I get that not everyone is going to find an exhibition of Agnes Martin grid paintings as riveting as I would. “Boring’ is subjective. When we were at the Uffizi in Florence, DH said ‘If I see another Annunciation, I’m going to scream.’

deplorabelle · 09/10/2026 07:44

Not interested in a transport museum? Is he unwell? This would be high on my family's list of ideal days out. We have a bus museum near us too and it's right next to the train station so we took our two regularly from a young age.

Apparently I'm only allowed one maritime museum per holiday though as my husband is inexplicably less interested in seafaring than I am. It's one of his major deficiencies.

Autumnalgal13 · 09/10/2026 07:50

I literally said in my op I’d happily go on my own.

The reason I suggested it to dh is because we usually do things together with ds at the weekend.

This thread was only intended to be lighthearted to see if most people would find looking round the transport museum a bit boring. Because I can see why some people would but I find it fascinating and full of local history.

The London transport museum is one of my favourite museums ever. My other one is the V&A so quite a difference.

I didn’t know it existed.

Are you ok? You’re being weirdly nasty over something like discussing a day at a museum.

I would go to please someone else, wouldn't hate it, wouldn't care one way or the other. But I could spend all day walking through botanical gardens. We're all different.

fizzywidget · 09/10/2026 07:57

Curiosity is a fabulous character trait and only to be encouraged, my daughter is naturally curious and it’s wonderful. Far more boring to sit at home doing nothing, the world is there to be explored and enjoyed, and transport museums are great.

Moistcottonchafers · 09/10/2026 07:59

Not boring at all. I bloody love a transport museum, or any kind of exhibit relating to transport, war etc. HMS Belfast is one of my favourites.

Last weekend I was at the Sinsheim museum in Germany OP. They have a Concorde and a Tupolev on the roof set at take off pitch that you can climb up into and explore. Some of the planes have a slide taking you all the way back to the bottom floor of the museum. I went into two U boats as well.

Weekends don't get much better than that. 😅

itsmeitsyou · 09/10/2026 08:01

Go have fun - enjoy any model train sets there for me please.
PS our local one is half price if you use local transport to get there and show a ticket 😁

Ive lived in same area my whole life (55). About 2yrs ago I found we have a small maritime museum just on an industrial estate about 15mins away. Absolutely NO idea. Speaking others either they didnt know about it at all, or they've been, no in-between!!
I found even whwn I wasn't that bothered about going somewhere it was something we did with our kids who always loved it, regardless, so it was a fun day!

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · 09/10/2026 08:43

I didn't think I'd like the tank museum, Concorde in Bristol or the Fleet air arm museum as I have no interest at all in any of those things (didn't even know what air arms were). All three are brilliant! They are just so well done, the simulators make you feel like you're in a helicopter, submarine, ship deck under fire e tc . I was worried my kids would be bored stiff and detract from their dad's enjoyment but we've been several times as they were so good. I say go for it!

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/10/2026 08:47

I love a transport museum. I wait eagerly for the London Transport Museum to release tour dates for their Acton depot

BigYellowBus · 09/10/2026 12:41

Leave your husband at home and take me! I love an old bus. Or old train. And if there's a tram I'm in heaven!

Blarn · 09/10/2026 12:45

If its Wythall, go, it's lovely! Just a really pleasant few hours.

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 09/10/2026 12:49

I absolutely love a boring museum! I love the little every day insights into how people used to live, and I think there’s something weirdly romantic about old buses and trains. Treat yourself to a scone and a pot of tea in the cafe too!
