Aibu to want to visit the transport museum?

This is a lighthearted thread btw.

I realised that we’ve got a local transport museum full of old busses as well as other vehicles. It’s only a few pounds entry. You can get a bus ride on one of the old buses around the local area too. They’ve got a good selection there.

I suggested to dh that we go go with our 10yo ds.

He said yes but I could tell he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic. I asked him are you actually interested in going or are you just saying yes. He said he’s not remotely interested but is happy to go if I want to.

That’s absolutely fine and I’d be happy to go alone, but am I a boring bastard?

Yabu - you’re boring no one cares about the transport museum
Yanbu - it’s interesting dh is the boring one

I love old forms of transport - buses, cars, trains, boats, planes…and have wandered around a few interesting old museums in my time. Probably better to go without him if he might spoil your and DS’s enjoyment with a “do I have to be here?” Attitude

Quine0nline · 09/10/2026 16:33

Ill send you dh. He's right into that. Me too a bit.

Beaulieu Motor Museum - Hampshire
National Railway Museum - York
Haynes Motor Museum -Yeovil
Fleet Air Arm Museum -Yeovilton
Concorde Museum -Bristol
Helicopter Museum -Weston-super-Mare
Maritime Museum-Falmouth
Jim Clark Motirsport Museum- Duns
Tank Museum- Bovington
Portsmouth Harbour
National Museum of Flight- East Fortune
Lifeboat Museum- Tenby
Royal Yacht- Leith (not strictly a Motor museum but you can visit the engine room)

We've been to all the above.

Im the only female in the family so I've had to adapt. I'm just waiting for the Fashion Museum in Bath to reopen in a couple of years time so that i can subject DH and DS to my interests.

keepingitclean · 09/10/2026 16:36

I do stuff like this on my own all the time

user1471538283 · 09/10/2026 16:40

I think it sounds great but I love old stuff. We've got one in our city and between my DS and Godson I've been so many times! I also love those recreated Victorian towns.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/10/2026 18:43

DH and I both love Cathedrals and Churches. We visit one wherever we go. We also do obscure museums, even though the kids have all grown now. Plenty of the places we have been , have turned out to be a great couple of hours for the kids. They always have something to catch youngsters imagination. One of their favourite places
was an old Victorian amusement arcade museum in Rye, and an old toy museum although I have completely forgotten where that was.

Makebelieveanotherlife · 09/10/2026 19:17

We’ve been to the London Transport Museum more times than I can count. It’s interesting as something to see once, but I find it so boring tbh. That stuff doesn’t interest me at all. Much prefer the science one

JoannCourcyIveGotThePowerNSoul · 09/10/2026 19:40

I'm not a petrol head I don't even drive.
How ever I do like seeing vintage vehicles that have been restored in the correct way.
And also the social history side of how transport affected people's lives.
Not boring.

Go to Dundee - small but fun transport museum, Discovery ship (of Scott of Antarctic fame), a much older vessel called the Unicorn you can also tour & great roof top cafe at the V&A.

Go soon, they are closing 31st October and opening might not be early 2027 due to the big move to Maryfield.

Oh thanks for that! I didn't even know this existed and I am in Dundee every other weekend just up the road at the football! Am in Dundee for business next week and have time to kill so I will pop in.

I must be the most boring bastard ever then as I regularly go to museums and art galleries on my own.
In fact the LT Museum is on my list of 'must visit' things before the end of the year.

OhMyGodSusan · 09/10/2026 20:32

You would love Beamish museum.

But no go! Your dh is the boring bastard 😂

Very reasonable, love a transport museum! If anyone is passing near Crich tram museum (Derbyshire), I’d recommend a visit, it’s wonderful. You get to ride up and down an old fashioned street on trams, there are sheds full of old colourful trams from all over, a museum, and a tea room - what’s not to like?!

And a TARDIS!

JKFan · 09/10/2026 20:39

Enjoy yourself OP. There’s a transport museum near me which I’ve never been to as I grew up visiting trains and trams, so somehow buses don’t seem as much fun, but when I see the old buses on the bypass I keep thinking I must add it to the list of places to go when I have people staying. If yours is the same as mine we generally head Uphill instead.

I went round Discovery a couple of years ago. I agree it’s very well worth visiting.

It is, can’t believe I didn’t know about it.

It's a good few hours out and the burger van does yummy food. We took our 4 year olds and they enjoyed it.

Definitely easier with kids than the Police Museum in Birmingham. With that I struggled to explain corporal punishment.

Another place if you enjoy local history is the Think Tank.

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 09/10/2026 20:56

I've absolutely bugger all interest in transport but last year went to the Coventry Transport Museum. I was gripped from start to finish. It's the stories around transport I enjoyed e.g. women's fashions changing when bicycles came about. The transport thing is just a hook to hang a lot of history on.

Solmum1964 · 09/10/2026 21:26

Not a transport museum, although we have done several of those but only visited our local one last year and we've lived here more than 30 years! We're very excited to be going to Crossness the week after next. It's a Victorian sewage pumping station. Unfortunately it won't be steaming that day but it looks like a spectacular building!

😂😂We've lived here more than 30 years. Knew about it but had never been until last year!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 09/10/2026 21:29

I’ve been at the London one about ten times this year - my kids love it

i often bring my 2 year old just for a few hours on a Tuesday morning as I’m not at work that day and we have a great time

JaceLancs · 09/10/2026 21:32

I love a good museum - unfortunately my DC are grown up and DP is not as interested as I am so it’s not something I do as often as it’s not the same on my own
Waiting for DGD to be old enough to appreciate

Solmum1964 · 09/10/2026 21:42

Autumnalgal13 · 09/10/2026 16:01

Police museum is another place on the list I want to go.

The one in Birmingham? I went with a school trip a couple of years ago - it was very interesting.

FluffytheGoldfish · 09/10/2026 21:43

I enjoy a transport museum and love old trams and trains but was surprised at how much I enjoyed the National Museum of Flight in West Fortune as planes are more Dh's thing. Its history as an Airfield during both world wars was fascinating and I loved the Concorde.
Glasgow has the transport museum but there is also the Bridgeton bus garage. And I just realised they are doing twilight bus trips!

Cornishclio · 09/10/2026 21:45

We just did the London Transport Museum as my husband wanted to visit. I thought I would be bored but wasn’t. It was more than a few quid though 🤣
