Aibu to want to visit the transport museum?

This is a lighthearted thread btw.

I realised that we’ve got a local transport museum full of old busses as well as other vehicles. It’s only a few pounds entry. You can get a bus ride on one of the old buses around the local area too. They’ve got a good selection there.

I suggested to dh that we go go with our 10yo ds.

He said yes but I could tell he wasn’t particularly enthusiastic. I asked him are you actually interested in going or are you just saying yes. He said he’s not remotely interested but is happy to go if I want to.

That’s absolutely fine and I’d be happy to go alone, but am I a boring bastard?

Yabu - you’re boring no one cares about the transport museum
Yanbu - it’s interesting dh is the boring one

If its Wythall, go, it's lovely! Just a really pleasant few hours.

It is, can’t believe I didn’t know about it.

I’m wondering if ds will even be interested.

He does like museums and a bit of history but he might find it a bit boring, or he could love it and it might spark an interest in local history.

I am a convert to transport museums. I'm curious about history generally but more social history. But autistic DS's first special interest was buses so we've been to a lot. Can highly recommend Brooklands Museum to anyone Surrey way. They also run bus rallies where vintage bus owners turn up and they are all very generous about showing their buses.

But I've always loved a niche museum and I think it's a cornerstone of DH and my relationship that we'll happily check out the oddest, most niche museum in any place we go to. PPs who love maritime museums - I'm also a big fan.

Takoneko · 09/10/2026 12:56

You can’t beat a good transport museum. I actually spent this morning at an awesome railway and maglev museum in Nagoya.

I've been to a couple of transport museums in the UK and the kids love them. They're quite fascinated by the really old buses and other stuff they had in there.

Just go and leave your DH at home if he doesn't want to go. You and your DS will have a fab time!

YANBU

I absolutely love industrial history, whether trains, buses, cars, agricultural machinery etc. I'll always go to industrial museums, heritage centres, steam railways, traction engine rallys, etc., whenever I'm near one.

I think my "love" of all things industrial heritage came from doing my History O level on the agricultural and industrial revolution (Britain Since 1700!!) where we had an exceptional, very old (probably 70+) teacher who passed on her massive enthusiasm for the subject, making every single lesson fun with anecdotes and examples that brough what could have been a boring subject to life.

Unfortunately neither DH or DS are remotely interested, so I've spent a lot of time "dragging" them around such museums! Ironically, DS is more interested in castles and stately homes which offer me no interest at all yet I've gone along to them because he loves them!

Picklelily99 · 09/10/2026 13:25

Glasgow's got one - it's GREAT!

fizzywidget · 09/10/2026 14:44

Oh and if you ever get chance to go to the telegraph museum in Porthcurno, I highly recommend. It’s not massive but they’ve made it fun for kids, it’s got a nice cafe and it’s right by a lovely beach.

Add your random sounds-boring-but-isn’t museum suggestions below!

It is, can’t believe I didn’t know about it.

It's a curious mix of families and People Who Like Buses. But very friendly and I only visited a year ago, also after living nearby for years!

I love the London Transport Museum. Its one of my favourite museums. I would totally go.

Why does he need to go with you?

So do I.
I bought a terrible DVD there called
Piccadilly Line - Past and Present
which my children still like to mock.

Hatty65 · 09/10/2026 15:03

I'm not voting, because you are not boring and I'd quite like to go to it. However, your DH isn't boring either - you asked if he wanted to come with you and DS and he said Yes.

You then demanded to know whether he was actually personally interested in it or not. That's above and beyond. I've been to all sorts of things with DH that he wanted to see that I wouldn't have bothered with myself.

Similarly he's wandered round vintage fashion markets with me that I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have visited as a lone bloke. He's not into vintage dresses but he'll take me and we will have lunch somewhere.

user293948849167 · 09/10/2026 15:15

I can’t vote because it would not interest me particularly but would take a 10 year old if they wanted to go, and have fun.
I also would’t call you boring for wanting to go, people just enjoy different things.

I love a transport museum and I’m definitely not that interested in modern vehicles, I just find the old stuff fascinating!

TorroFerney · 09/10/2026 15:23

having been to the police museum in Kuala Lumpur (had a room full of confiscated weapons that was both amazing and terrifying) , a museum somewhere else abroad that was transport stuff and had a fire engine made local to me (small world) the spy museum in Berlin the railway museum in York no just go !

boring people are people who have no interests not people who get out and about and acquire knowledge. But also if someone did say you were boring what would be the impact? Nothing.

Magicmagician · 09/10/2026 15:42

Very reasonable, love a transport museum! If anyone is passing near Crich tram museum (Derbyshire), I’d recommend a visit, it’s wonderful. You get to ride up and down an old fashioned street on trams, there are sheds full of old colourful trams from all over, a museum, and a tea room - what’s not to like?!

VictoriaEra · 09/10/2026 15:52

They’re brill. I went on my own too. Better than taking someone reluctant.

I can't vote as your options are daft.
Obviously some people care.
The fact it is interesting to some doesn't mean it is interesting to your dh.
Your dh has said he is happy to come along, for the day out, even though he isn't particularly interested. Not sure what your complaint is really.

The most exciting part about it is the miniature train ride.
Even if you don't have a small child with you.

I mean, I went when it was Emergency Services Day back in the Summer - lot more to see then - but it doesn't particularly appeal to me to go back and spend time looking round the buses. However it is nice to get out and about and do different things when you are able, so, like your dh, if you or your dc wanted to go, I'd go with you.

Autumnalgal13 · 09/10/2026 16:18

The bit about it being boring was supposed to be lighthearted and a joke but that obviously hasn’t come across.

I can see why a lot of people would recoil at the thought of going to look at old busses and I just wondered whether it was something that would interest many people.I

I haven’t got any complaint and I have already said I’d be quite happy to go on my own, or I could take ds or take a friend or my brother.

I went to those places when my children were little because they loved them. Personally I would rather have swerved it because I am not interested in cars or buses or planes, but that doesn't matter. It's about taking an interest in what your family likes.

DH doesn't much like birdwatching, but he takes me to wildlife reserves because he knows how much I love it.

It's ok to like different things.

Tarkan · 09/10/2026 16:24

DH and I went on honeymoon to York so I could take him to the railway museum. I’d been before and I just knew he would love it. Some people thought it sounded weird for a honeymoon but that’s totally our thing rather than lying on a hot sandy beach somewhere.

I love a transport museum. I’m not particularly interested in cars, motor vehicles p, buses etc…except in an ooh shiny kind of way. But they are usually fascinating sources of social history. Who was using charabancs etc…. That I am very nerdy about. It’ll do a good scone too.

Highly recommend the https://www.britishcommercialvehiclemuseum.com/. Had to be in Preston for a couple of days and filled a very wet morning very happily here!

I'd like to see that!

We have a local one and we love it! My two year old son and one year old daughter are both vehicle obsessed so we go regularly, the little train ride and the bus rides are fun!
