Aibu to find Mr Bates a bit creepy?

I'm watching Downton Abbey this afternoon because it's a Sunday. I've watched it a million times but I still can't see why everyone is/was shipping Anna and Mr Bates. He's creepy and has a nasty side, while she's quiet and kind.
Am I the only person who thinks this?

I actually stopped watching the series part way through because I just got so bored and fed up with the whole Anna/Bates storylines....I found them quite boring and repetitive after so many seasons ....

I can't make "shipping" into anything useful. Is it a typo or slang that I don't know? I agree with you though. He always made me feel a bit uneasy.

It's short for relationship, i.e. people thinking two people should be in a relationship, or being fans of the relationship if it already exists.

And yes, Bates is creepy, I didn't like him either.

Personally I think they changed a story line midway to give the audience what they wanted. I can't remember the series but it was after the whole ex wife murder trial. When Anna was assaulted she didn't tell him for fear of him killing the man who did it. That's a pretty extreme reaction for someone married to such a 'nice guy', most people would never think that way. She was prepared to sacrifice her whole marriage to prevent this information getting out like she trying to protect him from himself. Then the man dies. Then she is saying he couldn't possibly kill a man. And of course he is innocent again. I think the original story was that he killed this man and she covered for him, and then we find out he killed the wife too.

BBC2 had a war movie from the 1950s on yesterday. Doesn't make it suddenly contemporary!

I agree! I’m currently watching the SPOILERS assault storyline and his behaviour is diabolical - poor Anna having to worry about managing his feelings when she should be managing her own!

Well yes they do talk about relationships and all sorts of things in AIBU. . Generally they are subjects anyone can have an opinion on. TV is different because it requires specific interest in and knowledge of tv programmes and imo is a niche subject best discussed In the board specifically created for TV devotees.

I never liked him either. He always seems to be holding himself back from expressing his true temperament and it’s very stressful to watch.

I think if they had made him a secret murderer it would have been a more believable story
