Aibu to find Mr Bates a bit creepy?

I'm watching Downton Abbey this afternoon because it's a Sunday. I've watched it a million times but I still can't see why everyone is/was shipping Anna and Mr Bates. He's creepy and has a nasty side, while she's quiet and kind.
Am I the only person who thinks this?

Not sure about that, I saw the title and knew straight away who op was referring too.

I thought it was about Mr bates and the Post Office and had to click to see how he was creepy.
BTW never watched either programme!😀

Unless it’s to do with the transportation of goods from one country to another “shipping” isn’t a thing. Yabu.

Just because you don't know about it doesn't mean it isn't a thing. 🙄 Get on AO3 and educate yourself!

I saw the title and wondered what was so wrong with the campaigning Post Office guy.

I assumed it was Norman Bates we're talking about. * *

chattyness · 05/10/2026 01:28

Oh nooo!!! I adore Mr Bates ! All the more for me then, yum!

I thought it was going to about Mr Bates Vs The Post Office

EDIT: Should have scrolled through first as am clearly not the only one. Lazy thread title.

It turned out to be another victim who murdered the rapist, and Bates had an alibi after all. Anna was arrested for the murder and then cleared when the real killer confessed and was charged with manslaughter.

I liked Bates’s character actually. A brooding individual with a chequered past who had a happy ending with the woman who had stood by him.

Anna had such a tender heart and felt for his suffering. I found Bates noble and rather courtly.

But this has raised before (when Downton was airing) its not a new thought

piscofrisco · 05/10/2026 05:54

I flipping loathed Mr Bates throughout. Sanctimonious, dull, bad tempered, a touch creepy and clearly prone to temper and violence . Not sure what Anna saw in him.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 05/10/2026 06:42

Well yes, I think Norman Bates is meant to be creepy, or am I thinking of the wrong Mr Bates? Good film though.

Completely agree. He’s a creep. Plus he has such a martyr complex, blowing up his life needlessly to do the “right thing”. He would be a nightmare to date!

creepy or not he looked damn fine when younger

Wow - he is the image of one of my cousins!!

Yes, but people are allowed to talk on a talk forum in fact it's actively encouraged. Mumsnet would be ever so quiet if people only permitted new thoughts.

"I can't get my baby to latch on my breast"

" this has been raised before it is hardly a new thought"

Damn there goes my post about Pride and Prejudice

I would not like to meet him in a dark alley.

girlswillbegirls · 05/10/2026 13:25

I am an absolute fan of Downton Abbey and I watch it to scape my mundane existence.
We must start a thread about it :-) I can see I'm not the only one.
I don't find Bates creepy and I understand the staff downstairs had very limited choice in potential relationships. But the story around Bates and Anna is quite dark. Didn't enjoy the episodes during after Anna's raping and how her number one priority was to hide it from Bates. So incredibly sad.

I had no idea what A03 until reading your comment and then googling it. It seems to be something to do with fan fiction which I have zero interest in (hence no knowledge)
Do you spend time learning about things in which you have no interest?
Im about to go and learn how to draught.
It’s very likely just as I have no interest in your hobbies you have none in mine and that’s ok.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 05/10/2026 21:53

The endless lack of communication between Anna and Bates got tedious. FGS just talk to each other. Stop hiding things and just communicate!

Its just the whole "oh am I the only one....." type posts, they're jusy annoying

I'm not trying to be awkward but I do wonder why people start threads about TV programmes on AIBU , or Chat, when there is a whole board dedicated to television : Telly
Addicts.
I've never watched Downton Abbey.
If you had started your thread in Telly Addicts you are much more likely to find the answer to your question OP.

Does it matter?

TempestTost · 07/10/2026 04:29

Felixthewonderdog · 04/10/2026 20:04

It was odd casting. They probably should have had a younger actor for the role: there’s no way Anna would fancy him

Why wouldn't she fancy him?

This is the strangest attitude I've ever seen to be honest.

"Do you spend time learning about things in which you have no interest?"

Yes, every day! How else do you know if you'll like it or not if you don't learn anything about it? I'm forever looking up random new things based on a passing reference in conversation. I love learning new stuff and seeing how niche sub cultures and hobbies are structured.

I can't imagine ever deciding "right, I have my hobbies, time to shut the whole world out and never learn anything new again".

Curiosity is the centrepiece of human existence and should be kept well fed at all times.

BirdLandedonmyHead · 07/10/2026 05:56

Im surprised sny of them still had children after the number of parental deaths connected to births.

Depends what you mean by matter.
In the grand scheme of things , no, not in the least.
But as a very very minor annoyance and perplexity, yes.

Witchfoot · 07/10/2026 07:26

Downton Abbey was about the only programme my whole family would sit down and watch at the time, and we all HATED Bates.

We used to boo and hiss when he came on screen 😂

He definitely killed Mrs Bates #1.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 07/10/2026 12:20

He also killed Mr Green.
