I'm watching Downton Abbey this afternoon because it's a Sunday. I've watched it a million times but I still can't see why everyone is/was shipping Anna and Mr Bates. He's creepy and has a nasty side, while she's quiet and kind.
Am I the only person who thinks this?

Do you know his son Master Bates?

🤣🤣🤣 this was what i was thinking. Of course he's creepy with a name like that

Doggymummar · 04/10/2026 17:10

I read between the lines and figured he murdered his wife and the rapist

CloudyBayPlease · 04/10/2026 17:12

I agree, also there’s absolutely zero chemistry him and Anna which adds to the ick factor.

I felt the same about Carson and Mrs Hughes marrying. It seemed dreadfully unlikely at their ages.

ginasevern · 04/10/2026 17:17

I preferred Upstairs Downstairs.

usernamebetty · 04/10/2026 17:17

I think they have zero chemistry, he’s too old for her. If it had been when he was a bit younger he was not bad looking and it could have been ok

PistachioTiramisu · 04/10/2026 17:18

I think he has a kindly face and seems relatively sensible, but what put me off him were the wedding night scenes when Mary prepared a guest bedroom for him and Anna. He had rather hairy and pudgy arms and back which I found very off-putting - each to their own!

SnappyPenguin · 04/10/2026 15:49

Yes, he annoyed me so much. Anna deserved better.

She really did! He brought her nothing but misery!

HatStickBoots · 04/10/2026 17:23

I also thought this thread was about Mr. Bates vs the post office! 😀

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 04/10/2026 17:32

Oh, I always quite liked Bates 😬.

Silverbirchleaf · 04/10/2026 17:35

’m going to have to rewatch it as I quite liked Vates also.

Yes, not to mention Carson telling Mrs. Patmore that he expects a "full marriage" with Mrs. Hughes.

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

As if he'd discuss his putative sex life with an elderly virgin.

If Carson and Mrs. H are incapable of talking about sex together prior to their marriage, then they shouldn't be considering said marriage.
Mrs. H is a post-menopausal virgin.
Sex is unlikely to be possible, especially with an overweight elderly man who probably can't get an erection anymore anyway.

Shloopie · 04/10/2026 17:48

I hated that the 'did Bates shove the rapist under a bus' saga dragged on and on. Would the police in the 1930s really have spent that much energy investigating a might have been murdered/might have been an accidental death of some servant?

YankSplaining · 04/10/2026 17:51

I liked Mr. Bates. He was a good person not because he never wanted to do bad things, but because he stopped himself from doing them.

I thought it was just me. I hated Bates with a passion. Ruined the series for me.
He's turned up in another series I'm really enjoying ( the actor not Bates).

Gourdgirl · 04/10/2026 17:55

I loved him

PickledPup · 04/10/2026 18:36

I found him to be an insufferable prig. Probably why I've never re-watched it!

In what way is he a prig?

MissCooCooMcgoo · 04/10/2026 18:50

Bates is an ex soldier. I expect he could kill a man in cold blood with his bare hands.

cornflakecrunchie · 04/10/2026 19:09

Never watched anything like that. I prefer the peasant type stuff to the upper class progs.
I watch Catherine Cookson progs every Sunday afternoon, a REAL treat! Love them.

FruityFrog · 04/10/2026 19:11

@cornflakecrunchie Bates is a servant! Downtown is about both upstairs and downstairs. You might like it!

I haven't seen Downton Abbey but I'd a soft spot for Brendan Coyle when he was younger.

Jim Carter's voice is up there with Roger Allam in terms a pure delight to listen to.

I saw the title and wondered what was so wrong with the campaigning Post Office guy.

I'm so glad I'm not on my own for that thought 🤣 phew! I was like "what's he done?" 🤣

This, he wasn’t supposed to be a Mr Nice Guy. He was a man with a very hard and chequered past who wanted to put it behind him.

All this talk of NAMALT, yet he kills his wife’s rapist and everyone is up in arms about it! So what. We want men to take action then when one does it makes him the devil?

Not sure about the ex wife but 😬 she was baying for his blood and kept going after him so I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

Personally I love a man with a menacing air.

flapjackfairy · 04/10/2026 19:41

creepy or not he looked damn fine when younger
