Aibu to find Mr Bates a bit creepy?

I'm watching Downton Abbey this afternoon because it's a Sunday. I've watched it a million times but I still can't see why everyone is/was shipping Anna and Mr Bates. He's creepy and has a nasty side, while she's quiet and kind.
Am I the only person who thinks this?

Downton Abbey is my comfort tv, I've got it on my phone when I'm in the kitchen, so I knew exactly who the OP meant right away.

It was proved that Bates couldn't have killed Vera, and that she'd set him up for it.

But if you're looking for historical accuracy, then DA really isn't the place to look for it. It's all kinds of chocolate box nonsense.

Felixthewonderdog · 04/10/2026 20:04

It was odd casting. They probably should have had a younger actor for the role: there’s no way Anna would fancy him

cartagenagina · 04/10/2026 20:07

I found their entire storyline boring as hell.

metalmum15 · 04/10/2026 20:30

Well I’m bang up to date because I’ve just literally finished watching the whole show for the first time ever 😆
I find him creepy and not suited to young pretty Anna at all. Also not keen on Carson and Mrs Hughes
I do like Mrs Patmore and Mr Mason. Now there’s a lovely couple! And I think Isobel was much better suited to Dr Clarkson 😆

mondaytosunday · 04/10/2026 20:38

I think it’s the actor. He has a certain way of speaking .

Stinkybooks · 04/10/2026 20:43

Unless it’s to do with the transportation of goods from one country to another “shipping” isn’t a thing. Yabu.

Stinkybooks · 04/10/2026 20:47

flapjackfairy · 04/10/2026 19:41

creepy or not he looked damn fine when younger

True!
But isn’t that the one where he and the little girl of the house become friends, then run away and ultimately end up together as a couple?
Perhaps not the best example!

FruityFrog · 04/10/2026 20:48

@Stinkybooks 'Shipping' is a term that's been around a long time in fanfiction circles. It's not a new term. I like it as it's a short way of saying something more complex.

At least the OP is bang up to date with her TV references... Downton Abbey, indeed!

Meanwhile, what does everyone think about Larry Grayson taking over from Brucey on the Gen Game?

That actually properly made me laugh

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 04/10/2026 20:53

Completely agree. I couldn’t rewatch it because he creeps me out so badly. No idea if it’s the character or the actor. Something a bit Walliams about him.

APlagueOnBothYourHouses · 04/10/2026 21:06

I think it’s the character because the same bloke plays the dad in Larkrise to Candleford and he is not a creepy weirdo lurking in doorways in that. He’s a sensible dad who always gives good advice, loves his wife and is a fine stonemason to boot.

I agree, also there’s absolutely zero chemistry him and Anna which adds to the ick factor.

I felt the same about Carson and Mrs Hughes marrying. It seemed dreadfully unlikely at their ages.

Urgh agreed, and don’t get me started on Mrs Patmore and the farmer

I don’t really see the issue. Not interested in the thread? Don’t reply.

He was a good character in North and South too so I think it was a definite choice to play Bates the way he did.

Hmm I don’t know, rewatching lark rise to candleford right now and I think he’s a bit of a twat in it

I think it was more companionship with them and I love Paul Copley so I thought it was sweet!

But not creepy. And him and Emma with the shawl did have chemistry unlike Bates and Anna.

You can’t fault his stonemasonry surely! Shock

Calling · 04/10/2026 21:51

I never detected any chemistry between Bates and Anna.

True..... according to urban dictionary it started as a word in certain types of fiction around 2005.

Some sentances are giraffe and others are pineapple and thats house as long as donut green.

RandomUsernameHere · 04/10/2026 22:17

He was definitely batting.

cornflakecrunchie · 04/10/2026 22:18

@FruityFrog Fruityfrog oh, thanks, I thought it was all uppercrust! The photo that @flapjackfairy posted is from one of the Catherine Cookson films!

LizzieW1969 · 04/10/2026 22:39

It turned out to be another victim who murdered the rapist, and Bates had an alibi after all. Anna was arrested for the murder and then cleared when the real killer confessed and was charged with manslaughter.

I liked Bates’s character actually. A brooding individual with a chequered past who had a happy ending with the woman who had stood by him.

ForPearlViper · 04/10/2026 22:46

I found the character creepy to extent that it has spilled over into the actor in other things. But I generally have an aversion to the dark and broody male who just needs saving by a good woman trope.

LizzieW1969 · 04/10/2026 22:56

I wouldn’t want that type of man myself, I hasten to add, or a man that needed saving. Too complicated! I just like the character in a film or drama.

Edited for typo.

I'm not trying to be awkward but I do wonder why people start threads about TV programmes on AIBU , or Chat, when there is a whole board dedicated to television : Telly
Addicts.
I've never watched Downton Abbey.
If you had started your thread in Telly Addicts you are much more likely to find the answer to your question OP.

Am I the only person who views threads via Active? In this it doesn’t matter if this thread gets put in Telly Addicts, Relationships or even Baby Names, it would get equal access on my feed
