AIBU to ask if we are doing alright financially?

I’m 30 with 2 kids under 3
I am married and I work part time whilst DH works full.
The kids go nursery 3 times a week.
I am able to save £250 a month and also invest £250 a month too. I contribute £400 monthly into my SIPP as I’m self employed.

I can’t do any more than this currently as I would rather not work more than 3 days while the kids are small.

I have £40,000 invested. We have a small mortgage of around £65,000 left on our home.

My husband also had savings but he’s using them to take over an existing business franchise.

Are we doing ok as a young family?

Of course you are. You work part time, save well in a pension, have savings and investments and a small mortgage. You’re doing considerably better than a large proportion of the population.
who said you weren’t doing well…

NotDeadYet6 · 30/09/2026 18:17

You’re doing great. You have more savings than 80% of the uk population.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 30/09/2026 18:18

Yeah you are.

ShitFacedShakespeare · 30/09/2026 18:19

Lol

MyOliveStork · 30/09/2026 18:20

You are doing a million times better than we were when we were 30, with three young children. We had no savings and lots of debts!!! Doing a lot better now 20 years later but I would have been so happy to be where you are at your age. Well done!!!! 👍

ChihuahuaChica · 30/09/2026 18:32

Of course you're doing okay. Ffs...🤦🏼‍♀️

Fidgety31 · 30/09/2026 18:33

Are you just showing off ?

Itsniceoutside · 30/09/2026 18:37

With investments and a low mortgage you’re ahead of most people. I am mid forties with zero savings (it’s been eaten by 4 kids, our house and our bad luck with cars!!)

missmarybennetsspectacles · 30/09/2026 18:37

Wow - what a great position to be in.

I am stunned that you need other people to tell you that.

Statsquestion1 · 30/09/2026 18:38

What about the value of the house?
what is the household income and can that be improved?
how much in your emergency fund?
how much does your dh save?

I would say you’re doing ok but could be better i suppose?

FourEyesGood · 30/09/2026 18:39

Thanks for making me feel like a complete loser, OP!

Port1aCastis · 30/09/2026 18:40

I'm 47 and have just made my second million am I doing ok?

Blimms · 30/09/2026 18:40

You’re fine for your age. Why did you feel the need to ask?

Clydebuilt · 30/09/2026 18:42

Maybe better asking a financial advisor.

KateBushAgain · 30/09/2026 18:43

This place is mental sometimes

Blimms · 30/09/2026 18:44

I see on your other thread that you had more saved but you had to give 30k to your DH so he could take over a business franchise. I hope for your sake he is making sound business choices. What is he currently employed as?

Apave · 30/09/2026 18:45

My husband also had savings but he’s using them to take over an existing business franchise.

In your last thread you gave him £30k for this

A completely anonymous internet user has typed some information that may or may not be true, and you've let it make you feel like a complete loser? 😳

Blimey, it doesn't take much, does it?

Justaquestionplease · 30/09/2026 18:46
