AIBU to ask if we are doing alright financially?

I’m 30 with 2 kids under 3
I am married and I work part time whilst DH works full.
The kids go nursery 3 times a week.
I am able to save £250 a month and also invest £250 a month too. I contribute £400 monthly into my SIPP as I’m self employed.

I can’t do any more than this currently as I would rather not work more than 3 days while the kids are small.

I have £40,000 invested. We have a small mortgage of around £65,000 left on our home.

My husband also had savings but he’s using them to take over an existing business franchise.

Are we doing ok as a young family?

It appears you are stretching the truth, OP.

cannynotsay · 30/09/2026 19:04

You know you are

SnapAndTap · 30/09/2026 19:23

You are saving 900 a month between pension, savings and investments.
You husband has a FT job and independently has savings.

You are doing brilliantly. Although if you need to be told that, you need to give your head a wobble and do some reflecting on why you don't know you are doing better than most.

Jellycatspyjamas · 30/09/2026 19:30

Do you think you’re doing ok? Surely that’s all that matters.

OutOfTheOtherSide · 30/09/2026 19:30

Blimms · 30/09/2026 18:40

You’re fine for your age. Why did you feel the need to ask?

I'm going to guess it's to get people posting and raise money for MN...

I’m confused. How is this raising money for MN?

Sunbringer · 30/09/2026 19:34

Why wouldn’t you be? What does ok mean to you? What are your goals?

Your question is too vague

You are doing brilliantly and very sensibly.

When I was 30 I spent every penny I had, went out 3 times a week for dinner, bought loads of clothes I didn't need. I had no thoughts of a pension. I wasn't in a great income but I could have saved something. I just wasn't very grown up I suppose

Ionlymakejokestodistractmyself · 30/09/2026 19:40

Why are you asking?

Yes you are doing extremely well. At 30 I was renting, at 47 I have a mortgage twice the size of yours for a small house.

Yes, you are exceeding at posting goady threads. Well done.

MN is funded by advertising. Companies only advertise if they think they are getting sufficient exposure. Basically the more posts, the more advertisers are likely to pay. So MN creates lots of threads that are likely to be controversial and therefore create lots of traffic. More traffic = more money. Most of the big forums do it, it's standard practice.

From a reader's point of view it doesn't hugely matter but I do think forum owners should be forced to label their own posts so people can choose whether to interact. It might also save some blood from boiling on threads like this which is clearly designed to piss people off.

Can we just make stuff up? If so, I’m doing great too 💁🏼‍♀️. Mortgage paid off, kids in private school, multiple luxury holidays a year and I’ve got a million in the bank!

Seems ok but we cant really tell from this post.

Is the home you own 100% ownership, or part. Is it a small flat, terrace, or family house with 3 bedrooms? Its great to have bought something, but if the small mortgage is because there's 4 of you packed into a small flat, its less of a strong financial position than if you're in a longer term family property and wont incur costs to move again later on.

Where did the savings of 40k come from? If you are a high earner & saved from your wage, this is a better sign about your finances than if it was a one off windfall like a gift from family, an early inheritance or an insurance payout.

Do you have any debt? Do you both earn well, do have prospects for good earnings growth.

OnlyOnWeekends · 30/09/2026 19:57

I wouldn’t be happy with that but if it’s the best you can do, it’s the best you can do. Hopefully things will improve in a few years.

DinoLil · 30/09/2026 19:58

Stealth brag! 😆

Specialagentblond · 30/09/2026 19:59

I couldn’t save when I had 2 young children so you’re doing well

JennyForeigner · 30/09/2026 20:00

Yes. Have a cookie.

Starzinsky · 30/09/2026 22:17

Most people with kids who work full time can't afford to save anything. Pretty shocked you had to ask.

Thecatspantaloons · 01/10/2026 00:21

And you are the best looking person on this site, to top it off 🤗 well done 💖.

I fear this will get deleted but to me it's so painfully obvious that the contentious frothy threads are completely generated for rage clicks - I hate it when it works too 😩.

It’s a 3 bed semi, it was last valued at roughly £220,000
I saved and invested the £40k before I had kids from my job
My husband is about to take over a well run business franchise and I will be helping him with it as we both work in the same field
