Quote "Clearly it does exist as the government are spending even more of our money to keep it hidden. Only those determined to deny there is a problem can’t imagine why that might be."
Ok. Bit of begging the question fallacy there. But hey ho.
Quote "And thanks for the link but no it doesn’t have the information we are discussing - obviously."
Here is the FOI request.
Crime by nationality for the last 5 years - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)
And the ONS said -" Unfortunately, we do not hold the data you have requested." And " We publish statistics from two main sources: the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and police recorded crime. Both sources provide statistics on crime as they are experienced by victims, or as it is recorded by the police."
And quickly clicking the links in that site, we get this
Prosecutions and convictions - GOV.UK Ethnicity facts and figures (ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk)
That was first published in 2018, updated 2023. And that data is based on 2001 Census data when it comes to categorizing ethnicity etc.
Yes, the data will exist in police files etc, but it is not reported by the ONS because it is not on their list of things to do. That is, they don't collect and collate it. But looking through those ONS pages, it is something they are looking to do in the future.
What did Lammy say. I got this -
Lammy accused of cover-up as Ministry fights to keep migrant crime data secret - London Business News | Londonlovesbusiness.com
"The Ministry of Justice initially refused the request, arguing that producing the information would exceed the cost limits set under the Freedom of Information Act and that releasing highly detailed figures could risk identifying individual offenders in some cases."
That was rejected by the ICO. But the ICO did see a potential issue with identifying people, so they said only larger data sets should be published.
"In correspondence with the shadow justice secretary, Lammy said the department already publishes a “range of statistical breakdowns” relating to foreign offenders and that its statistical releases remain under “continuous review."
They do publish data, but migration watch now want a super detailed breakdown that will take a lot of time and money to sort out. More then the FOI system allows for. It really is one of these things that needs time to sort out.
Also from that article, and on the subject of my last sentence above - " Conservative MP Robert Jenrick described the move as a continuation of a long-running lack of transparency by successive governments, while Centre for Migration Control research director Rob Bates said his organisation would continue pursuing the information through legal channels."
Ah right. That will be the same Robert Jenrick who was part of the last Government, as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Secretary no less. And who is now in Reform. The party that say cops need to be on the beat, and not stuck in an office doing paperwork.
So yes, the information is all there in the system. And it will likely get pulled out the system and put on an ONS report at some point in the future. And it's a pity that Jenrick did not organize that when he was in government.
In the above, I bolded this " We publish statistics from two main sources: the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and police recorded crime"
So this CSEW, Crime Survey for England and Wales, that is here-
Crime in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)
So anyone can see what data is reported to the ONS. Back to Jenrick. He really should have added the data he wants to see now, to the data reported.
By the way. I agree that we can't have enough data. Subject to privacy etc.
