Strong words but is is how I feel at this point in time. All of them make me feel physically sick. The latest example -

not that you’d know that from reading the daily mail that spouts the same lines so we all learn to blame immigration for all that is wrong. The immigrants I know are exceptionally hard working but in very low paid jobs do get benefits to top them up. Maybe employers could be forced to pay an actual living wage?

How is Burnham not doing anything about it?

So you want them to be able to claim contributory benefits if they have paid into these, but not the benefits that they have paid into via general taxation?

So, let's take the example of an Indian doctor who has been working for the NHS for, say, 30 years, paying higher rate taxes and contributing to our society. They have chosen not to take British citizenship because they have reasons for not wanting to lose their Indian passport. And then they suddenly get cancer. You're ok with them not being entitled to taxpayer support despite their contributions over 3 decades? Because they have the wrong kind of passport?

What a very strange take. @placemats is not one of the posters who bangs on everyday about how evil the government is and how every policy is going to sink the UK.

The attendees just helped out a bit. Just gave the security a helping hand by removing the protestor. The attendees wanted to hear Nigel speak and not her so arguably from a utilitarian perspective there was a net benefit.

Sorry that's not working for me. You don't just throw out a generalisation and then expect me to accept it.

HMRC just need to get their act together. When we had local tax officers and tax inspectors who lived in their area, knew when new businesses started up, they were pro active to check they registered and paid their taxes. Nowadays, all the inspectors are in huge office blocks hundreds of miles from where businesses are located and that local knowledge has been lost. Fraudsters know it and that's why they set up multiple companies so that they can trade, close down and strike off before HMRC even notice their existence.

I've had letters from tax inspectors asking stupid questions they wouldn't need to ask if they were local. Such as why a hotel in a seaside resort had very low takings in Winter! Duh! Obviously didn't realise the town (which was a couple of hundred miles from their office block) was a seaside resort.

Back in the 80s when I started, if, say, a new shop opened up, they'd be getting a "new business questionnaire" from the local tax inspector within a couple of weeks!

We all saw that thread. Most posters abandoned it out of disgust, even though there were attempts to reel people back in.

Quite. I have formed my own private judgement on some posters who I am pretty sure are racists. Their language, the threads they choose to post on, it’s pretty damn obvious. But I wouldn’t be so foolish as to name them, as they would report it so fast! I will thus keep my thoughts to myself. And when has a racist ever admitted they are a racist?! Disclaimer: you can have concerns about immigration without being racist, but it’s all in the language and tone.

HMRC definitely could do better! But as @Badbadbunny says, most of the local offices have been closed. It used to be rare not to have an inspection for tax or VAT within two or three years of starting up. And you could phone them up for answers or advice, without holding on for 35 minutes, too.
