Blindness is a serious disability. Not some word to be chucked around for marketing attention. There are a lot of other words that could have been used - mystery box, suprise box.

What about the word 'blindfold'. Is that offensive too? To be blinded, to go in blind. They can have a double meaning. But blind in this case, It simply means without sight. So you're buying them without seeing them.

I am surprised that M&S didn’t pick up on this. It’s not great

They didn't pick up on it because it is widely used......

Just as well Cilla is no longer with us.

😂

IAmInTheHouseSidney · Today 16:18

Blind dates?

I know the word blind is used in lots of contexts - blind baking etc. I don't find them offensive because they are long standing and established uses.
But I don't see any logic in calling a mystery box a blind box. Just why? What is wrong with calling it what it is : a mystery box.
That's what I dont understand.

Why on earth do people go out of the way to find something to be offended by?? This is not offensive, it is an appropriate, actual use of the word ‘blind’.
Give me strength 🤯🤯

Just because there are other uses of the word blind doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be reviewed.

you could say black sheep is ok, because we use black in many other contexts. There is nuance.

plus, things like blind fold blind date etc are hardly “new”- they can be inappropriate and still in common usage, many words are

Is OP coming back?

Mermaidmusing · Today 16:22

Do you also get upset about blind dates, blind baking, blind faith, blind man’s bluff? Get a grip.

I assume you only have curtains on your windows??

We could have had a mash up of Surprise Surprise Date. 😄

TimetoPour · Today 16:24

It depends. Are you:
A) blind and offended
B) a busybody who has taken up offence of behalf of the visually impaired community?

QwestSprout · Today 16:25

The term 'blind box' has been around since 2006 to refer to a sealed package with mystery contents. Perhaps you missed the proliferation of them in the shops in the last few years.

I imagine that’s the point- language from 20 years ago is often considered inappropriate now.

You sound completely fucking batshit, op.

How about blind date, blind drunk, blind stupid, blind bastard, in the blind, going in blind, im sure there is more.

How can you get offended over a word.

Of course you can, and should, get offended by a word. Or rather, not a word, but the connotations it has. Think of words associated with racism as a prime example. Additionally, language evolves and changes so what wasn't offensive 50 years ago is now. And I'm sure in 50 years people will look back aghast. In this instance, I'm personally not offended, but I accept some people might be. Fair play. I'm not offended that they are offended.

How do you feel about blind baking? Is that offensive?

I wondered how long it would be before that was mentioned! 😅

This thread's a bit lame, tbh. (Posted from my wheelchair.) 😉 🧑‍🦽

Why isn't black sheep ok? It means you stand out as different in an homogenous group where to do so can be a disadvantage. Unless you're trying to say the expression really means 'black person' and it's being used as a racist insult?!

I genuinely don’t understand what you’re trying to say here.
Black sheep - is an actual living thing.
Blindfold - an actual thing
Blind date - a term still used, and not offensive imo

Would you rather I say “oh look at that non white sheep in the field?
Should I say “let’s put on this eye covering made of cloth” at a children’s party when playing pin the tail on the donkey?
Me: I’m going on a date with someone I have never met before and do not know.
Friend: oh you mean a blind date?
Me: no, not a blind date, I am not visually impaired. I just don’t know the man.
Friend: (confused) oh, so it is a blind date then.

Just asked my mum, who is blind, and she doesn’t like the name and wouldn’t buy a ‘blind box’ product. I am partially sighted and feel the same.
