AIBU to tell my SIL not to comment on my finances?

KKD09 · 13/09/2026 14:18

I could really appreciate an outside perspective on an exchange I had with my SIL, because I genuinely can’t work out whether I’m being unreasonable or whether she crossed a line.

We’ve known each other for seven years and I have never really called her out on anything before. She can be quite bitchy, argumentative and judgemental, so normally I let things go, but this one didn’t sit right with me. For years she’s been like this with comments, she’s 26, works in a gym and has had no real education and has no respect for anyone besides her husband and 19 month old, oh and her parents. Not her in-laws. I am 37, married and work in corporate and grateful for my role.

I went to visit my family yesterday and I tend to travel around on foot (I am London based, learning to drive). She essentially interrogated me on text about when I was going to pass my driving.

THEN..

She sent me a voice note yesterday randomly saying “I wanted to ask you, those Bad Bunny tickets weren’t cheap. My cousin told me how much you paid. That isn’t saving.” She also sent a load of shocked/laughing emojis and seemed genuinely surprised that I had spent £120 on the ticket.

My immediate reaction was basically, wait, did she actually just say that? I questioned why what I had spent was even being discussed between her and my cousin. Her response was, “I didn’t know it was a secret.” That completely missed my point. It wasn’t a secret as the ticket prices are online. What bothered me was that my spending had apparently been discussed and then she had taken that information and made the judgement, “That isn’t saving.”

I told her I would appreciate it if my finances weren’t discussed or commented on because ultimately they’re personal and don’t really have anything to do with her.

She replied: “I commented as a caring joke to you. Not to anyone else because I know you want to move. You do you. If you took offence to what I said, I’ll be careful in what we speak about in future.”

I then sent her a voice note because I genuinely didn’t want it to become an argument or create unnecessary drama. I explained that I wasn’t offended. I was simply saying that the comment didn’t make sense to me because she doesn’t actually know my financial situation. She doesn’t know my salary, what I save each month, what my husband and I save together or how we manage our money.

I also said that I respect her enough not to question what she earns, how much she saves, what she spends her money on or how she and her partner manage their finances, and I’d just like the same respect back.

I also mentioned that maybe part of it is where I am in life now. I am 36, married, work in a corporate environment and I have just become a lot more private about certain things as I have got older, especially finances. I work hard, I save, but I also enjoy my money when I choose to.

I wasn’t saying that being 36 somehow makes me superior to her because she’s 27. I was trying to explain that I am settled in what I consider a personal boundary. She’s private about certain areas of her own life too, which I’ve always respected. Her response was: “Don’t use the age line with me.” She then started saying things like: “I didn’t say that. I didn’t question how much you earn. I didn’t question this or that.” She seemed to reframe her original comment as though all she had jokingly said was, “Bitch, you should be saving.”

But that wasn’t really what I was responding to. Her original comment was specifically that she’d heard how much I’d spent on the tickets and that “that isn’t saving.” Throughout the conversation she also kept coming back to the idea that I was offended. She repeatedly said, “I didn’t mean to offend you,” and later, “You’re clearly offended.” That’s probably the part that has confused me most, because I don’t personally see being offended and setting a boundary as the same thing.

From my perspective, I wasn’t saying, “How dare you say that to me?” I was saying, “That assumption isn’t correct because you don’t know my finances, and I’d rather you didn’t comment on them.”

She also started explaining that what she’d said came from a place of caring and brought up personal things I’d previously confided in her about, including the stress of living with in-laws (me and husband are gearing towards a move) and difficulties I’ve had with my living situation.

That made me uncomfortable because I couldn’t really understand what those things had to do with whether spending £120 on a concert ticket means I am or am not saving money. Her face has changed a lot since I met her, and I know it’s all fillers and hair injections, but I don’t care! That is where her money goes, you do you 😂

I’m genuinely curious how this comes across to someone completely outside the situation. Was I reasonable to say I didn’t want comments made about my finances? And does correcting somebody or setting a boundary automatically mean you were “offended”?

She is unreal in the worse way. She also threw a dig to the fact she has a child sleeping and needed to sleep, they will be waking up in the night. Fully knowing me and my husband are childless (I don’t let in how much me and my husband wish to be parents). But I hope I offended her because she needs to be bought back down. I am constantly polite to her and she’s so lucky to have ME as a SIL.

I'm so confused by this but I would suggest that she's possibly hinting at the fact you're living with/off the in-laws and saving (presumably to move out) while spending money on concert tickets, whereas she's independent, married with a family.

Except she's still living with her parents. So not independent.

WingnutSOS · 13/09/2026 15:40

“Caring joke” my arse.

”my finances are my business and not up for discussion” is the only response needed here. Don’t get sucked into her drama.

It isn’t really the end of the world, we are quite lucky in fact, but yes it comes with difficulties. This isn’t our forever situation. But I also don’t comment on other peoples situations, I stay far away from her. But she loves a text and being nosy!

But I also don’t comment on other peoples situations,

All you've done on here is comment about her situation! 😂

More shocked than anything because she spends money on hair injections and claims it’s all real, then judges how I spent on an experience?

You're not really doing a great job refuting the suggestion that you're bitter for whatever reason.

RubyHiker · 13/09/2026 15:41

It was a stupidly bitchy comment from her but you created a whole drama.
You both sound incredibly immature

SoSoLong · 13/09/2026 15:43

She should have kept her thoughts to herself, but she obviously thinks you are closer than you are and can have a laugh with you. Clearly not. She sounds nosey, but you've overreacted. And yes, you do sound offended.

KKD09 · 13/09/2026 15:43

InterIgnis · 13/09/2026 15:36

It wasn’t her place to question your finances. You didn’t handle it well though, because you highlighted your own insecurity, and your defensiveness let her know just how much she got under your skin. If that is what she was aiming to do, she succeeded. Rather than feeling stupid and insecure, there’s a fair chance she’s laughing at you. She now knows exactly how to needle you.

So you are not being unreasonable in wanting to shut her down, but you did yourself a disservice in how you went about it.

Hmm. What are these insecurities?

All I did was challenge why the amount was being discussed, with another person. So what does that say? They are talking about me?

I sent her a quick voicenote to explain it was relating to

Edited

Sorry, not independent, doesn’t pay bills at home or any contribution.

I do all of those at my in-laws. We are also paying for IVF, so that would go towards buying a home. Again, we don’t need to share that with my SIL/BIL.

First off you can't control her or her cousin's behaviour. It's non of your business if they talk about you and your finances. People talk and gossip. You can hold yourself to a higher standard, but you would be unreasonable to try to compel any one else to behave in your preferred way.

You can certainly express your opinion to her directly or indirectly when she starts talking to you about her judgements on your finances. You can be as polite or as direct as you like about that. Where you did go wrong was to over explain yourself. You have a boundary, fine. So state it and move on. The more you explain the more weak your boundary and you appear. Why do you feel you need to justify it? And why do you care about her opinion of you when you hold her in contempt?

Why are you paying for IVF when you don't even have a home to raise your child in?

But why spend any time with her, far less confide in her? I’m quite fond of several of my SILs, but I don’t tell them anything personal. I don’t see why you’re offloading on someone you only know by accident and dislike thoroughly?

This.

pippistrelle · 13/09/2026 15:48

She can say what she likes and you can think what you like about that, but you don't have to engage with her. It's probably best if you don't.

But it seems a bit rich that you don't want her to talk about you, while you're perfectly prepared to discuss her shortcomings on a public forum.

ShanghaiDiva · 13/09/2026 15:52

You seem to have created a drama out of nothing. I wouldn’t even engage with that type of comment.

GetBernie · 13/09/2026 15:54

I think you've completely and utterly over-reacted. She wasn't 'discussing your finances' with her cousin. She was discussing the cost of the Bad Bunny tickets.

She was discussing your finances with you. Inappropriate and unnecessary to comment on maybe, but hardly the crime of the century and certainly not worth you making an issue over it.

I think the way it has been explained sounds like it’s dramatic, but it actually spanned over an hour with a delay of responding.

She wouldn’t like it if I did the same thing. When I have made a comment about something, that has nothing to do with her, she wants to get her two pence in, so I think I can defend myself here?

Her text was rude, but it does sound as if you've confided in her about difficulties with MIL, which, whilst not directly about money, clearly is connected if you're planning on moving out once you're set up.
You have a very very odd attitude regarding age, OP. Ten years gap is nothing. She doesn't owe you anything because you're slightly older.

Oh dear op. The age think isn’t the trump card you think it is.

I mean she has a point.is that why it hurts so much?

I agree! I was with you op until you mentioned age as a natural respect. I mean come on. Is it 1859? Do males deserve more respect too?

godmum56 · 13/09/2026 15:59

I am a bit surprised you bother to answer her texts at all...I mean you could actually block her? Do you ever want or need to talk to her unless you are face to face?

Notsosweetcaroline · 13/09/2026 15:59

You’re really hung u0 on the fact you’re a decade older and clearly feel you’ve made it in life more than she has, as you contribute to living with your in-laws. The fact you’re older doesn’t make you her superior.

in reality you’re in a much much worse situation

youre not competing with her op. You’re not better than her, and yes she should not have commented but you’ve clearly told her you don’t like living with your in-laws and are saving to move out. So blowing money on concert tickets when you want to move out seems a little silly.

powersthatbe · 13/09/2026 15:59

I think you could have shut the whole conversation down a lot quicker with “I earn enough to save and buy concert tickets”.

You had it in your hands to minimise the drama her comment brought to your door. Despite suggesting you are more mature than her, I would beg to differ.

You are both acting like 12 year olds.

Random321 · 13/09/2026 16:00

This is unhinged.

You are completely overreacting and as other posters have said it's immature.

Life is too short for to spend time on it.

All you have to say was "yes but we all needthe occasional treat".

The end. Instead you are excalating. Tbh, it sounds like you were spoiling for a fight.

Sorry you need IVF but it's not her fault her either.

PinkFrogss · 13/09/2026 16:00

Make sure you don’t tell her you are trying to conceive
