AIBU to tell my SIL not to comment on my finances?

KKD09 · 13/09/2026 14:18

I could really appreciate an outside perspective on an exchange I had with my SIL, because I genuinely can’t work out whether I’m being unreasonable or whether she crossed a line.

We’ve known each other for seven years and I have never really called her out on anything before. She can be quite bitchy, argumentative and judgemental, so normally I let things go, but this one didn’t sit right with me. For years she’s been like this with comments, she’s 26, works in a gym and has had no real education and has no respect for anyone besides her husband and 19 month old, oh and her parents. Not her in-laws. I am 37, married and work in corporate and grateful for my role.

I went to visit my family yesterday and I tend to travel around on foot (I am London based, learning to drive). She essentially interrogated me on text about when I was going to pass my driving.

THEN..

She sent me a voice note yesterday randomly saying “I wanted to ask you, those Bad Bunny tickets weren’t cheap. My cousin told me how much you paid. That isn’t saving.” She also sent a load of shocked/laughing emojis and seemed genuinely surprised that I had spent £120 on the ticket.

My immediate reaction was basically, wait, did she actually just say that? I questioned why what I had spent was even being discussed between her and my cousin. Her response was, “I didn’t know it was a secret.” That completely missed my point. It wasn’t a secret as the ticket prices are online. What bothered me was that my spending had apparently been discussed and then she had taken that information and made the judgement, “That isn’t saving.”

I told her I would appreciate it if my finances weren’t discussed or commented on because ultimately they’re personal and don’t really have anything to do with her.

She replied: “I commented as a caring joke to you. Not to anyone else because I know you want to move. You do you. If you took offence to what I said, I’ll be careful in what we speak about in future.”

I then sent her a voice note because I genuinely didn’t want it to become an argument or create unnecessary drama. I explained that I wasn’t offended. I was simply saying that the comment didn’t make sense to me because she doesn’t actually know my financial situation. She doesn’t know my salary, what I save each month, what my husband and I save together or how we manage our money.

I also said that I respect her enough not to question what she earns, how much she saves, what she spends her money on or how she and her partner manage their finances, and I’d just like the same respect back.

I also mentioned that maybe part of it is where I am in life now. I am 36, married, work in a corporate environment and I have just become a lot more private about certain things as I have got older, especially finances. I work hard, I save, but I also enjoy my money when I choose to.

I wasn’t saying that being 36 somehow makes me superior to her because she’s 27. I was trying to explain that I am settled in what I consider a personal boundary. She’s private about certain areas of her own life too, which I’ve always respected. Her response was: “Don’t use the age line with me.” She then started saying things like: “I didn’t say that. I didn’t question how much you earn. I didn’t question this or that.” She seemed to reframe her original comment as though all she had jokingly said was, “Bitch, you should be saving.”

But that wasn’t really what I was responding to. Her original comment was specifically that she’d heard how much I’d spent on the tickets and that “that isn’t saving.” Throughout the conversation she also kept coming back to the idea that I was offended. She repeatedly said, “I didn’t mean to offend you,” and later, “You’re clearly offended.” That’s probably the part that has confused me most, because I don’t personally see being offended and setting a boundary as the same thing.

From my perspective, I wasn’t saying, “How dare you say that to me?” I was saying, “That assumption isn’t correct because you don’t know my finances, and I’d rather you didn’t comment on them.”

She also started explaining that what she’d said came from a place of caring and brought up personal things I’d previously confided in her about, including the stress of living with in-laws (me and husband are gearing towards a move) and difficulties I’ve had with my living situation.

That made me uncomfortable because I couldn’t really understand what those things had to do with whether spending £120 on a concert ticket means I am or am not saving money. Her face has changed a lot since I met her, and I know it’s all fillers and hair injections, but I don’t care! That is where her money goes, you do you 😂

I’m genuinely curious how this comes across to someone completely outside the situation. Was I reasonable to say I didn’t want comments made about my finances? And does correcting somebody or setting a boundary automatically mean you were “offended”?

She is unreal in the worse way. She also threw a dig to the fact she has a child sleeping and needed to sleep, they will be waking up in the night. Fully knowing me and my husband are childless (I don’t let in how much me and my husband wish to be parents). But I hope I offended her because she needs to be bought back down. I am constantly polite to her and she’s so lucky to have ME as a SIL.

Never explain, never complain… take guidance from the late Queen Elizabeth. Don’t engage with this nonsense. Don’t share any information with her. If she asks you have been very busy with your dogs and horses. This works for all tricky relationships. It is a form of ‘grey rock’.

where do I sound jealous from? She’s a rude person with an awful personality.

Well you said this in your first post:

You also go out of your way in your posts to put her down and make yourself sound superior to her. This is a common trait of someone who is insecure and jealous. If you weren't, it wouldn't bother you.

Wow, so why are you confiding in her as you clearly do.

i understand at 27 with a baby living with parents, it’s not ideal by a long way, but staring down the barrel of 40 and homeless, is a really hard situation.

I can see her point.

Because you go to great lengths in your OP to describe all the ways you are better than her, and yet your lives are pretty similar, except she has a child.

It does sound like it comes from a place of insecurity.

KKD09 · 13/09/2026 15:04

DriedPetals · 13/09/2026 14:59

So why are you continually confiding in her???

The ‘confiding’ is about the issues we both face with in-laws, it is never personal or about my wants/needs, and respectfully, there is a 10 year gap.

you clearly told her you needed to save.

going on about how much better you are than her, isn’t a goood look and of course she can mention her child. Don’t be so jealous.

Ha, I pay the house bills silly!

Why am I silly? I’m not the one living with my in laws 😂

You are nearly 40 and not living independently. If I was in that situation, I probably wouldn’t be buying £120 concert tickets either.

Where was I immature?

You send her multiple messages and a voice note over a one-off comment about a concert ticket instead of just...ignoring her.

Dweetfidilove · 13/09/2026 15:08

YABU for engaging in this foolery. In fact, you both sound as ridiculous as each other.

How would you feel if a 27 year old is telling you how to save, yet she’s booking holidays and I can’t enjoy a concert? She isn’t my mother. She complains about her child all the time, and that she can’t do anything because of them. Not staring down, but unfortunately she is a facade and tries hard to uphold a lifestyle, and I can’t enjoy a concert?

A lot of drama and discussion over nothing. I’d of ignored first message and had a good day.

I would just ignore it and get in with my life. Who cares what she thinks? It only bothers you because there's an element of truth to what she says.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 13/09/2026 15:11

What comes across to me more than anything is that you think you are better than her because you’re older, have a better job (in your opinion) and earn more. She probably knows that you feel that way if it’s anything like it comes off the post you’ve written in real life so she probably couldn’t resist a dig.

KKD09 · 13/09/2026 15:12

But do I need her to tell me to save, no lol. She can mention her child, but this is the same child she complains about and leaves at home. All I did was respectfully tell her to not comment on my financial status lol. Age has a lot to do here, it’s being respectful and not crossing boundaries!

I can’t see why there were so many messages and drama. Should have just replied with “they weren’t cheap but really looking forward to going” or something similar. You’re taking it too personal.

Which is why do you need to pass judgement on how I save.. it’s really simple, and that’s all I was referring to.

But you’re in exactly the same position, living with in-laws, despite this ten year age gap. And obviously finances come into that. If you’re unhappy living with your ILs, you would move out if you had more money saved.

Gazelda · 13/09/2026 15:18

You’re not coming across as much better OP. She said something that about a topic you consider none of her business. Your response seemed to imply you were offended (which many posters on this thread have also interpreted). There was then a back and forth where you each gave as good as you got.

its obvious you don’t like her. Your response seemed consider her inferior. You consider yourself a model DIL and corporate worker. I suspect she knows what you think of her. And what you think of yourself.

I suggest you keep out of each others way until you both grow up. It must be exhausting for people to be around you when you’re together.

So you think she should automatically ‘respect’ you because you’re ten years older? I think she thinks of you as a peer, as you both live with your parents/PIL.

I hadn’t respond to her 5 minute voicenote, I didn’t have the time. All I heard was her telling me she cares about me and because I spoke about saving, she’s twisted it.

“All I did was respectfully tell her to not comment on my financial status lol”.
Fair enough.
But you all sound very enmeshed with each other’s living situations and business, you live with your parents, she lives with her in laws and it certainly sounds , well, at least not easy for anyone .
It seems cultural pressures are having an impact on your families too and making the break may be more difficult because of this. Nonetheless, you’re working towards your goal so perhaps try not to let her distract from that. She annoyed you, I get it. But you can rise above that.

Sorry, I’ll just explain. She is married to my husbands brother, and they live with her parents. She is married into the family. I live with my in-laws, fil is an alcoholic and mil enables

So move out? I was in the YANBU camp until I read you're still living with your ILs in your late 30s.
