my older 2 boys share a room theyre 17 and 14 and dont really get along but sharing is usually fine
the only issues is gaming as they only have 1 tv and it’s a small room so often argue over whos turn it is but its usually ok

yesterday my ds1 had a headache and wanted to go to sleep but ds2 wouldnt turn the tv down which led to arguments and in the end i told him to turn it off all together it was nearly 10pm anyway so he had to go to bed because he had school he wasnt happy but he listened

today ds1 was still feeling unwell but he went to college and got home at 5 and seemed worse now like the cold had got worse thru the day

ds2 had been home since before 4 and was on his playstation since then as he had no homework and his day at school had been good

ds1 wanted to go to bed but couldnt due to the tv and i asked ds2 many times to turn it down and he kept saying no
in the end he came to have dinner but then after dinner was the same thing he said it was only 6 so he wasnt going to and on the end i turned the internet off which led to him shouting at me saying how ds1 is my favourite etc and stormed off and now im left sondering was i wrong to have turned the wifi off be ause he refused to turn it down
its the first time ive done this really so im questioning myself

YANBU. You did the right thing. Can he not use headphones?

Zanatdy · 07/09/2026 20:58

He needs to be considerate as worse thing when someone has a headache having loud noise. Teens aren’t known for their consideration for others though.

Fidgety31 · 07/09/2026 21:00

YABU for expecting teenagers to share a tv in their bedroom !
life would be much less stress if they had their own screen with their own headphones each !

Ifeelold48 · 07/09/2026 21:00

I would have turned it off because he told me no. He is way too big for his boots.

Why would you question it? He needs to be considerate of his brother and as he wasn't you had to intervene. It sounds like more boundaries/clearer expectations around respect for others and screen use are needed.

Catza · 07/09/2026 21:16

Has he ever heard of headphones? If not, why not?
At 14 he has raging hormones, I wouldn't pay any attention to what he says to you at this point. It's all just a lot of hot air. Not only would I have turned the wifi off, I'd actually make sure he is having time off from the playstation for a few days.

ETA: just read your post again and noticed that you asked him multiple times and he said no..and was allowed to carry on??! I would have confiscated the playstation after the first no.

Woahtherehoney · 07/09/2026 21:17

Could DS1 not have gone to sleep in your room as a compromise for one night so that he got some sleep but DS2 could also do his thing?

AssassinsEyebrow · 07/09/2026 21:17

You disciplined a child appropriately when they were behaving selfishly, of course you're not unreasonable

Grumpyoldcat · 07/09/2026 21:20

Dont ever question a sensible decision you make regarding gaming time. Can you set the thing up outside of the bedroom. Not an ideal location.

gamerchick · 07/09/2026 21:22

Why can't be wear headphones if he's on the PlayStation. Can't hear the telly then.

Boreded · 07/09/2026 21:22

Yesterday I took my son’s ice cream from him and put it in the bin because he called me a tool.

Even the nicest of kids can be selfish occasionally and need to be punished appropriately. Mine is 18 and I still did it, no guilt felt at all here. If you act like a dick you lose out unfortunately.

Int olden days when tinternet was dial up I would often take the Ethernet cable if my daughter was taking the piss. I’d give her an hour, remind her time was up, it’s so addictive.

During school holidays I would take it to work with me so she didn’t go on it all day and run up a mahoosive bill.

You’re not being mean, you asked him several times and he ignored you, actions have consequences, he needs to understand it’s not just him that lives in the house.

dinosaursroars · 07/09/2026 21:45

he doesnt use headphones when gaming only if hes playing with people but you can still hear the sound from his game anyway as its just a way to talk to his friends

Back before t'internet was a thing, when my sisters and I wouldn't stop fighting over the telly, my mum cut the plug off with a pair of scissors. She said she would, and we didn't believe her, so she did.

My dad rewired it the next day so he could watch the cricket, but we learned our lesson....

So what. You ask him to use headphones. Just because he doesn't, doesn't mean he can't or shouldn't. If he won't, then he doesn't go on playstation. End of discussion.
Children need boundaries, start setting them before it gets out of hand.

Moominhug · 07/09/2026 22:12

Can the gaming be set up in the living room so their bedroom is quiet space?

Ie. Yanbu. But that sounds like an intolerable use of a shared bedroom even without a headache in the mix

I bet that ruined your relationship and now you and your sister have very little contact with her 😳.

Eh? Why would someone have no contact with their mum because of that? They were warned, they took the consequences, they leaned to do as told. Why would you, as an adult, say that it ruined the relationship and end contact?
