my older 2 boys share a room theyre 17 and 14 and dont really get along but sharing is usually fine
the only issues is gaming as they only have 1 tv and it’s a small room so often argue over whos turn it is but its usually ok

yesterday my ds1 had a headache and wanted to go to sleep but ds2 wouldnt turn the tv down which led to arguments and in the end i told him to turn it off all together it was nearly 10pm anyway so he had to go to bed because he had school he wasnt happy but he listened

today ds1 was still feeling unwell but he went to college and got home at 5 and seemed worse now like the cold had got worse thru the day

ds2 had been home since before 4 and was on his playstation since then as he had no homework and his day at school had been good

ds1 wanted to go to bed but couldnt due to the tv and i asked ds2 many times to turn it down and he kept saying no
in the end he came to have dinner but then after dinner was the same thing he said it was only 6 so he wasnt going to and on the end i turned the internet off which led to him shouting at me saying how ds1 is my favourite etc and stormed off and now im left sondering was i wrong to have turned the wifi off be ause he refused to turn it down
its the first time ive done this really so im questioning myself

the living room isn’t my bedroom.

Then he can play in there. But he shouldn't be doing it at that time anyway, god knows who he's talking to, and I suspect he needs to do more homework rather than game anyway.

I cant believe you're asking this. This is called parenting.

SouthLondonMum22 · 07/09/2026 23:01

You did the right thing but too late. Why were you letting him repeatedly tell you no?

BlueMum16 · 07/09/2026 23:01

dinosaursroars · 07/09/2026 22:52

the living room isn’t my bedroom.

So why can't the PS be in there?

I imagine because of the younger DC who won't want to be watching games for teenagers.

murasaki · 07/09/2026 23:11

Well they could have the TV until 8, go to bed, he can have gaming until 10, and then bed for him. No phone in his room.

notwhingingjuststatingfacts · 07/09/2026 23:14

Get rid of the tv and the PlayStation!!! Neither of them need to be rotting in front of screens. They have shown they are not mature enough for them so they don’t have them! 🤷🏻‍♀️

bittertwisted · 07/09/2026 23:22

Far too much screen time, set a limit then remove the controller

Shes 78 and can still strip paintwork with the glare of her disapproval, but also love you out of any hole you fall into.

They don't make them like that any more 😁.

The world needs more Mrs Murasakis.

😂😂A Tool.
I like that one. Don't hear it often enough.

Yeah I maybe would have laughed if he had said it to my face and not on a group chat with his girlfriends parents (we are on holiday and his girlfriend is there too) - but when he then sat himself down and looked at me like I had kicked his puppy I saw red 🤣

BoredZelda · 08/09/2026 03:12

With this one event you acted appropriately. You might want to have a chat with him about why he feels his brother is favoured. My mum would swear up and down that my brother wasn’t, but his wants and needs were definitely put before ours. Pretty much always.

Copperoliverbear · 08/09/2026 03:18

You was not wrong it sounds like he spends too much time gaming. I’d limit the time altogether and hour each a night say and help them to find other interests. I feel they can become obsessed with games.

liveforsummer · 08/09/2026 03:42

The only thing you did wrong was allow this to go on so long. He’d said no to you several times. Internet off or device removed should have happened and the first no!

Sussexserpents · 08/09/2026 04:17

I seriously doubt someone in first year of GCSEs has no homework…

but to answer your question no it wasn’t unreasonable. You were being the adult

he doesnt use headphones when gaming only if hes playing with people but you can still hear the sound from his game anyway as its just a way to talk to his friends

He's using a microphone headset not headphones.

its not possible for the playstation to be in the living room.

Would you like a tutorial?

Palomiino · 08/09/2026 05:03

YANBU - you are teaching him that the least you can do is be considerate towards another person when they’re feeling ill, especially when that person is his brother!

Pretty sure OP has 5 kids in a 2 bed house. The living room is her bedroom. There really isnt room.

So? She still could have temporarily put the TV in her bedroom just while one of the DS was sick. Then she can ensure when he goes to bed he isn’t keeling up his sick brother who needs rest.

he only had quizzes which didnt take that long to do.

That’s fair… but it is going to be more soon so you’re going to need to have a conversation with him about rules of using play station or tv. Turning the internet off seems like a good idea. Do it every night if you have to. Teens that age need consistent rules and boundaries in place. Do you have current rules on tv/ps usage?

You haven’t brought him up as a decent lad that you can trust to hang around outside of the house? 🧐

Sussexserpents · 08/09/2026 11:45

OP you sound a bit defeated and exhausted with that statement and I do really feel for you but it should not be a choice of spending all his time gaming or he’s out causing trouble. If he causes trouble - there needs to be consequences. Take his phone off of him, cancel the phone contract. Put the PlayStation in the bin. Sell it. Turn off the internet. You are the adult and the parent - you are in charge!

i haven’t bought him up just to cause trouble i don’t get the judgement in your response.
