my older 2 boys share a room theyre 17 and 14 and dont really get along but sharing is usually fine
the only issues is gaming as they only have 1 tv and it’s a small room so often argue over whos turn it is but its usually ok

yesterday my ds1 had a headache and wanted to go to sleep but ds2 wouldnt turn the tv down which led to arguments and in the end i told him to turn it off all together it was nearly 10pm anyway so he had to go to bed because he had school he wasnt happy but he listened

today ds1 was still feeling unwell but he went to college and got home at 5 and seemed worse now like the cold had got worse thru the day

ds2 had been home since before 4 and was on his playstation since then as he had no homework and his day at school had been good

ds1 wanted to go to bed but couldnt due to the tv and i asked ds2 many times to turn it down and he kept saying no
in the end he came to have dinner but then after dinner was the same thing he said it was only 6 so he wasnt going to and on the end i turned the internet off which led to him shouting at me saying how ds1 is my favourite etc and stormed off and now im left sondering was i wrong to have turned the wifi off be ause he refused to turn it down
its the first time ive done this really so im questioning myself

She's a legend Grin

She most certainly is. A glass ceiling breaker in her day. And she wasn't taking our shit and with the benefit of hindsight, rightly so!

I bet that ruined your relationship and now you and your sister have very little contact with her 😳.

Assume your joking!

YABU for expecting teenagers to share a tv in their bedroom !
life would be much less stress if they had their own screen with their own headphones each !

Or if the screen was removed from their room altogether!

Edited to add: OP you were absolutely right to turn off the WiFi

GreatWideOcean · 07/09/2026 22:18

I don't think you did anything wrong. If someone needs rest and sleep in the bedroom, then that takes priority. I think you need to find a way to move the gaming tv out of the room.

Yes, I just realised that.

Assume your joking!

@Merrybandofpirates I am joking! I agree @murasaki mother is a legend, and that's the kind of thing my mom would do.

It's just that every time someone suggests a suitable consequence for poor behaviour, MN says they are ensuring their children will hate them.

Happyjoe · 07/09/2026 22:22

When you ask your son to turn it down a few times and he refuses you're left with no option. Lesson learned, listen to mum! Needs some headphones or take the TV out of the room if can't play respectfully.

Bananacrepewithnuts · 07/09/2026 22:23

Boreded · 07/09/2026 21:22

Yesterday I took my son’s ice cream from him and put it in the bin because he called me a tool.

Even the nicest of kids can be selfish occasionally and need to be punished appropriately. Mine is 18 and I still did it, no guilt felt at all here. If you act like a dick you lose out unfortunately.

😂😂A Tool.
I like that one. Don't hear it often enough.

BlueMum16 · 07/09/2026 22:24

Both boys need to learn to share. Headphones in their room.

PS and TV out of the bedroom.

lincolnsosig · 07/09/2026 22:25

Remove the TV from the bedroom. It sounds bad enough that they are having to share a small room without adding to it with these noise issues

Back before t'internet was a thing, when my sisters and I wouldn't stop fighting over the telly, my mum cut the plug off with a pair of scissors. She said she would, and we didn't believe her, so she did.

My dad rewired it the next day so he could watch the cricket, but we learned our lesson....

Your mum sounded like mine! I can remember my brothers (shared a room) refusing to clean up on a Sunday so mum could change sheets on Monday and hoover etc, Monday was bed changing day.

Anyway, mum threatened to throw all of their stuff outside (downstairs bedroom) that was on the floor/beds if they didn't clean up before Monday as she'd had enough of them not doing it. They didn't believe her.

They came home from school with all their things on the front lawn, LP's, books, games, clothes, all chucked out the window. They cleaned up going forward!

You’re a parent. Why are you asking strangers about your discipline?

this shouldn’t even be a debate

Why would you think that? Consequences used to be a thing. Op did right to turn the Internet off.

NullaEffugium · 07/09/2026 22:29

Yanbu, but you should not have a TV in a shared bedroom.
At the very least, if this situation repeats, you should have set DS1 up to game on the TV in the living room.

AQuarterPounderPlease · 07/09/2026 22:30

Were you wrong? Hell no. Well done that mum.

dinosaursroars · 07/09/2026 22:32

its not possible for the playstation to be in the living room.

Top work there.

Time was, when the pattern was 'state consequence, give chance, enact consequence if misbehavior continues.'

Lesson learned, all move on. And still laugh about it decades later.

Although I am still a bit peeved I missed that episode of the Crystal Maze 🤣

If there is a TV, then it is. Oh wait there’s a TV in the bedroom, ah look I can unplug it and carry it to the living room…

Ofc it is possible OP.

Then just get rid of the damn thing altogether. There’s no way I could tolerate this arguing and fighting over it.

JustMeSimply · 07/09/2026 22:39

Find it hard to believe you can't have two tvs, our older boys share a box room atm with bunk beds and have a tv each one above the other on wall bracket with shelf under each with the console on they use and works perfectly fine, headphones each. Even the younger knows what his time is for turn off and bed so never need to ask..they can also watch there prime,Disney etc as they prefer different things

Pretty sure OP has 5 kids in a 2 bed house. The living room is her bedroom. There really isnt room.

Your mum is fabulous.

Shes 78 and can still strip paintwork with the glare of her disapproval, but also love you out of any hole you fall into.
