To think these sporting events should be banned?

My niece was at the formula one in Italy this weekend.

404,000 people attended, most of whom didn’t seem to be Italian from her words. She told me she bought “at least” ten bottles of water this weekend. 11 teams flying in, flying their drivers in by private jet, and then out again. 404,000 people making extra journeys that they didn’t need to make.

The impact on the environment must be awful. AIBU to think these events should be banned for the sake of the environment?

Um nope. Should we stop all events that require people to move about the globe? Do you know how many thousands of people would be out of work for just F1 alone?

No, I don’t think stopping something millions of people enjoy, making many people redundant, would be a good idea.

Yes absolutely nobody should leave their homes ever again, no driving, no flying, no sailing. We should also stop using the internet and heating our homes and water.

Do you feel the same about the Olympics, and the football World Champs thing we’ve just had? There are lots of sports that have World Championships type things that people will travel for (competitors and fans), should we just stop them all?

Pedant alert: 404,000 people didn’t attend. FI attendance is given as the total over the whole of the race weekend. Many people attend all three days, and so are counted 3 times.

I do think there is an issue of governments understanding climate change, understanding what needs to happen, but not acting.

Pretty selfish to think it is ok to put thousands of people out of work because you think that an event should be banned because of climate change - which we can do nothing to halt, because it's a natural phenomenon.

I don't watch F1 so I'm not biased but do you never travel anywhere? Holidays aren't essential and I'm guessing you and your family must go aboard. I think it's abit naive to suggest banning sports.

They don’t. Plus even if they did, all of the people travelling haven’t done so by electric vehicles!

Why does their job mean we should all suffer?

Why hone in on one particular sporting event? Surely for your point to matter it'd have to be all air and rail travel cancelled?

Also why does the effect on climate change trump the economies that these events and teams of travel contribute to? Imagine all the people whod be out of jobs, living on benefits or under employed. Then the knock on effect of less spending and less taxes being paid

It is big business not just 'sport'. Business usually nvolves the movement of goods or people. Without it we would all be subsistence farmers, eating rats or starving when our crops failed!,

Name 1 sport which doesn't involve any travel even not at a global competitive standard. Even local kids football or rugby involves travel to matches.

Get to a certain level and it's European or world champions for every sport. Then you have the Olympics, commonwealth games, world Cup (rugby and football) world ice skating etc etc etc. All involves travel, all attracts big crowds.

I have zero interest in F1 btw but every sport pretty much will have the same thing so unless you are banning all sports and all sports competitions it's a bit of a mute point.

All major sporting events, concerts, trips to the cinema, theatre etc. involve some sort of travel. People's jobs and livelihoods rely on them too.

Ban the lot of it! Everyone should just stay at home in darkened rooms and never go anywhere.

Name one other sport and hobby that involves 24 rounds of international travel, 22 people (at least!) flying private around the world and hundreds of thousands of people descending on cities for the weekend?
