My niece was at the formula one in Italy this weekend.

404,000 people attended, most of whom didn’t seem to be Italian from her words. She told me she bought “at least” ten bottles of water this weekend. 11 teams flying in, flying their drivers in by private jet, and then out again. 404,000 people making extra journeys that they didn’t need to make.

The impact on the environment must be awful. AIBU to think these events should be banned for the sake of the environment?

Fair enough, but go down this road and you're going to have to stop football too, it's the biggest sporting contributor to global warming. I think you've just picked up on a couple of random facts and run with them without thinking about it. Or are you just anti F1 for some reason? Or is it all motor sport? Or all international motor sport? Or people who travel for sport? Or people who travel a certain way for their sport? Or people who travel a certain distance each year for their sport?

These things are microscopic compared to burning fossil fuels across the globe. Or, I hear, Musk wanting to launch 2 million satellites into orbit.

I'm a big environmentalist. I haven't flown since 2019, electric car, vegan etc.

Big sporting events is not the place to focus right now. Maybe eventually some changes can be made to reduce the footprint but outright banning I can't see.

And a large number of American sports - hockey, baseball, basketball - involve multiple rounds, many with rich men travelling by private jet, will do huge amounts of miles over a year.

And when it comes to negative impact climate wise golf is one of the worst sports for the planet.

And the multiple water bottles is 100% on your niece. You can refill a water bottle at f1 events very easily.

YABVU. If you want to live a miserable life not exploring far places or enjoying fun events then you do you, but you can’t force the rest of the world to as well.

Im an F1 fan and agree that (despite all the changes made) motorsport is not a climate friendly activity.

But agree with pp why are you singling out that particular event? Harry Styles is part way through a 30 day residency at MSG. Do you think everyone there is from New York, and going to walk there?

And as for buying 10 bottles of water, that may be due to a lot of stadiums, or events not allowing people to bring in their own food and drink, and in some cases not allowing refillable water bottles. Maybe that should be changed?

Vegan is not environmentally friendly. Your out of season fruit and veg travel thousands of miles and your avocados take thousands of upon thousand of water to produce them

I would venture that glory seeking Manchester United fans for around 20-25 games at Old Trafford involves more travelling and carbon footprint, never mind any other club with a significant non-local following.

The concern re F1 I think is equally or more valid is the role it has in normalising hosting events in countries where women's rights are limited.

And even if they had what fuel would power the power stations used to charge them all?

I’m am f1 fan and agree with this. The number of races held in places with dreadful human rights records is something I’d really like to see reduced. I’m not sad to see the Middle East races cancelled this year.

As said before they don't fly private, except maybe a couple of the top drivers who make their own arrangements. And for this particular race quite a few live in Italy or Monaco so not that far to travel anyway.

Football is probably worse all those international games and if you take into account all the countries where it is played weekly (think of the leagues in this country multiplied by dozens of other countries) and all the amateur and all the school and other clubs, it must be hugely costly in climate change terms from all the travel by car, coach, plane, etc, etc. Let's ban all sports and all entertainment that would be great.

Flying has long been known to make a big contribution to climate change ... hence I do not fly.
But honestly in the main no-one gives a toss. They whizz around pleasuring themselves without a thought.
I don't know how this can be changed if people do not care, which it seems they do not.

F1 is also disgusting in my opinion. The amount of money is obscene . To prove what ? A team with more money spends it on more efficient cars.

The argument that we should not do one thing to help the climate crisis because there are also other things we could/ should do makes no sense.

In fact I do not fly and I also buy British to avoid air miles. It is not easy as many "home" brands are in fact made far away.

@Nofeckingway There is a cost cap in F1. The teams all spend nearly identical amounts on their cars.

And let’s not talk about the impact of soy and the various GM foodstuffs.

You do understand that most soy production is for the meat industry, right? 75-80% of all soybean crop goes to animal feed.

Soy wax is really not an issue. The beans that are used to produce it end up as animal feed in the end. The meat and dairy industries are the main driver of soybean production, not people buying candles and wax melts.
