Husband opens blinds in baby’s room

The baby only sleeps in there - nothing else. He insists on going in every morning to open the blinds and the shutters to let light in because it’s ‘unhealthy’ not to do it (I’ve asked what he means and he just says it is dull without the blinds open). They aren’t blackout blinds, just normal blinds, so there is plenty of light in there during the daytime.

But, I’m almost always the one that puts her down for a nap or bedtime. So every time I take her up I have to try and negotiate fiddly blinds with one hand, while being pinched and grabbed because she wants her milk and to go to sleep but won’t with the light streaming in.

so, AIBU to insist he stops bloody opening the blinds for no reason? He thinks I’m wildly over reacting and it’s fine to pull them down when I go in to put her down for a nap.

Or maybe she'll say: you put him down and make sure he sleeps ))

Maybe she will... she's a grown adult she can do that too. Instead she's having a commotion on the Internet.

Napping in the light helps babies develop Circadian rhythm; I swore by it and my children were quick to sleep through at night.

Open at start of day, keep open for nap, close at night. That's what I'd do.

It's really impossible to say if that's the reason your children slept well.

My child has always slept well and I used a blackout blind for naps in the day.

Bababear987 · 06/09/2026 16:51

Omg people are acting as if this child never sees sunlight. The child will be lifted from its room and taken to a bright room. I have blackout blinds sellotaped down so light cannot get in to my boys rooms, we can open the window but not the blinds. Who cares? Honestly the child only sleeps in the room so it Doesn't matter if theres sunlight there or 15seconds later in the next room child is brought to.

diddl · 06/09/2026 16:59

If he's doing it to "air" the room for example, why doesn't he then pop up at some later point before nap time & close them again?

Or you hand him "baby" whilst you do it?

ChristmasRager · 06/09/2026 17:05

I can’t stand it when the blinds aren’t open. I get where your husband is coming from. It just feels depressing and lazy and I can’t quite explain why! X

Non issue

YANBU.

It is literally no skin off your husband's nose to just... not open the blinds in the morning. He isn't going to be in the baby's room at all, it's not going to affect him.

However you do go into the baby's room in the day time and have asked him not to do his weird little foible to save you having to mess with the blinds at nap time and he's refusing.

I'd be annoyed too. It's just a small thing but there's no need for him to do it. He's going out of his way to do something that a. Doesnt need doing, b. Causes you to juggle the baby and the blinds, and c. you've asked him not to do.

Find something small that'll piss him off and start doing it; like putting his coat in the wardrobe upstairs every single time he takes it off, or storing his car keys in a drawer in the kitchen every time he puts them down. Once he's had this insignificant niggle for a few days he might be more amenable to not 'helping' with things that don't concern him.

If this is how you think a healthy relationship works, using petty tactics to piss the other one off, I feel very sad for anyone who has the misfortune to live with you.

Opening blinds is a perfectly normal thing to do. Only on MN would it be seen as some sort of deliberate act of war that requires such a ridiculously childish escalation.

If the baby is getting so over tired that a 10 second delay while blinds are shut is a problem, OP needs to either take him/her to the room earlier or ask her husband to go and shut the blind.

DropEmOut · 06/09/2026 17:15

I’m with your DH. Rooms need airing.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 06/09/2026 17:15

This would piss me off too OP

After disagreements with dh along these lines we now have a house rule that you dont fuck with the light/heat/ventilation in a room youre not actually going to be in.
He would eg walk into a room that only had me in, say "it's too dark in here", switch the Big Light on, then walk out 😡

As I say, he doesnt do it any more, but it had to be explained very clearly that I am an equal partner in the household and also get a say in these things

Jk987 · 06/09/2026 17:33

Nevermind the blind issue, I’ve just read how much you’re taking on and it’s too much unless you’ve got a live in nanny or something! If it were me I’d go down to working 3 or 4 days and keep the kids in nursery 4 days or 4.5. You need time for YOU (not chores, work, caring for the kids).

News flash: this is a discussion board where people discuss thing. Not your job to police who says what.

Yetanotherone12 · 06/09/2026 17:39

He’s right.

uv light is a natural anti bacterial and anti viral and it is healthier to let light in.

there was a study a while back that showed leaving your bed unmade with the curtains opened led to less microbial growth than made beds.

it’s also why hanging washing out in the sun is a natural decontaminant.

I didn't police 😂 You are making shite up now

NewBuildNewbie · 06/09/2026 19:28

Ok I seem to be in the minority, but I totally get this! My husband used to do it too and it used to drive me insane! Id always plan to go in before the nap to close them and then would forget in the chaos of the kids and would only remember as I was putting the baby down and it then stopped them going down and caused overtired meltdowns! In the end, I told my husband either he left them down or he puts the baby down even on the days he's working from home. They stayed down 😂
I just opened the blind for 'air/light flow, whatever' after she'd had her nap. YANBU

There a is a sad subset on here that think being petty- or at least trying to make strangers whose life they don't have to live be petty - is a virtue. I think it is sad and hope that it is only online living vicariously, otherwise it is a pathetic way to live

No one wants a stinky, ill ventilated bedroom, OP!

Whaaaatszuuup · 06/09/2026 20:18

I would never not open the blinds, especially in my child’s bedroom.

I think everyone is missing that the OP said the window is open. How is it slinky?

I honestly think some people think blinds are like and impenetrable door to a vault and that air from an open window cannot pass them.

It’s very warm this evening where I am. My bedroom blind is closed, window behind it open and I have a lovely breeze coming in, despite the blind.

BooBooDoodle · 12/09/2026 18:35

I don’t understand the fuss you’re making. My DH would sit like a mushroom in the dark all day if I didn’t go round opening blinds and curtains. I was able to do lots of things with an arm free whilst holding my babies, pulling a cord isn’t rocket science. Just go upstairs 10 minutes before nap time and sort it out? Natural light is better to help babies with transition and fresh air into the house is beneficial.

MummyWillow1 · 12/09/2026 20:25

I hate leaving blinds closed during the day, open the blind and crack the window - helps keep the room
aired and prevent damp.

Sounds like you maybe need different blinds. And if they barely block out the light is there any point closing them for a nap?

Cherrytree86 · 12/09/2026 22:06

It’s good to have the windows open and the blinds open in the day. End of,

YellowScarfRupert · Yesterday 10:42

Perhaps put baby in the cot then close the blind?

Beabarb · Yesterday 11:47

Cut the strings so he can't open the bloody things! You haven;t got to put up with him making decisions for you, that don't affect him.

@Bababear987

or…she could put the baby in the crib for the 30 secs it takes to open them 🤷‍♀️
