Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

Ime Gen A are struggling a fair bit with ADHD etc on the increase however the trend for trans is largely over. (We all knew it was a trend).

They want to keep it real, from what I can see.

(Disclaimer, I'm not a teacher but also interested what others who are might think).

Meadowfinch · Today 07:34

I'm not sure if many lives have been ruined. The only trans dc at ds's school was ftm and 13yo. The one in the class who was always keen to shock people, sailed close to the wind legally etc.

She met a boy that she liked at 6th form college and seems happy being female now.

The ones I knew were on puberty blockers at 13 and cross sex hormones at 16. I know that was legally cracked down on though but the number of kids identifying seems to have gone down anyway.

The last I heard from them was when we were 20 and I saw a photo on facebook of one of the FTMs and the testosterone had caused a receding hairline. Since then haven’t heard anything from any of them. We’re all 25 now

Crikey, you under a rock? It’s everywhere 😂. Go on the feminism board, they’re still raging

OhMyGoodieAunts · Today 07:41

I think there’s still quite a lot of non binary kids. I know of a few who are aged 10-15. Don’t know about full on trans though.

FilmsandBooks · Today 07:42

It’s definitely on the wane in my area. All the kids I work with think it’s ridiculous and want nothing to do with it.

BeardofHagrid · Today 07:46

That dreadful SacconeJoly family have got one (mtf). He’s about 12 I think and they have fled to Spain recently and got him dressing up as a girl again (when they were in England he’d gone back to boys clothing). I keep wondering what will happen long term. I’m sure they will feature on a crime documentary one day, the mother in particular gives me chills, she is so much like Ruby Franke :(

The latest government figures on Gender Recognition Certificates show an increase in recent years, mostly driven by higher numbers in the 'born after 2000' group (dark blue in the graph) & 'born between 1990 & 1999' group (teal in the graph). So clearly a lot of people aged 18 to 36 are committed to their transgender identity - but age isn't broken down any further so can't tell if the 'born after 2000' group are people in their mid 20s or teens.

My daughter is almost 22, just graduated from university, there are several among her peers from school and uni who are on cross sex hormones, at least two of them are trying to crowdfund for surgery (unsuccessfully as far as I can tell). There were none in her brother's (18) school year. He is starting university next week, be interesting to see if there are any among the fellow first years.
It's the kids who were in their mid-teens when Covid hit who were most affected, I think.

AllJoyAndNoFun · Today 07:57

Yeah I feel like non binary is more of a thing now, especially among girls. It also seems to be region, and, to an extent, school specific within areas- my friend’s dd is at a school in Kent where it’s super common whereas at my dc’s school there are literally none who present as trans or non binary ( similar size and demographic of the two schools otherwise and both schools allow all students to wear a “trouser and tie” or “skirt and blouse” uniform). The non binary girls I know basically look like Emo kids from the 90’s ( nothing new under the sun).

@EricTheHalfASleeve interesting- I guess the other thing is that essentially there’s currently a “backlog” of cases as legally changing gender not been around for that long. Will be interesting to know what the numbers are when that has gone through the system.

not sure what's you AIBU is ? And saying a generations lives have been ruined seems dramatic?

Did you read my follow up comment? Puberty blockers at 13, cross sex hormones at 16 and one ftm had a receding hairline at 20. There’s no going back from that. Do you know about dilation? How skin grafts are taken from the arm to make a phallus?
I think they’ve changed the law in the uk so only adults can medically transition now but the damage has been done to those born in the early 2000s who transitioned as kids.
The fact kids medically transitioning has been banned means we now alll know it’s wrong but no one seems to wonder about those who went through it.

I think it’s definitely on the decrease. The children I know, the ones in my own DD’s friendship groups, just stopped. Walking stocks are in the up in secondary school children.

I agree that medical transitioning of minors should never have been allowed but my understanding is that only a tiny % of children/ teens who identified as trans actually medically transitioned at all, especially girls who considered themselves boys. Happy to be corrected though.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · Today 08:15

There are a lot of videos on TikTok now from people who are detransitioning and who are admitting they were either mentally unwell or getting swept up by the online popularity of it all.

Ikeepforgettingmykeys · Today 08:16

ND diagnoses are possibly more common, at least for now.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · Today 08:17

I really hope you're right and it's over. Where I'm from in rural Ireland, we always tend to lag behind quite badly on the trend front so for me, we're not much past the peak but I can definitely see glimmers of sanity appearing amongst the young people I know. Sadly though, there are still far too many of them entrenched in this absolute nonsense.

Zurbaran · Today 08:17

Several in my DD’s friendship group, she’s 17, and going strong. My sister is devastated that her daughter (16) identifies as a boy and has changed name. I can’t imagine they’ll climb down at uni as it’s prevalent there. Also more context - these are all kids from affluent white families with parents on the gentle side, I think that’s enabled it.

I’d love to believe it was going to be over soon but as PP said, head over to the Feminism board and see how much is going on. And that’s in the UK - lots of other countries have put self id into legislation (but then if it’s a trend that wanes, maybe we end up with few people affected by that).

All the ones I knew were on puberty blockers at 13 and 14. Even if it’s only a small percentage of people it still seems sad they’ve been completely abandoned when in 2016 they had trans kids on the front of a famous magazine and everyone was cheering it on. Most of them had childhood trauma or special needs and should have had better guidance. Now they’ve done irreversible damage to their bodies and society has just moved on from them

There were four trans children in my daughter’s old school and they have all been assessed with autism. I definitely see a link between the two. One is still trans but the others have gone back to their real gender and are gay. I do wonder if being gay and going through puberty made them feel “wrong” and they thought they must be trans to make sense of it?! I do believe counselling should be offered and not hormones. We can all be who ever we want without changing gender.

idontknowhowtodreamyourdreams · Today 08:22

I very much hope it’s on its way out. There are so many internal inconsistencies in the ideology and it has been used far too frequently at the expense of investigating underlying issues such as ND, trauma, abuse, eating disorders. There are many reasons why a young person might wish their body was other - those need to be treated with curiosity and care. Not simply affirmed.

Shedmistress · Today 08:27

It is not over. Just last week, the Good Law Project, who share a director with Mumsnet, offered to fund 24 kids with puberty blockers and potentially cross sex hormones for free, sourced through Anne Health, run by a non medic who herself gave her son puberty blockers and cross sex hormones and took him to Thailand on his 16th birthday to have his penis inverted. In fact her and her mother found it hilarious that his penis was so small at that stage the doctors did not have enough material to work with.

Personally I think a Mumsnet Director adovcating to mutilate and sterilise kids is not 'in the spirit' of any parenting forum but hey ho.

So yes, people are still raging about it all, many people think sterilising and mutilating kids because they like the wrong toys is a bad thing.

I had no idea about this @Shedmistress . That’s horrific.

The Good Law Project is also horrific and an embarrassment to the legal profession.

Its definitely decreasing where I live and I live in a very accepting/bohemian place.

3-4 years ago at least 20% of the people applying for jobs where I work would be non binary and trans. We have had none for the last couple of years.

Also, as others have said, the kids at my son's school who were trans seem to have now stopped

It's the kids who were in their mid-teens when Covid hit who were most affected, I think.

Agree with this. The teens that were most affected by hype/fad are now around university age or slightly older.

I work in a secondary school of around 1500 students and before the fad we had on average three kids that were openly trans. During the peak of the suddenly very fashionable/hype just after covid we suddenly had 4 or 5 kids per year group.

Now it has died back down to around 6 in whole school. Whereas my 20 year olds cohort still has a high number of trans kids/young adults.

Though I believe some kids can definitely be trans for others it is about confusing teenage hormones, feelings of attraction and not knowing who you are going to become. Some kids at the hype were the schools most likely before the trans thing to be have rather bullying personalities or attention seeking. Therefore not for one moment did any sensible staff member feel they were truly trans. However we all still had to just go along with it so long as not too disruptive. In a few cases through it was definitely being used very clearly as a weapon to bully other students or even staff. As much as possible this was stopped but quite frankly it was difficult and the students in question new this.

Glad things have got more normal in school now. No problem with genuine trans kids or those that are just unsure of their gender/sexuality. After all teenage years have alway been about find out who you are. They just didn't include before grown arse adults pushing you into making permanent life choices regarding gender because it was fashionable or whatever.
