AIBU to think £1,000 is reasonable for nearly new DFS sofas?

I bought new sofas from DFS a couple of months ago and have decided I don't like them.

It's a current range (New Libby) and consists of a 3 seater, 2 seater and matching storage footstool. They're basically as new and cost me around £3,000 altogether including the fabric protection. No damage or stains etc.

I know I'm obviously going to take a hit selling them secondhand, but I'm trying to work out what would be a realistic asking price.

If you were looking for sofas and these were currently around £3k new, what would you genuinely expect/pay for them at only a couple of months old?

I'm thinking maybe advertise around £1,000. Am I being wildly optimistic? 😂

Sofas don't hold their value, at all. I wouldn't expect to pay more than £400-500 absolute max.

I agree they're "worth" that but having sold things like this and bought sofas second hand I'd say things are only worth what people will pay and they sometimes go easy cheap if you need rid of them.

if you're happy to not rush then list them and see what happens. Nothing lost, and you can decide from there what you want to do.

If I was looking for exactly those sofas, in that colour, configuration, and size, AND I could somehow be certain your house does not have bedbugs (ie I actually knew you) then yes I would pay £1000 for them.
If I had to compromise on size/shape, or I didn't know you so I was risking my house getting a bedbug infestation, I would pay about £300.

I think 1k is perfectly reasonable given how old they are, the condition and how much they all cost new. You have nothing to lose by trying to sell them at that price.

From your link you paid less than £2,300, not £3000…. Or were you their one customer who didn’t buy in the ‘sale’?

I doubt you’d get more than £500 tbh. Probably less. It’s a cheap brand, hassle to pick up and there are hundreds of cheap/free sofas on Facebook etc.

I'd only buy a second hand sofa if I was unable to afford a new one. I'd rather a new lower quality sofa than high quality second hand. I'd not pay more than £500.

😂😂 no bedbugs, fleas or any other crawlies here. But you're right, you can't be sure if you're buying second hand unless you know the person.

Agree £500 is realistic IME but no harm in trying higher I suppose. I think it will make a big difference if you can deliver or expect people to collect. When clearing my parents house, I found large items take ages to shift because people don’t have the means to transport them.

Yup. I bought a gorgeous, nearly new and totally unused sofa a couple of months ago. £50. Appears to have never been sat on.

It’s not for 1 sofa. It’s for a 3-seater, 2-seater & footstool.

£1000 is a great offer, if they are in good condition as OP states.

Pit them on for that and see what interest you get.
I think £500 would be the max you will get though unless your lucky someone nearby is looking at exactly what u have in the shop. I don’t think any one is paying £1000 for second hand sofa sorry.
My aunt just sold her sofas that were £2500 and she only had them for a year or so, absolutely immaculate condition. She was trying for £500 and ended up taking less than £300 for them both.

Tell me about it. We went with the intention of buying another style but DH found this one more comfortable because of his big lanky legs 🙄😂

Losing that much money just because you changed your mind about the aesthetics seems like a bit of an own goal.

By the time you've paid for a new set you're going to be down the cost of a holiday.

I don't think you'll get £1k fo second hand and many people wouldn't even want the footstool. Also it's cream. Many people with small DC wouldn't be wanting cream. Fine if a couple with no kids but then they'd probably be wanting new.

Secondhand sofas are a really hard sell because the removal is a huge headache, most people have a specific configuration/size/ colour in mind that probably won't be a match, and (perhaps most critically) not many people are in the market at all because of the hygiene/cleanliness element. Lots of people who will buy secondhand furniture won't buy secondhand sofas because you don't know if the home they come from is clean, has animals, smokers etc.

I probably wouldn't pay that much, no, but as pp's have pointed out, if you're not in a rush you're not losing anything by trying. Maybe share them on your personal social media/local fb group as well (and ask dc if you have older ones) - a friend of the family who knows someone buying their first house or whatever might be more likely to pay a bit more from someone their parent/sibling/neighbour knows than a complete random off gumtree.

If you still have the bank transfer or receipt I'd screenshot that (obviously hiding your details) or offer to show it to them when they picked it up as proof of how new they are.

But yeah, given they could buy them new for less than you paid I'd probably revise my estimate.

Honestly I wouldn't pay much mostly because I would think if they are being sold after only a couple months, there is more than likely an issue like they are actually uncomfortable when used for more than a day or two because why else would you sell a sofa after a couple months for so much less than you bought them for? That would just be my thought process.

Also if you buy new you have the ability to go back to the retailer with issues, whereas being second hand you dont, and that to me has some value.

You should get £1k for them but probably £500 is more realistic. No way you can keep them? It's a lot of money to loose.

What is it that you don't like about them? If it's colour can it be rectified with re-upholstering or cover? If it is the size, level of comfort etc, then it's obviously quite difficult to deal with. Nothing to lose by listing them at that price. Try a dedicated second hand site like sofalistic rather than FB marketplace. I believe Sofalistic offers collection and delivery which will definitely help to shift your sofas at this price.

Wouldn't spend £1000 on any second hand sofa unless heritage brand in beautiful unique fabric etc. Definitely not DFS.

I bought 2 sofas and an armchair second hand from eBay for £2000! They were Fired Earth and the original price was £10,000. I think some brands hold their value. If you look on eBay you'll find lots of 2nd hand sofa businesses and you can guage from their pricing how much you can expect.

I sold a bed that I paid £3000 for and only ended up with £400. It had been slept in 20 times max, had an enclosed mattress protector on it plus 2 other protectors. It was pristine but I couldn't get any more for it.
