AIBU to think £1,000 is reasonable for nearly new DFS sofas?

I bought new sofas from DFS a couple of months ago and have decided I don't like them.

It's a current range (New Libby) and consists of a 3 seater, 2 seater and matching storage footstool. They're basically as new and cost me around £3,000 altogether including the fabric protection. No damage or stains etc.

I know I'm obviously going to take a hit selling them secondhand, but I'm trying to work out what would be a realistic asking price.

If you were looking for sofas and these were currently around £3k new, what would you genuinely expect/pay for them at only a couple of months old?

I'm thinking maybe advertise around £1,000. Am I being wildly optimistic? 😂

I tried selling mine in very similar circumstances and I couldn’t get anyone to bite. They wanted to pay £500 and under and didn’t care how much I’d paid and how new they were!

Plus couple of hundred for fabric protection

No, just looking to see what people would pay for it before I do anything.

If you attached your receipt to your ad you are more likely to get the price you want. People would then know exactly how old and used they are.

I wouldn't pay £1000 for a second hand sofa no matter how much it cost new. Probably £500 at the most.
Sofas from DFS are overpriced anyway.

Are they white / cream? Do many people buy such pale colours?

Make sure the 1st picture is excellent. You want it to clearly show all the items included. Also make sure that is in the title.

YANBU to want £1k but I'm unsure if you will get it.

Can you reconfigure it a bit? I got a too large sofa a few years ago. It did fit but didn't look right.

We made it work in a way I hadn't planned.

I really don't think I could justify spending that sort of money again so soon. IMO a sofa should last at least 10yrs

I wouldn't unless maybe I was furnishing a place I wanted to let out (I am not a landlord btw!). If I want a new sofa, I want to try out lots to see which are most comfortable, suit my purposes etc. Unless I'd seen your exact one in the colour I liked in the store, I wouldn't be interested. I don't buy sofas often so I'd want something to keep for a fairly long time so I'd rather spend more to get that.

Not to mention the hassle of hiring a van and getting it in and out of that.

I wouldn’t pay anywhere near that for a secondhand sofa.

My sofas are Laura Ashley ones, one was free and the other £20 or £50 from Facebook Marketplace. Both in excellent condition, one had barely been used and these sofas cost 2/3k each new.

Luckily I have a way of transporting them most people don’t have.

No one wants to pay £1000 for a second hand sofa set. Doesn’t matter what the brand-new price was.

I bought two beautiful sofas from an expensive family owned store. I unexpectedly moved house and they didn't fit my new lounge. They were only a year old and I had to give them away free as there was no market for them. You could try EBay and see if there's any demand for your sofas.

I'm a huge fan of buying second hand, but my rules are never sofa's or mattresses. Whenever I see a sofa for sale on Gumtree or Marketplace, I wonder how many farts have been blown into it. 😲

No, I would put up with it for years no matter how much I didn't like it. Id get used to it eventually!

Have a look on ebay at what 2nd hand sofas looking similar go for. I'd be astonished if you can get £1000, but I might be wrong.

Look up local van companies and get a quote for transporting them within a certain distance. Include that with the listing. Likely to make a big difference.

FWIW, DFS & their ilk have to omit certain ranges from their sale / limited time pricing offers so that they are adhering to the law. Items have to be offered at their non-sale price for a demonstrable period to comply with legislation. So even though DFS has a sale year round, they will cycle the ranges included. it's perfectly possible that OP bought their furniture full price when it was first launched.

I agree that you are whistling in the wind hoping for £1k for your set though, OP. As others have said, you'd probably get that for a better quality brand/maker but it's unlikely for DFS. If you're in no rush to sell, you can always chance your arm and put it on for that and see how it goes.

Do you have to sell all the pieces? Would a couple of pieces still fit the new configuration , so you just sell 1 and lose a bit less?

And there is the problem of collection, which for most people would cost quite a bit unless they happen to have the use of a van. And no guarantee which you would have with new.

People won't pay that much for sofas as they also have to dismantle and transport them themselves. Facebook Marketplace is full of free sofas for this reason.
