AIBU to feel angry about Notting Hill Carnival behaviour?

Any other London folk mortified by the Notting Hill carnival? Hundreds of arrests, lewd behaviour, vulgarity and litter. It does not represent my culture. It’s an embarrassment.

Wow that is a leap. It is clear my comment was about the underlying principle. Don't move somewhere where something has traditionally happened for decades, and then complain about it. That goes for carnival as well. If you don't like it, don't go or buy a house there.

Yes, apparently a major issue in Soho. I wouldn't want to live next to a nightclub, which is why I don't move next to one. People are ridiculous

If there were 2 million people there then that means 0.03% of people there were arrested. Even if we allow for the fact there were likely "non positive" interactions outside the arrests it's still very possible for the event as a whole to have been "overwhelmingly" positive by those numbers.

does murder outrage you? In 2024 a woman was killed in a stabbing at the carnival and seven others were stabbed. At the carnival this year 68 weapons seized, including a hand held gun and two knife attacks happened as well as over 600 arrests, but sure you are confused why the carnival might anger people 🤷🏻‍♀️

This. ^ The downplaying of quite frankly awful, foul, nasty behaviour at the Notting Hill Carnival (from some posters) is dreadful. Normalising anti-social, intimidating, terrifying behaviour is really NOT cool. Glad I don't live near some of the posters on here! 😬

Im 68 and I remember friends avoiding the carnival because of the violence, crime, and overcrowding when I was 16 - it’s been going on for years, perpetrated by a relatively small number of people, but I think this year seems to have been a bit better than many previous years

I was simply making the point that London tax dollars pay for policing all kinds of public gatherings.

And for all those talking about how dreadful the carnival is for police and how much they hate working it (I've seen this in person).

The police make themselves look silly when they dance at the NHC. I'm glad their seniors have recognised this. I imagine the attendees who get the police to dance are laughing at them, thinking how daft they look.

The police treat NHC with kid gloves, like a ticking timebomb that might go off through an altercation leading to a crushing event.

Maximo is from Barking, so presumably they were both at NHC.

Because the other 1,999,400 people had a great time dancing (however lewdly ;) ) listening to music, eating jerk chicken , watching the carnival bands etc ?

Because ~2 million people attended across the entire weekend. If 600 people misbehaved and 1,999,400 behaved themselves then “overwhelmingly positive” seems like a very fair assessment.

This happened at Liverpool Street station. That is nowhere near NHC. To link the two because he had been at carnival earlier in the day and was heading home is tenuous in the extreme!

But this perfectly embodies the media’s deliberate narrative. They want to paint the event as problematic so even a link which is simply “victim had been at the carnival earlier in the day and is not on their way home” becomes tied to carnival despite happening nowhere near it.

What’s wrong with them dancing?! Some of the best parts of carnival videos.

I think that was very sad but I also don’t see why I would let on tragic event mar the overall fun had by millions of attendees.

Yeah, whats a death or two and a couple of stabbings as long as it’s fun for everyone else
