AIBU to feel angry about Notting Hill Carnival behaviour?

Any other London folk mortified by the Notting Hill carnival? Hundreds of arrests, lewd behaviour, vulgarity and litter. It does not represent my culture. It’s an embarrassment.

I don’t think crying ‘ racism’ has any impact. It’s just a knee jerk defence that avoids responsibility.

Why dosent the council provide temporary toilets?

I’m white and middle class but am not outraged by all the drug taking and drunken fighting and litter that happens at the very white middle class Glastonbury.
Carnival is a massive event, like Glastonbury. Crime and litter are inevitable at both but for some reason it’s only ever Carnival that seems to anger people.

Not at all tbh. Carnival behaviour is much better than it was 10 years ago- the policing is outstanding. Litter is just part of any big event, it is picked up!

Yes, the claim that carnival gets special treatment is either ignorant or a deliberate lie. It simply isn't possible to believe that if you know anything at all about crime rates and ASB at other large events held in the UK.

If anyone actually wants sensible and constructive discussions about how best to manage these big events and the impact on local residents, obvious nonsense makes that less likely.

carnival isn’t a festival. It’s to celebrate local culture. It’s stuck to its roots.

Who is entitled enough to think they can move into an area with an established carnival and get it stopped just because they live their now?!

Before Carnival policing costs are brought up, it costs 70 million to police football matches EVERY year. I don’t see all the Daily mail readers moaning about that though.

And guns. Don’t forget the guy that was arrested and found to be carrying a gun.

I told my DC this weekend not to even bother asking if they can go to the Stabbing Hill Carnival, not a chance. The answer will always be no. Up to them when they are adults of course but I’d hope by then they are able to make sensible choices.

Glastonbury is held on farmland, it’s not really comparable in set up or disruption to local residents with the Notting Hill carnival.

Manchester/Newcastle city centre on a Friday night:
30 to 60+ arrests per 100,000 people

Notting Hill Carnival:
25 to 50 arrests per 100,000 people

Reading Festival:
25 to 50 arrests per 100,000 people

Creamfields Festival:
150 to 200+ arrests per 100,000 people

I think a street festival with millions of attendees will always have some arrests. But as a percentage of the whole it’s negligible.

What I do focus on is seeing over a million people, of all differing backgrounds coming together to enjoy Caribbean culture and celebrate 60 years of NHC - the second largest street festival in the world!

100 arrests out of 138,000 at Glastonbury = a much higher proportion of troublemakers.

I went yesterday and had an amazing time! Nothing Hill carnival is here to stay so stop moaning. The council do a fantastic job cleaning up afterwards.
Nothing hill was a predominantly black area until it was gentrified and so now you have the middle class people complaining

In previous years I believe the amount of crimes and arrests has been lower than in the area in previous years (it used to be a much more mixed area so don’t know if that’s still the case and I have zero sympathy for people moving to the area and then complaining about Carnival).

So it isn’t the stabbings and litter that are the concern then, it’s the location? Going by that logic all the sexual assaults at Glastonbury are acceptable because they occur on a farm?

Creates a mess to the farmland though.
That's why they have to have a year off every few years.

My own DC went to Reading (one went to Leeds) and it was without any significant issues. NH is on another level entirely.

I’ve had a few stories from Reading, all females. Disgusting behaviour there too.
