AIBU to think that this level of executive disfunction is human and normal?

Last Wednesday I took the upstairs bathroom bin bag out. There were no replacement bags in the drawer and I made a mental note to bring a bag up.

Every time since then I walk into the bathroom and think, oh yeah!! Bin bag!! And I mean to bring one up.

Every time I leave the bathroom, poof, clean out of my mind. Totally oblivious until the next time I walk into the bathroom.

The little pile of floss and loo roll tubes is neatly stacked and waiting for the bin bag. (this is not bothering anyone but me).

AIBU to think that while plenty of people would have remembered by now, there are also a great many people for whom this is entirely normal and typical?

Someone close to me is suggesting I have ADHD. I don't think I do. Or, I don't think my way of being is a problem for me or anyone around me.

I just don't think that forgetting a bin bag for a week is a big deal!!

(and yes, I could have replaced it 5 times in the time it took to write this post.)

Yeah normal- I would walk out and get distracted by some other job immediately

Dearg · 31/08/2026 20:34

Seems normal to me. It’s a small housekeeping detail. I dare say there are more important things that you need to focus on.

But why are you bothered? 🤔

Catza · 31/08/2026 20:35

Yep. Totally normal. I don't have ADHD but routinely find things I was meant to fix days ago. It took me three goes today to bring fresh towels up to the bathroom.

NotSmallButFunSize · 31/08/2026 20:35

Agree - tbh sick to bloody death of all the "do you do this? Guess what, you have adhd!" type stuff 🙄

I do the vast majority of these apparent "signs" and would consider myself NT - not everything is a sign of being ND, as much as people want it to be! A lot of it is just being a human being!

My memory has failed me so I've just started doing jobs as soon as I think of them or see them to be done. More is getting done and I'm less stressed.

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/08/2026 20:37

This is me but I finally learned, at the great age of probably 50+, to keep the bin bags for the bathroom bin on the bottom shelf of the bathroom cupboard along with the bathroom cleaning stuff.

TheHawk · 31/08/2026 20:38

Normal. There's a thing I keep forgetting to do but I'm blowed if I can remember what it is until I'm confronted with it again.

Octavia64 · 31/08/2026 20:39

Not normal for me but I am told by other people I have a good memory.

mathanxiety · 31/08/2026 20:40

Have you done it now?

Are there any other examples besides the bathroom bin - is your life full of chores you knew you should do but forgot immediately?

Well yes but unless the bags are in the bottom of the bin, then by the time you've gone down, put the rubbish in the bin.... Yeah I'm not remembering that until next time I pee.

Yes totally normal op.

Nellodee · 31/08/2026 20:43

I’ve spent entire winters with a button missing on my coat that I only remember as I am leaving the house. Multiple winters.

SerendipityCat · 31/08/2026 20:58

It sounds perfectly normal. A friend of mine borrowed a small cabin bag for her holiday back at the end of June. She gave it back in mid-July, and it's been in a corner of the bedroom ever since. At least twice a week I've thought about putting it back in the loft where it normally lives, and it's forgotten the moment I walk out of the bedroom.
Today I finally got round to it and that corner now looks oddly empty...

I do this also, otherwise the bin would never have a bag! And spray with a cloth and in each bathroom to encourage a quick wipe around.

Significant executive functioning is being completely oblivious to the used toilet rolls
whilst having no idea what the day is and what you are doing.

Its a matter of degree.

TheSoapyFrog · 31/08/2026 21:07

I do have ADHD and this is one of the things I experience, albeit on a more ridiculous level. I would never suggest to anyone that they might have ADHD based on them demonstrating just one common characteristic a couple of times though.

likelysuspect · 31/08/2026 21:09

Completely normal

MaryBeardsShoes · 31/08/2026 21:11

It’s totally normal. I’m so sick of adhd bores. ADHD is a serious condition.

Ap42 · 31/08/2026 21:14

I do have adhd and I think this is completely normal. My level of executive disfunction runs deeper, and the more tired/overwhelmed I get the worse it becomes. I regularly get lost whilst driving on routes I know well, I cannot explain directions, I mix my words up, I can't remember names of things. The list is endless.

DontMowMyMeadow · 31/08/2026 21:14

Portals.
Door portals.
Every time you pass through one, the intent for passing through is erased from your memory.

Partial memory of task may be restored by passing back through the portal to your starting point. But success rate is generally considered to be <40%

True.

BeRoseSloth · 31/08/2026 21:15

Quite normal. Put a few liners in the bottom of the stairs and take them up next time you go up.

Yewlez · 31/08/2026 21:17

Interesting answers. I'm autistic and don't think it's normal to forget it so frequently.

Mydahliasareshit · 31/08/2026 21:18

Help future you by putting several layers of bin bags in the container so the job is already done for a while.
Future you will applaud you for that 😘

WonderingWanda · 31/08/2026 21:20

How mamy other people in your house are using the bathroom and have also failed to get a bin bag.

NameChangeScot · 31/08/2026 21:22

If I don't do it there and then or write it down it'll go completely out of mind.

Someone else will come along and tell you it's perimenopause.

I see it like I have too many tabs open in my brain, I can't possibly keep track of them all.

Ps, having repeatedly gone a few days without a bathroom bin bag, now I keep a roll bin liners in the bathroom cabinet.
