AIBU to think that this level of executive disfunction is human and normal?

Last Wednesday I took the upstairs bathroom bin bag out. There were no replacement bags in the drawer and I made a mental note to bring a bag up.

Every time since then I walk into the bathroom and think, oh yeah!! Bin bag!! And I mean to bring one up.

Every time I leave the bathroom, poof, clean out of my mind. Totally oblivious until the next time I walk into the bathroom.

The little pile of floss and loo roll tubes is neatly stacked and waiting for the bin bag. (this is not bothering anyone but me).

AIBU to think that while plenty of people would have remembered by now, there are also a great many people for whom this is entirely normal and typical?

Someone close to me is suggesting I have ADHD. I don't think I do. Or, I don't think my way of being is a problem for me or anyone around me.

I just don't think that forgetting a bin bag for a week is a big deal!!

(and yes, I could have replaced it 5 times in the time it took to write this post.)

My memory has failed me so I've just started doing jobs as soon as I think of them or see them to be done. More is getting done and I'm less stressed.

I've started doing this too, after a lifetime of horrendous procrastination.
My mind now says "do it now", if I try to walk away, and I'm really feeling the benefits.
I'm great guns once I start something - the problem has always been starting.

Cobrakainerd · 31/08/2026 22:25

I saw this thread earlier, went to do something, forgot about it, now have seen it again. 😳 🙈😂

Minasama · 31/08/2026 22:30

Yes I would do that. If the pile was dirty (had soiled sanitary towels etc) I would deal with it immediately though.

Am I the only person who doesn't have a bathroom bin? I'm incapable of remembering to buy bin bags though. Or coffee. No idea why but it's always those two things I forget. I do the main food shop but my husband is now responsible for coffee and bin bags.

Where do you put your used sanitary pads?
Walk it downstairs and put it into the kitchen bin?

Isn’t that a pain when you are going to bed?
And what about guests?

Soooooooverthisnow · 31/08/2026 22:39

The washer bottle on my car is the equivalent of your bathroom bin. It tells me it needs filling up and that information falls out of my head before my key is in the front door.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 31/08/2026 22:40

Well it's either adhd or perimenopause. 🤣

Seriously though adhd leap is quite a big one. Stress can do the same thing.

Mind you I've got a spiky profile consistent with adhd and it took me 10 attempts to get batteries for my remote.

BlackeyedSusan · 31/08/2026 22:40

Middle age.

BibbityBoppityTwo · 31/08/2026 22:40

I did exactly this lately. I do have ADHD, but I wouldn’t classify this alone as an indication of it. Many people would do this.

I don't use disposable sanitary products so that's not an issue. Toilet roll tubes get recycled so they wouldn't go in a bathroom bin. Our kitchen and bathroom are on the same floor. I usually go to the bathroom then pop to the kitchen for a glass of water before heading up to bed so it's no hassle to take any rubbish to the kitchen bin. We just don't generate enough bathroom rubbish to need a bin in there.

It's called the doorway effect - it's to do with the intention being held in working memory which is easily disrupted.

Yes!! That thing can be empty for weeks before I manage to top it up. 😂

on its own, yes, normal. As part of a wider issue, no.

NelferchyLlyn · 31/08/2026 22:50

Im so excited to share by bathroom bin hack....

Pop a roll of binliners in the bottom of the bin and pull up the first bag to go over the edges as you would normally.

When that bag is full, tie up and tear from the roll, then pull up the nextone to go over the bin edges

MiceSpiders · 31/08/2026 22:51

I might forget the bag but I wouldn't just keep piling rubbish up for a week, especially floss. I'd take it down to the bin.
FWIW I keep the bathroom bin bags in the bathroom cabinet to avoid this.

Any1ForTennis · 31/08/2026 22:51

I'm only in my 40's and walked into kitchen the other day, couldn't remember why. Walked backed to the living room, then remembered, walked back into the kitchen and had forgotten again 🙈. Did get there in the end on my third attempt.

Only if there's no chance of leakage or condensation building up in the bin. Bathroom bin juice is the absolute worst.

WhisperingHi · 31/08/2026 22:55

This is why it’s hard finding anyone not self diagnosing with a neurodivergence. She’s really suggesting you have ASHD because you consistently forget the bin bag? Ridiculous of her.

Interesting answers. I'm autistic and don't think it's normal to forget it so frequently.

Is that because it's something you wouldn't forget? A lot of autistic people, my DS included, wouldn't forget something like this. It's just ingrained in him that when you do x you follow it with y.

Threekandles · 01/09/2026 06:25

Big news: I've replaced the bin bag!!

Disappointing caveat: I did not think of putting another roll of bags in the drawer. I used to do this and I mean to do it again. See you all here same time next week? I'll be the one by the pile of floss...

I set reminders on my phone as i.think of what I need to do otherwise I forget instantly.
I live.my life by reminders!.

OrdinaryGirl · 01/09/2026 06:40

@YvieYfronts so sorry for the loss of your mum 💐 Must be a really tough time.

OP, seconding the folk who have said keep a couple of replacement bags inside the bin… and also - if you live with anyone else who uses the bin, get them to take responsibility too! Mental load innit

PeloMom · 01/09/2026 06:45

I’d expect the first 2-3 times to say, sure next time I’m up I’ll bring one but on the 4th at the most will go down right away to get a bag ( and a bunch others to put underneath so it’s easier to change). It’d annoy me if it goes on for few days.

raisemyheartrate · 01/09/2026 06:46

YABU. It takes two seconds to run and get one. Go and Do it now.

Dogstar78 · 01/09/2026 07:00

Off point, but I kept bathroom bin liners in the bin. When I take the liner out, the next bag is right there.
*sorry just seen this elsewhere in the thread"

I heard an explanation for this on the radio. Apparently, when we leave a room, our brain takes that as a cue to re-set itself to prepare a clean slate for the next room and whatever we plan to do there. That’s why it’s so common to leave a room to fetch something, forget what it was but to remember what we wanted when we return to the previous room - the brain retrieves the relevant memory.
