AIBU to be angry about comments on my granddaughters' names?

So, I have 5 grandchildren, this weekend I’m looking after all of them, my daughter and her husband are away to a wedding in France and my son and his wife have booked a little spa weekend.

I popped in to see some of my friends with them as I don’t often have the children and my friends like seeing them.

One of my friends had some other friends I’ve not met before over but we joined them. After introducing the children and then being sent to the kitchen to get a lollipop, one of these friends said oh don’t all the girls have little showgirl names, I must have looked a bit shocked as someone else then jumped in and said oh she doesn’t mean p*rnstar just very moulin rouge.

I just said I thought their names were lovely and moved on but now I’m back home I’m furious, I’m furious I didn’t give her a piece of my mind.

AIBU to think this is an absurd thing to say about children’s names?!

Well honestly, that would depend on the names.

nomorekitchenislandsplease · Today 18:02

The names just reminded her of something. Not particularly rude especially as tge children didn't hear the comment.

Rizzz · Today 18:03

I think it's an absurd thing to get annoyed about.

Why would you 'look shocked' because someone thought they were showgirl names (whatever they are)?

ExtraOnions · Today 18:03

What are they called ? Star? Dita? Fifi ? Roxy? Kitty?

Are they theatrical names ?

Don’t understand why you are furious ? I’m sure they weren’t intimating they were named after porn actors.

Coinkidinki · Today 18:04

I'm not sure your friend meant that to be offensive.

My god! What is wrong with you or are you in agreement that names make the children.

Wingedharpy · Today 18:04

What are "showgirl names"?

One of these names is correct.
Im not sure it really matters what they are called though?

I don’t think it’s a nice comment to make about little girls.

I’m betting on Lola!

canklesmctacotits · Today 18:06

It’ll be Roxy probably, which tbf is a bit of a showgirl name 😳. I do agree with not saying it out loud though. No good could come of doing so!

Lomonald · Today 18:07

Op your friends friend meant what she said ! Sneery nonsense.

Thundertoast · Today 18:07

I would only be insulted if I personally for some reason had a negative view of showgirls... but then this isnt the 1900s and im not a wealthy landowner hoping my eldest grandson will marry a girl of good breeding and stop chasing moral-less, common dancers who will bring shame to our entire family meaning we'll be cast from society....

What, that they have showgirl names?

Why were you 'shocked'?

Dankanddrear · Today 18:07

It was a crass and rude comment to make to the children's grandmother.

I'm sure your mutual friend was cross too.

Really, why not? What's wrong with being a show girl?

If they dont have show girl names its just a silly remark, if they do well presumably their parents like them so what's the problem?

takealettermsjones · Today 18:08

Is it possible that she meant it as a compliment - as in very glamorous, film star sort of names?

Raptors · Today 18:08

I genuinely don't understand why you'd get annoyed over this comment let alone furious and why you'd want to give her a piece of your mind which honestly sounds pretty irrational over a throw away comment.

Irrespective of whether they are or aren’t showgirl names, I just don’t think it something you say out loud. I wouldn’t say out loud if I thought a name was pretentious or tacky or whatever as it’s just not a helpful or needed comment.

nrp2 · Today 18:09

Your way overreacting.... It's not really something to get so worked up about

Pedant61 · Today 18:10

I think you nsed to find a sense of humour, OP. It's just a throwaway remark, it's not about your grandchildren as people. Just laugh it off and say "yeah, you should have heard the God-awful names that were rejected!".

Screamingabdabz · Today 18:11

Yes she was being slightly bitchy. Maybe they didn’t want to be around 5 children on their get together?

I think you are overreacting though - I would’ve just ignored the comment. You don’t need to take it so personally.

OvernightBloats · Today 18:12

I don't think calling a name 'a showgirl name' is an insult. You shouldn't be so upset by the comment. The name must be well known from a play or something.

Upyermonkey · Today 18:12

It was a bitchy comment IMO

Nofeckingway · Today 18:12

It is very unkind to make a negative comment about a little girl's name . Especially to the grandmother . How ignorant of her . I would be annoyed too.
