AIBU to be angry about comments on my granddaughters' names?

So, I have 5 grandchildren, this weekend I’m looking after all of them, my daughter and her husband are away to a wedding in France and my son and his wife have booked a little spa weekend.

I popped in to see some of my friends with them as I don’t often have the children and my friends like seeing them.

One of my friends had some other friends I’ve not met before over but we joined them. After introducing the children and then being sent to the kitchen to get a lollipop, one of these friends said oh don’t all the girls have little showgirl names, I must have looked a bit shocked as someone else then jumped in and said oh she doesn’t mean p*rnstar just very moulin rouge.

I just said I thought their names were lovely and moved on but now I’m back home I’m furious, I’m furious I didn’t give her a piece of my mind.

AIBU to think this is an absurd thing to say about children’s names?!

What are they called ? Star? Dita? Fifi ? Roxy? Kitty?

Are they theatrical names ?

Don’t understand why you are furious ? I’m sure they weren’t intimating they were named after porn actors.

They sound like cat or guinepig names!

No, not Kitty. I fear this thread is just going to turn into a guessing game of their names instead of actually discussing the woman’s manners so I will share their names.
Lola, Roxy and Ruby.

Roxy is naff but not showgirl. I cant imagine a grown adult woman, having to tell people her name is Roxy. This seems quite ridiculous. Unless short for Roxanne.

The other two are fine, though, totally normal names. Calm down if you like the names why do you care.

They are absolutely showgirl names-from musicals and songs. That’s absolutely fine and really not offensive to mention.

As an aside, I can’t imagine pitching up at a friend’s house with 5 children when they already had friends over.

I mean was there any need at all to say it’s naff?

Like really?

I messaged before hand, she told me to pop in while I was out, it wasn’t unannounced!

Mama Rose didn't just march her troupe in there unannounced!

I love the name Roxy! It’s my girl name!

@Fairyliz with yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there....

likeitshard · Yesterday 18:56

It’s rude to comment but they are all showgirl names and Roxy/ Lola are popular stripper names. Likelihood is it slipped out before she could think. I wouldn’t take offence

pinkyredrose · Yesterday 18:56

Upyermonkey · Yesterday 18:12

It was a bitchy comment IMO

How? Showgirls are awesome!

I don't see that's the thing people have different opinions than the offence shouldn't be taken.

I'm glad I don't have that name considering the profession.I've ended up in.It would be a bit ridiculous to introduce myself as Roxy.

Maybe they meant Barry Manilow, Copacabana for one lyrics go Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl.

People aren't necessarily being malicious.

Lightbulbdaze · Yesterday 18:57

It was tactless and pig ignorant for this woman to make negative comments about the little girls names Ellenay.

I can understand why it upset you. I’m glad your granddaughters didn’t hear her hurtful remarks. Enjoy your special time with your grandchildren and try not to let it bother you any further. This ugly natured woman isn’t worth it.

ElsiePiddockSkipsinherSleep · Yesterday 19:00

Lola, Roxy and Ruby are names that could be considered showgirl names. At least she didn’t say hooker 😂

I’d just laugh it off.

Superscientist · Yesterday 19:01

I think your response was fine and you didn't need to say any further. I wouldn't give it too much thought

We ruled out so many names based on lyrics in songs! Lola was a girl option for us as it was my grandmothers name but I couldn't get Kinks Lola song out of my head!

My MIL had a comment about my daughter's name for a friend about it being a bit "ridiculous". I think people think it's a safe to make this comments to grandparents as they didn't choose their names. When her grandchild came along with equally "modern" and less classical names she said to my MIL "don't, I know". My MIL wouldn't have ever mentioned anything but it was a lesson to her friend to keep her mouth shut as you never know when you might find yourself in the same situation.

My daughters name isn't common but it's a fairly normal name, my son's name is a common name but one that has fallen out of favour in the last 30 years. I've had people raise eyebrows at it. It isn't a particularly baby name but children are babies for such a short space of time. Names come in waves, my name was in the top 100 for most of the 1800 and 1900s but now would feel odd if I heard about a baby being called that. You just stay quiet when you hear other people's names!

In all honesty, if you’re going to make a thread about criticism of your GC’s names, then you’re inviting people’s opinions on here really.

Go look on the Baby Names board - there’s such a huge variety of opinions over names. People never agree. Roxy is a less common name that not everyone will love but does it matter? Other people’s opinions are just that - opinions.

And in fairness, if I heard the name Lola, my mind would immediately go to the song and internally sing the next line “…she was a showgirl”…. And for Roxy, I instantly think of Chicago, the musical - the main character Roxie, who was a chorus girl.

So yes, I don’t think the description of “showgirl names” is far off the mark but that’s not a bad thing? Honestly not sure why you’re upset.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · Yesterday 19:05

They are showgirl names imo but I like them all. Why have you taken it as an insult?

AppropriateAdult · Yesterday 19:05

There’s a lot of wilful ignorance on here this evening…

Of course it was a rude comment, OP, and I would have been offended too - there’s no way this woman meant it in a complimentary way, and therefore she should have kept her mouth shut.

Why is it negative ? 🤔

Mothership4two · Yesterday 19:07

I imagine she just meant they were names from shows and Lola being a 'showgirl' put that name for them in her head. I certainly wouldn't have been furious about that comment

Lola, Roxy and Ruby.

Those are beautiful names and I don’t associate them with showgirls, except maybe Roxy. But Roxy is a kick ass name!

Kyttiol · Yesterday 19:07

Coinkidinki · Yesterday 18:13

As one of the names suggested was correct, then at least that one is a showbiz type name.

Obviously you're Gran, you didn't choose the names, but if parents give their children this type of rather exotic, attention-grabbing name, then they shouldn't be surprised with that kind of association.

I think you may be looking for offence where none exists - is there something deeper going on within this group of friends?

I don’t think Roxy is that attention seeky or exotic tbh.

Brits really aren’t ready for American names if they think Roxy is exotic 😂

WonderingWanda · Yesterday 19:08

I think this is not an offensive comment. "They've all got stripper names" yes that would be rude. "Oh what lovely classic film star names" more of a compliment. The comment about showgirl was somewhere in between. I wouldn't take massive offense over it. People say daft things often, this is not a direct insult so don't take it as one.

SnowFrogJelly · Yesterday 19:08

Ellenay · Yesterday 18:04

One of these names is correct.
Im not sure it really matters what they are called though?

I don’t think it’s a nice comment to make about little girls.

Why not share the names
