AIBU to be angry about comments on my granddaughters' names?

So, I have 5 grandchildren, this weekend I’m looking after all of them, my daughter and her husband are away to a wedding in France and my son and his wife have booked a little spa weekend.

I popped in to see some of my friends with them as I don’t often have the children and my friends like seeing them.

One of my friends had some other friends I’ve not met before over but we joined them. After introducing the children and then being sent to the kitchen to get a lollipop, one of these friends said oh don’t all the girls have little showgirl names, I must have looked a bit shocked as someone else then jumped in and said oh she doesn’t mean p*rnstar just very moulin rouge.

I just said I thought their names were lovely and moved on but now I’m back home I’m furious, I’m furious I didn’t give her a piece of my mind.

AIBU to think this is an absurd thing to say about children’s names?!

Life of a showgirl…. Her name was Kitty?

Coinkidinki · Yesterday 18:13

As one of the names suggested was correct, then at least that one is a showbiz type name.

Obviously you're Gran, you didn't choose the names, but if parents give their children this type of rather exotic, attention-grabbing name, then they shouldn't be surprised with that kind of association.

I think you may be looking for offence where none exists - is there something deeper going on within this group of friends?

Irrespective of whether they are or aren’t showgirl names, I just don’t think it something you say out loud. I wouldn’t say out loud if I thought a name was pretentious or tacky or whatever as it’s just not a helpful or needed comment.

But how is 'showgirl' anything like pretentious or tacky?

Why are you taking it as an insult?

And more importantly if you were so 'furious' why didn't you say anything instead of running home to tell Mumsnet?

Mumalala · Yesterday 18:13

Our DDs both have nicknames like these used at home, and out of the house for one of them. A relative once said it sounded like we were starting a French dance troup. It never occurred to me to be offended, it's just true.

Why would a showgirl name be pretentious or tacky? I think you are showing your own prejudice here OP.

I think of performers very positively so names in that field are lovely.

No, not Kitty. I fear this thread is just going to turn into a guessing game of their names instead of actually discussing the woman’s manners so I will share their names.
Lola, Roxy and Ruby.

It is very unkind to make a negative comment about a little girl's name . Especially to the grandmother . How ignorant of her . I would be annoyed too.

Why was it negative?

In my mind they were saying they had glamorous names 🤷‍♂️

Like with anything anybody else says some will people will be offended by it and others won’t.

Personally unless someone is racist etc then I choose not to be offended and assume it’s just a comment that’s offended me but was intentionally meant to do so.

I also assumed Lola and Roxy. I have friends with kids names this.

But put together…op you’ve got to admit that does sound like a troupe of showgirls…😆

Lola, Roxy and Ruby.

It could have been worse. They could have pointed out that they're names from Eastenders.

IglesiasPiggl · Yesterday 18:17

It's the sort of comment that one might think privately that most people wouldn't voice out loud. Does this woman have no social filter? It was a bit crass but there's no point getting angry about the associations people make with names, especially if it's a common association.

Impossiblyme · Yesterday 18:18

Just think - if they ever formed a singing group, they could do a Barry Manilow medley.

Rizzz · Yesterday 18:18

Although now I know the names are Lola, Roxy and Ruby I'd have marked their parents down as Eastenders fans.

All you're missing are Phil and Grant 😁

Coinkidinki · Yesterday 18:18

"Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl" - even Barry Manilow agrees!

They're nice names, pretty but with an exotic touch - like the usual image of a showgirl.

I mean, come on now. There's literally the song 'her name was Lola, she was a showgirl...' I'm sure that just popped into her head. Probably should have stayed in her head but I'm not sure you need to be so angry about it.

What are "showgirl names"?

Strippers/burlesque dancers/ low class a bit common girls& women is what it means.

InterestedDad37 · Yesterday 18:19

Dooferer · Yesterday 18:04

I’m betting on Lola!

I wonder if Tony and Rico feature at all?

Rainbowstarssunlight · Yesterday 18:19

I mean I think it you call your kids Lola, Roxy and Ruby you must assume people are going to think that?

lottiegarbanzo · Yesterday 18:19

Tallulah, Delilah, Savanna, Sienna.
