AIBU to think he should ask before using granddaughter's photo?

My boyfriend is using his gorgeous granddaughter’s picture as his WhatsApp profile picture without her prior consent…when I indicated it might not be appropriate he said he’d change it but wait for her to comment…I said maybe he should have asked her first but I’m not really comfortable with this

It's not ok to use a photo of someone else as your profile pic without asking permission. If she's over 18, he should have asked her. If under, get her parents' consent.

I think it's weird to use a pic of someone else as one's profile picture to begin with.

PurplebudsWhitebuds · 20/08/2026 12:14

Why is he doing this? Is he trying to pass himself off as someone else? Very weird..

PurplebudsWhitebuds · 20/08/2026 12:14

Posted twice for some reason.

WecanbeheroeslikeBowie · 20/08/2026 12:15

Why would he do this? Wouldn't sit right with me anyway, how old is she?
If a child that is concerning, if a teen is he pretending to be a girl to garner responses, or if a woman pretending to be something he isn't?
Is this just on Whatsapp or on other social media?

fruitbrewhaha · 20/08/2026 12:16

Such a strange thing to do. The point of a profile picture is that it’s a photo of the person to help with identifying you’ve got the right account. Why is he using a photo of someone else? Is he trying to show her off?

Mooselander · 20/08/2026 12:17

I think you’re sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong, OP.

Both my parents (divorced) have my children as their profile pics. They didn’t ask. They didn’t need to, it’s their grandchildren!

I think if you’re finding something so innocent “weird” then that’s on you and your strange thoughts Confused

BerylsMum · 20/08/2026 12:18

She’s 35 and stunning and whilst I know him and he only did it because he loves his family so much and not for any wierd reason I just feel it’s not right and he should stick to using his own picture or one of them both although his mates may not realise it’s his granddaughter

Wrong imo.
If she is a child...doubly wrong.

edit...just seen last post, she is not a child, no matter how proud he is of his GD, it's still wrong, if she didn;t give permission.

PinkyFlamingo · 20/08/2026 12:21

But as a profile pic? Your profile is meant to be you.

mondaytosunday · 20/08/2026 12:23

He’s a grandfather to a 35 year old?? How old is he?

WecanbeheroeslikeBowie · 20/08/2026 12:23

If he loves his family so much then he could use a photo of one of his parents or a sibling. Not a 'gorgeous' grandaughter, sounds like he's pretending she's a partner or wife and he's using her photo as bragging.
Still weird which ever way you look at it. But having said that there are a lot of weirdos on MN who think so many things are acceptable so we know they are out there.😆

nomorekitchenislandsplease · 20/08/2026 12:25

He should ask her first, but it's a bizarre thing to do, like putting a photo of a cat as someone's profile picture.

BerylsMum · 20/08/2026 12:27

He’s 75…one of my concerns is what his male mates would think when receiving a message from him using her picture

Thank you for asking that! I was just debating whether to post it myself - the op referring to him as a “boyfriend” made me think he was much younger. Using her photograph is a bit odd in any case. I’d be questioning it, too.

plims · 20/08/2026 12:34

It’s very weird and would make me question his motives.

Mines my cat or my children. Im not a "self-wanker" and hate having my picture taken. MN is very weird.

NovemberMorn · 20/08/2026 12:39

I have used everything from my own pics, cats, sunsets, flowers, photos I have taken of various scenes as avis on various forums.
I have never used any other family members pics, imo it's wrong.

outerspacepotato · 20/08/2026 12:40

How long have you known this guy?

A 75 year old man using a profile pic of a 35 year old woman on his SM comes off shady.

What is a self-wanker?

plims · 20/08/2026 12:40

What is a self-wanker?

Someone who takes alot of selfies

NovemberMorn · 20/08/2026 12:42

Spiffingdarling88 · 20/08/2026 12:41

Someone who takes alot of selfies

Or a crude way of describing self-sexual gratification.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 20/08/2026 12:44

Wow.
That's odd and not very nice.

Morethanadecade · 20/08/2026 12:46

That is odd. You can have your profile pic of anything, but it’s not on to have it of another person altogether.

I can’t believe you are OK with that.

pilates · 20/08/2026 12:48

Yes it’s weird
