To be SOOOO BORED of influencers

Meetmeinlove · 17/08/2026 09:07

I don’t go on social media much anymore for all the reasons I am about to rant about but whenever I do, it’s a constant barrage of people either trying to influence me with clothes or style or holidays or EVERYTHING!

Influencers documenting every part of their lives- holidays, putting up tents, what food they are eating, what they wear, pack - every minutae of everything. What happened to just going on holiday to relax?!

It’s SO FUCKING BORING!! Am utterly
sick of every aspect of life being documented like this to sell shite or a lifestyle or something.

It might just be me as I am 53 and want to go back to the 90’s 😂 but Aibu?!

Your algorithm will show you more of what you are looking at or following.
I rarely get any influencers because I follow art galleries, museums and cats.

StressedOutPeanut · 17/08/2026 09:10

I think influencers are dying out, no where near as popular as they were six/seven years ago thank god.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 17/08/2026 09:10

I think you need to be annoyed at businesses who use these fools to advertise their stuff on the cheap/ in return for freebies/to get round advertising standards. It is irritating but if you don't follow them you won't see them surely?

Am not sure it even is because I get this shite pushed at me on Facebook which I barely go on and only follow friends. It’s just stuff being relentlessly pushed at me!

Maybe it is the whole model of advertising and how it works but it’s still utterly dull. I never see ‘friends’ on Facebook anymore- just nonsense.

I get this but it's not influencers it's businesses selling me handbags/kitchen appliances etc. They have put me off Facebook as it's constant ads now. I hardly use it now because of it.

principalskinna · 17/08/2026 09:15

We'd have to go back to bloody women's magazines though 🤢

parall · 17/08/2026 09:15

You get none of that shite when you binge watch the US cop cams (addictive), and history channels (to prove I can watch something other than drunk Americans caught drink driving 😊).

I do scroll a bit and fast forward the minute someone mentions a product or service. I'm out immediately.

I'm good at this.

It’s also ‘lifestyle’ bloggers that I get loads of too- maybe some are being paid and aren’t transparent about #ads but so much of it! It just depresses me- people blogging about their summer hols with their kids - it can’t be decent holiday time if everything is for content for social media?!

Why? I don't buy magazines and I don't "follow" anyone at all. I manage to live a full and fullfilling life.

MoggetsCollar · 17/08/2026 09:20

I don't get any influencers as I've never watched any influencer content. However, facebook seems totally convinced I want to buy a horse. I literally have no idea why, but every other post is a horse dealer. I haven't ridden since I was 10 and don't want to.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 17/08/2026 09:20

Is there an option to click on not interested? Social media is something that you really need to curate. Who are your friends following? That probably influences your algorithm too.

Facebook is terrible these days the algorithm is ruined on it it's the same for tiktok there are ads every 2-3 tiktoks now. If you want to see your friends you have to search their name and go on their profile or you will barely see them.

Mixymaxymoxy · 17/08/2026 09:23

I don’t think I see any. I tend to follow comedians, home renovations, bee keepers, environmental activists and other random stuff. Maybe try to change the algorithm to select for things you want to see?

Incredulousaboutlife · 17/08/2026 09:23

I don't understand this Influencer thing.

Why are people so lacking in character and their own opinions that they want to be like sheep and behave and act in a way some random on Social Media tells them to?

Total mystery to me but also very disturbing that so many people don't seem to have the capacity to think for themselves and prefer to be told by others how to live their lives.

Walkacrossthesand · 17/08/2026 09:24

I remember surveys back in the 90s where most people claimed they weren’t influenced by advertising. Now ‘influencer’ is a thing. Funny, that.

I miss women’s magazines!

Yes, I feel the same op. My Facebook and Instagram are a constant never ending feed of things to buy. In fact, I’m going to delete both (again!) today. I always feel better when I’m off them but I end up going back on as I miss seeing things my friends post.

BogRollBOGOF · 17/08/2026 09:26

Ultimately it's a personal choice of how much to engage with social media.
If my feeds go awry I tend to do some token searches of stuff I'm more interested in to get the algorithm back on track.

There is a trend of "influencer" style advertising coming through which is a bit irritating, but the adverts are irritating anyway. I'm not sure why I'm supposed to want to go to Boots after seeing someone who looks like they've been attacked by a bunch of 8yos with a beauty box at a sleepover but hey ho. I tend to find that searches for people like Tom Scot keep the actual algorithm influencer resistant Grin

I think because it’s all Meta too, get lots of insta content on Facebook! It all overlaps - relentless reels of stuff I haven’t asked for!

I guess the ultimate solution is to delete it
all but I used Facebook to stay in touch with some people

I follow comedians and funny animal videos and honestly, I sometimes laugh til I’m crying. This is what you need to start watching. Ditch the snake oil sales people.

Morepositivemum · 17/08/2026 09:32

If you search your friends on fb and go into their feeds fb will start showing them to you more. I love all the comedy influencers (are they influencers ?)

MildlyMoist · 17/08/2026 09:34

I don’t use that sort of social media so I never see any! It’s really easy to avoid 😁

I keep in touch with friends via WhatsApp, I have a tiny, very curated anonymous Twitter account - heritage, comedy and wildlife based - and only use my own ‘following’ feed, never ‘for you’.

I engage fully with traditional media so I’m very well informed about current affairs, I don’t need any social media ‘takes’ on those as I can decide what I think for myself.

I couldn’t name a single ‘influencer’ and I am missing out on nothing.
