To be SOOOO BORED of influencers

Meetmeinlove · 17/08/2026 09:07

I don’t go on social media much anymore for all the reasons I am about to rant about but whenever I do, it’s a constant barrage of people either trying to influence me with clothes or style or holidays or EVERYTHING!

Influencers documenting every part of their lives- holidays, putting up tents, what food they are eating, what they wear, pack - every minutae of everything. What happened to just going on holiday to relax?!

It’s SO FUCKING BORING!! Am utterly
sick of every aspect of life being documented like this to sell shite or a lifestyle or something.

It might just be me as I am 53 and want to go back to the 90’s 😂 but Aibu?!

I don’t watch such tripe. The only time they can be useful is if you do get someone who is actually very good at explaining something technical. Eg. Playing a musical instrument or sewing. But such people do not call themselves influencers either.
Anyone calling themselves an influencer has the ego the size of a planet.

CynicalSunni · 17/08/2026 09:36

You don't have to interact much for the algorithm to push them at you. Accidentally hit one or linger too long while scrolling you will be bombarded.

My mistake once was recognising an actor from a tv show. clicked on it to confirm and was inundated with walking dead content. Took an age to block. Same if you read a news article from fb, you then get all the news for the same story over and over

My bug bear is the fake hand over mouth reacting to something. They linger the camera on their face with their hand over their mouth. They look 'shocked' over the most simple things. Everyone seems to do it.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 17/08/2026 09:37

YANBU in the slightest.

I've been having this conversation with more and more of my peer group IRL - we're all in our mid / late 50s.

While some of us value certain aspects of convenience provided by the internet, the intrusion of "influence" is extremely wearing. AI is my absolute nemesis for so many reasons - and the speed at which it has infected everything online is pretty bewildering. A good proportion of influencers aren't even real people and it's getting harder to separate reality from digital fantasy.

I'm down to the basics now. I keep FB but never post, it's a necessary evil for keeping a bit of connection with people. I come on here because it's somewhat anonymous. Other than that, I'd rather chew my own arms off than go on Tik Tok or Instagram.

Part of me would love a targeted EMP to take 90% of it out permanently. And the worst bit is realising there's no going back - as we keep being gleefully told, resistance is futile.

Your algorithm will show you more of what you are looking at or following.
I rarely get any influencers because I follow art galleries, museums and cats.

That’s true on Instagram but not sure on Facebook. I get all kinds of weird things shown at me and selecting “not interested”, or blocking the page seems not to change my algorithm at all.

Instagram though is pretty decent, well over the top decent in that one like on something floods my page with similar posts. So currently my Instagram is London eateries, travel, and the bloke who rides around Edinburgh with his son on his bike.

Gingercatlover · 17/08/2026 09:39

It’s the ones that don’t mark as an AD that annoy me. Every AD should be marked as an AD, it should be the first word.
Not hidden in the text or PR items or gifted or nothing at all. Nobody ever calls them out.

OvernightBloats · 17/08/2026 09:42

It's all fake and money driven. Keep this in mind when you are tempted to look at their mindless drivel. What they are presenting to the world is not real! Don't fall the manipulation.

I think this is it too- I don’t actually ‘follow’ any of these people- I just get it thrown at me anyway. And it’s mostly vacuous nonsense too- but there just SO many people that want to do it for a living too.

Am just bored of all of it- I should probably delete social media entirely and get a brick phone and head back to the 90’s!! I just can’t be arsed.

I think I am over capitalism as a whole 😂

I don’t really see very much of them tbh. You need to train your algorithm. I just get people doing art, crafts, cooking and funny dogs

RanniTheWitch · 17/08/2026 09:46

Lifestyle influencers never come up on my feed, I just see things to do with my hobbies and interests. I find the algorithm pretty good and if it does show you something you’re not interested in just don’t interact with it, and it’ll learn pretty quickly that you’re not interested.

I agree with you that capitalism sucks though, I don’t like adverts in general, but personally I’d rather have the targeted ones that show my things based on my online footprint, than random ones.

Ineedanewsofa · 17/08/2026 09:47

Unless you say no, social media apps will track across platforms, including your internet search history, to target ads onto your feeds. Generally this info is also used to curate explore pages on Insta etc.
If you say no and/or clear your search caches, what you get may well be more random.
Facebook seems to have shifted recently however, now I’m inundated with spammy news page links and the fucking Halara trousers ads! I can only assume it’s had to go back to ‘basics’ and serve ads to me based on my ASL

You get none of that shite when you binge watch the US cop cams (addictive), and history channels (to prove I can watch something other than drunk Americans caught drink driving 😊).

I do scroll a bit and fast forward the minute someone mentions a product or service. I'm out immediately.

I'm good at this.

US cop cams

Sergeant Curtis is brilliant, so addictive. I am not sure what is worse, the way they don't seem to have any respect for the law, or how stupid the Sovereign Citizens are.

@Meetmeinlove I am not sure why 'influencers' exist. Who do they influence? Not me. It is just some random having an opinion on something, and is most often paid to have that opinion these days.

A lot of it seems to be people who want careers in ‘social meeedja’ so start accounts about certain things- fashion ‘unboxing’ big hauls of clothes- that kind of thing! Often linked to over consumption
for content too. It’s so grim!

I think influencers are dying out, no where near as popular as they were six/seven years ago thank god.

Not sure about that!! The BBC has just sacked a load of its radio DJs and employed influencers instead 😁
I'll be honest and confess I dont really know much about these influencers but I heard they get paid to "influence" people?
Seriously, some folk must have more money than sense 🤣

Sensiblesal · 17/08/2026 10:07

The ones on tik tok pushing the chinese tat remind me of the Avon mums back in the day 😂

there are some good creators/influencers but everything is just a repeat & ‘trend’.

all of these people will be replaced with AI esp as its getting harder to tell whats AI & whats not.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/08/2026 10:09

I’ve never watched one, ever. Nor any reality tv. My feeds don’t feed me them.

Catza · 17/08/2026 10:11

Meetmeinlove · 17/08/2026 09:10

Am not sure it even is because I get this shite pushed at me on Facebook which I barely go on and only follow friends. It’s just stuff being relentlessly pushed at me!

I have to agree with previous poster. My FB and IG are showing me a lot of art and a lot of DIY videos (we are renovating) and I never see what you are talking about because I have never shown any interest in these topics. Sometimes FB pushes an odd video or page at me (for example, Tarot readings, Red Pill or Anti-immigration content). I make sure to click "not interested" button so my feed is not taken over by muck.

Those unboxing things are hilarious. My mate told me about them. Who wants to watch someone else open a box??

You see them all over the place. Last time the wife and I went to Portugal we saw a woman all dressed up in evening wear on the beach posing at 9am. Presumably as the beach was quiet or the sun was in the right place, and no doubt to present a representation of their 'best life'which was totally fake. I nearly choked on my pastel de nata laughing.

SunsetDrifter · 17/08/2026 10:46

Does anyone actually buy any shit off the back of what they post? I can't say I have ever been "influenced" to buy anything or go anywhere off the back of seeing a post by someone paid to influence me. Maybe I am just too old to be influenced (early 40s).

I do look up some DIY/decorating ideas, but they are usually videos by people who are trades people rather than an influencer who is clueless and just trying to pedal a product or I've already bought the product and just want to know the best method how to apply it etc.

Any actual evidence to back this up or is it just "my random opinion"?

Because stats suggest the complete opposite. I read that 40% of Americans describe themselves as "content creators" now which is insane. Also makes me wonder who the hell is watching all these people!

This is just patently untrue. UGC (user generated content) creates about 7 times more engagement than content created by brands directly (I work in this space).

BluntAzureDreamer · 17/08/2026 10:54

I just hate advertising full stop. It really irritates the fucking life out of me. Billboards, radio ads, TV ads, and especially ads on social media. It's akin to having a goblin jumping up and down in your face at all times, no matter where you are or what's you're doing, shouting "buy this, spend this, your life is shit you need XXX, you look terrible but XXX can make you look better" blah blah blah. I don't listen to the radio or watch TV because of this but the SM people are sneaky, because it looks like a normal reel then bang - ADVERT! Ugh... Influencers are just glamorised adverts. I'm with you!

LittleMissClutter · 17/08/2026 10:54

The only time I ever see an influencer is on TV and I end up having to Google who they are.

Genuinely, my algorithms just don't show me them.

lovingthebeachlife · 17/08/2026 11:01

This is why I stopped using the likes of instagram years ago. I’m not interested in people selling me shit

lovingthebeachlife · 17/08/2026 11:02

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 17/08/2026 09:10

I think you need to be annoyed at businesses who use these fools to advertise their stuff on the cheap/ in return for freebies/to get round advertising standards. It is irritating but if you don't follow them you won't see them surely?

How do you stop seeing ads though?

They all watch & engage with each other to boost their own profiles
