To be SOOOO BORED of influencers

Meetmeinlove · 17/08/2026 09:07

I don’t go on social media much anymore for all the reasons I am about to rant about but whenever I do, it’s a constant barrage of people either trying to influence me with clothes or style or holidays or EVERYTHING!

Influencers documenting every part of their lives- holidays, putting up tents, what food they are eating, what they wear, pack - every minutae of everything. What happened to just going on holiday to relax?!

It’s SO FUCKING BORING!! Am utterly
sick of every aspect of life being documented like this to sell shite or a lifestyle or something.

It might just be me as I am 53 and want to go back to the 90’s 😂 but Aibu?!

I sort of agree, i didn't purposely start following influencers but some of the accounts I followed because they were interesting/funny have started to try and be influncers and it put me off. One had a well paid "proper job" with a partner with a well paid "proper job" started taking and promoting baby brands after she had her baby, i just thought it was grabby, and unnecessary i doubt these people care if we stop following them though.

ThePeppyOpalScroller · 17/08/2026 11:12

The days of the "infulencer" are over I think. The web is absolutely saturated with wannabe social media "stars". There's a documentary on YouTube about a vlogger studio in Florida, it's eye-opening. A couple run a business renting out props and studios for influencers. Private jet? Sports car? Fancy house? It's all there on site. You can rent by the hour to film. I look at infulencers like I look at singers in music videos. It's all just a fiction. The Internet is predicted to be "dead" by 2030, with most content by then being A.I generated at that stage. Social media will be hit especially hard. You won't know the humans from the A.I.

Poppinpoppinpopcorn · 17/08/2026 11:15

It's the ones who involve their children that bother me the most. These children are famous without concent. Makes me sick

Lilypad34 · 17/08/2026 11:15

I’ve got a whole list of words that are blocked out on my Instagram, should I come across and ‘influencer’ I won’t ever buy from the company that used them so that’s a positive!

I just hate advertising full stop. It really irritates the fucking life out of me. Billboards, radio ads, TV ads, and especially ads on social media. It's akin to having a goblin jumping up and down in your face at all times, no matter where you are or what's you're doing, shouting "buy this, spend this, your life is shit you need XXX, you look terrible but XXX can make you look better" blah blah blah. I don't listen to the radio or watch TV because of this but the SM people are sneaky, because it looks like a normal reel then bang - ADVERT! Ugh... Influencers are just glamorised adverts. I'm with you!

Argh, trying to concentrate on driving and there's a bloody LED billboard flashing around... especially if it changes to something blue so your brain goes into "where's the emergency vehicle coming from" mode.
I'm stunned that so many are allowed due to the risk to road safety. If they're not supposed to attract attention then there's no point in them anyway.

Rondayvu · 17/08/2026 11:19

I have never followed influencers as honestly I am not easily influenced (easily under the influence though ha) but I once watched a man catch and cook a crab by the sea and it's pretty much all that comes up for me now - and seafood boils and things. I have yet to be influenced to go fishing although I could eat a lobster whole at this point and know how to crack open all manner of shellfish.

I love women's mags!

Me too!
Some of my Good Houekeeping editions go back to the early 1990s😁 I can pass several pleasant hours with a couple of my old magazines.
My Ddad used to blame the weight of my “Jackie, Diana, & Pink” teen magazines on the house being slightly wonky!😁

allthingsinmoderation · 17/08/2026 11:27

Somewhat agree. Stop looking at them and they wont pop up for you as frequently, look at things that interest you and youll see more of that.
I think things have changed in the last 5 yrs or so in that "influencers" have gone from relatable people that may be entertaining/of interest into advertisements and they all advertise the same products over and over again it does get boring.

lovingthebeachlife · 17/08/2026 11:30

principalskinna · 17/08/2026 09:15

We'd have to go back to bloody women's magazines though 🤢

I’ve started buying them again!

lovingthebeachlife · 17/08/2026 11:32

There’s a Pantene ad on my Amazon prime subscription & that’s even done in the style of influencers - maybe they are influencers I don’t know.

TheGoldenOwl · 17/08/2026 11:35

Social media is something that you really need to curate."

I really disagree with this. I did not use facebook for the purpose of seeing ads. I used it for seeing friends' content (and accepted that a few ads were fair).

That stopped being possible when meta decided to stop showing me friends content and just push 99.9% ads, most of them irrelevant. It no longer fulfilled its purpose for me and it isnt my job to spend my time teaching THEIR algorithm to make THEM more money.

The "product" is shit, so I stopped using it.
ditched social media three years ago. A lot of people are doing the same.

(MN is an chronologically driven internet chat forum which pre dates algorithmic driven social media before anyone gets sarky)

Lomonald · 17/08/2026 11:37

I am not on tik tok but apparently that is worse.

They do, because the more ' followers' they have, the more stuff they get to flog. It's the entire business model. No followers, no freebies for them!

MoggetsCollar · 17/08/2026 09:20

I don't get any influencers as I've never watched any influencer content. However, facebook seems totally convinced I want to buy a horse. I literally have no idea why, but every other post is a horse dealer. I haven't ridden since I was 10 and don't want to.

For some reason it's convinced I want to be a tradwife with 11 kids to make packed lunch for by making multiple luchboxes in a row every day! I mean maybe I was overthinking packed lunches a bit too much over the years but ' interesting lunches for my 2 children' doesn't translate to ' how do I make bulk lunches for my 15 children' 🙇

Gowlett · 17/08/2026 11:51

Insta is so boring! I’ve never seen Snapchat or TikTok. Facebook, I haven’t looked at in years… I quite enjoy being on MN.

I’d love a good women’s magazine. They’re so expensive now… But I’d be happy to pay for good content, top writers, glossy pages.

Suppose you are right, I understand views are monetised i was quite happy watching some ones posts where they said something entertaining i just get a bit irritated with the #Ads from "non influencers"

Monty36 · 17/08/2026 12:05

These days there is always one on Strictly who nobody really knows. So they have to explain they are an influencer. Along with the Eastenders or former Eastenders person.

nomas · 17/08/2026 12:05

Meetmeinlove · 17/08/2026 09:29

I think because it’s all Meta too, get lots of insta content on Facebook! It all overlaps - relentless reels of stuff I haven’t asked for!

I guess the ultimate solution is to delete it
all but I used Facebook to stay in touch with some people

Facebook is awful, so much racism too.

Youtube Shorts is better, the algorithm is better at spotting what you’re interested in. if you watch one video, it will assume you want to watch more but if you flick past it gets the message quite quickly.

But there is an increasing amount of AI slop.

Walkacrossthesand · 18/08/2026 08:50

At least on MN (which I agree with pp is a chat forum not social media), I’m reading. These endless TikTok/insta/youtube ‘reels’ remove even that brain activity.

ThatWasAFunDay · 18/08/2026 12:31

There is absolutely no reason to be bored of influencers. Dont go on social media and don’t watch the type of crappy tv that involves them. I guess you might end up being subjected to one every now and then but generally they is zero need to see them.
I go on TikTok but my algorithm knows I am not interested in anything that involves typical influencers.
I am interested in diy so occasionally I get one of those ghastly insipid women who want you to come of their journey as custodians (🤮) to renovate their houses.

Backedoffhackedoff · 18/08/2026 12:38

facebook has been shite for over. A decade and it’s just a dying app for the olds. Just come off it?

im surprised you’re seeing influencers on there though, influencers work content on TikTok you tube and instagram, they might shadow post to Facebook but its not really an influencer platform.

Surely anything you see on TikTok is an influencer? Influencer is just the old fashioned word for content creator

RampantIvy · 18/08/2026 12:39

friedaklein · 17/08/2026 09:09

Your algorithm will show you more of what you are looking at or following.
I rarely get any influencers because I follow art galleries, museums and cats.

I rarely get vacuous airheads influencers cropping up on my feeds either.

aliasfrog · 18/08/2026 12:41

They're glorified billboards.
Nothing compares to the peace of having absolutely no social media though. I would recommend it!!

nam3c4ang3 · 18/08/2026 12:43

i mean - its your algos surely. Mine is baking, american cop shows and funny memes about my second child being a bit unhinged but my 1st being an angel - oh and dancing vids (thanks to my eldest)
