To be SOOOO BORED of influencers

I don’t go on social media much anymore for all the reasons I am about to rant about but whenever I do, it’s a constant barrage of people either trying to influence me with clothes or style or holidays or EVERYTHING!

Influencers documenting every part of their lives- holidays, putting up tents, what food they are eating, what they wear, pack - every minutae of everything. What happened to just going on holiday to relax?!

It’s SO FUCKING BORING!! Am utterly
sick of every aspect of life being documented like this to sell shite or a lifestyle or something.

It might just be me as I am 53 and want to go back to the 90’s 😂 but Aibu?!

I watched a video on YouTube Shorts that I found incomprehensible (inoffensive though).

I read through the comments to understand the context and 90% of the thousands of comments are all by bots. It’s the same comment repeated over and over with sometimes a slight variance.

They're glorified billboards.
Nothing compares to the peace of having absolutely no social media though. I would recommend it!!

I tend to use Facebook for the local groups, which contain very useful information about road closures, local events etc.

I live near the Peak District and the updates about the fires from the various fire brigades have been useful and interesting.

I rarely see one. It helps that I don’t use Instagram or TikTok. I only use FB and Mumsnet. I do also use YouTube which I assume qualifies as social media, but I rarely see ‘influencers’ on there.

’Influencers’ just seem like a weird extension of celebrity. ‘Hey everyone, look at this person. They’re better than you, and these are the products they use. You should buy them too and then maybe you won’t be such a sad twat’. Except at least some celebrities have genuine, significant talent to entertain, whereas influencers are mostly just lazy, narcissistic people who can’t/don’t want to get a proper job.

If I was going to be pedantic, I’d point out that MN is social media! True that we don’t have to suffer influencers here, but still plenty of advertising.

Not if you use a browser that blocks them.
I think of mn as an online message board which is different to social media since I have no idea who anyone is!

Fair points @aliasfrog. I don’t really know what anything is in this new world of tech. Beginning to really feel my age 😂

I feel ancient if I happen to come across a youtube video about influencers or social media trends 😅

Unfortunately the past success of influencers has bred a generation of marketing people who regard influencers as their main tool. So the marketing budget still gets spent entirely on giving stuff to influencers or paying them to produce content, even though everyone is now sick to death of influencers. It will be interesting to see what eventually replaces them.
