AIBU to end things over his constant pointless lies?

Been seeing someone for a few months and I’ve now caught him out on at least 3 stupid lies.

  1. he told me he had a dog, a husky called Bear. He would talk about this dog almost daily “I took Bear to the beach today” “just been watching tv with bear” “bear has vets tonight at 4pm” etc. first time I went to his house there were no signs of a dog at all so I said “where is bear?” He looked confused, then panicked and then said “oh he died unfortunately” so I said “when?? Because late last night you said you were walking him early this morning …”. He said he died last night so I said “and you never mentioned it? Come on …” so he admitted he didn’t have a dog but bear did exist, it’s his sisters dog. This also turned out to be a lie.
  2. He told me he had joined the Conservative Party and was considering running as a councillor. This turned out to be a complete lie.
  3. he told me today that he had gone to see the Monet exhibition in the local art gallery. Yet tonight he was on the phone and I heard him confirm with his boss that he had worked a full day today starting at 9am and finishing at 5. Afterwards I said “thought you were at art gallery today?” So he stumbled on his words and said “oh - no - well yes I was but that was yesterday, I got my days mixed up” he literally called me at 2pm saying he had just left the art gallery!! I was meant to be staying at his house tonight but I’ve come home telling him I can’t be doing with the constant stupid lies. AIBU

Run away fast! What a weirdo / fantasist / seriously worrying individual! Make sure you’re safe!

rainydaysaway · 15/08/2026 23:10

YANBU! What a weirdo.LTB.

Tablo · 15/08/2026 23:10

He’s a liar and a bit dense by the sound of it. Run for the hills.

HexInductionHour · 15/08/2026 23:11

oh dear, he has problems. You did the right thing OP.

ItsPickleRick · 15/08/2026 23:12

If he can lie about such stupid things he’ll lie about the big things too.

You can’t trust him, end it.

AmandaEatsLemons · 15/08/2026 23:12

Completely reasonable! He seems like a right weirdo

NormasArse · 15/08/2026 23:12

How very strange!

Midlifecrisis2026 · 15/08/2026 23:13

I went out with someone who told little lies about the most stupid things and it really turned me off.
You have no future with this guy - he sounds weird. How was he ever gonna get away with the lie about the dog for so long?!

NotSorry · 15/08/2026 23:13

I used to work for someone who told stupid pointless lies. She knew that I knew she was lying but she carried on anyway. It won’t get any better OP, best to get rid of him now.

geumsun · 15/08/2026 23:13

I'd love to know the psychology behind compulsive lying like this. Is it insecurity? Trying to sound more interesting than one is?

Regardless, bin him.

Greekgoddess2000 · 15/08/2026 23:15

I met someone like this once, it fuvks your head up - like why??? Totally agree that they will lie about everything! Run as fast as you can

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/08/2026 23:16

You know you can finish with someone for any reason at all.

QueenOfHiraeth · 15/08/2026 23:18

Run
That is all

Onelifeonly · 15/08/2026 23:22

As a child I had two 'friends' who did this and it made me uncomfortable as I knew they were lying but didn't know how to call them out. One of my dds also had a friend like this - her father was also clearly a fantasist too. Is it a maladaptive way of dealing with trauma, maybe?

To be honest I can't imagine why you would even need to ask MN about this guy!

MyDeepAmberDog · 15/08/2026 23:23

You would be mad to stick around.

The sheer lack of intelligence would probably annoy me even more than the lies.

Throw him back.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/08/2026 23:24

Well for me he was dumped at “conservative party” but seriously wow, he sounds quite ill I’d say.

CelestialGazer · 15/08/2026 23:27

Tell him you can’t Bear to be with someone who is at best an eccentric liar and at worst a deluded fantasist, so you are ending it now before you waste any Monet on him.

And then block…

sunnyfeet · 15/08/2026 23:30

He sounds really weird

Temporaryname158 · 15/08/2026 23:30

Run for the hills. I didn’t, his lies were just the start before the anger and violence started. He can’t be trusted

Shaynac · 15/08/2026 23:32

They’re pointless but aren’t small. The dog one is truly bizarre - to make up a large dog, give it a name, make up anecdotes about it, and then claim it’s dead. That’s out and out fantasist.

summitfever · 15/08/2026 23:32

Run. A. Way.

JetFlight · 15/08/2026 23:36

I met someone when I was a teen who did similar. Except in their case, they felt sorry for their neighbour whose dog had died so they let the neighbour borrow theirs. At least this person was a teen trying to make their life seem more interesting. This man? Forget this relationship.

LifesabagofRevels · 15/08/2026 23:46

Run. I had a friend who tuned out to be a compulsive liar. I regret not cutting her off before she did damage to my reputation.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 15/08/2026 23:57

I used to work with someone like this who made up an entire family that had various disasters that meant he often had to leave early and arrive late. Everyone was very understanding until we discovered none of them existed and it was all a complete fantasy! Utter weirdo, and actually got a bit scary when he was found out.

I'd give this one a very wide berth OP, not least because you'll never be able to belive a word he says.

Happyjoe · 15/08/2026 23:58

I'd have dumped him for number 2, even without all the lies!
Nah, life is far far too short to spend with people like this.
